Successful soybean production in a given growing area is greatly affected by variety selection. This publication reports the agronomic performance of entries in the 2003 South Dakota performance trials for conventional (non-Roundup Ready) and Roundup Ready™ soybean varieties. Important factors in variety selection include yield, maturity, plant height, lodging resistance, and Phytophthora root rot resistance. In the case of public varieties, additional information including emergence, shattering, and iron chlorosis scores (Table A) are given.

PREP Reports & Publications

This report describes the development of the project team, mapping criteria, and results of natural resource and co-occurrence mapping of the town of Greenland, New Hampshire. Using Geographic Information Systems mapping and analysis, natural resource characteristics were mapped and land parcels were evaluated to determine conservation priorities within the town. Outreach activities were also carried out and planned to distribute information to town decision makers, landowners and citizens and to share the results of the mapping process.

This paper reports on learning in autonomous Lego robots programmed to play soccer. The specific focus here is upon how different behaviors can be learned by two identical robots, based on the different type of feedback they receive from the environment. After being constructed with the same design and the same software, two Lego robots are able to perform the same basic soccer actions, such as moving to the ball, determining where the goal is. and kicking the ball. A non-deterministic version of the Q-step learning algorithm is then used to allow a robot to learn a correct series of …

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Previous studies in Monteverde, Costa Rica, have shown that numerous bird species are moving upslope in response to climate change. While there are an increasing number of such studies that address climate change, most fail to incorporate seasonal climatic variation. I censused the birds in three elevational zones in the Monteverde area not only to assess these distributional shifts, but also to determine the effects of season on bird communities. Compared to Michael Fogden’s data from 1979-1992, I found a number of species that have moved into higher zones where they were previously less common or absent. However, the results …

This research examines the potential consequences for higher education access if the U.S. Department of Education continues to move forward with its technology plan for financial aid delivery. More specifically, it explores how the transition of Federal Student Aid (formerly Student Financial Assistance) toward a Web-based financial aid application process will affect college applicants'particularly low-income students who often lack access to technology. Using a national data set of financial aid applicants, discriminant analyses (several stepwise) are conducted on selected demographic variables to ascertain the potential impact of this migration.

Eating disorders should be a growing a concern in today's society. This study was designed to examine the occurrence of eating disorders in women living in residence halls compared to women living off-campus. The participants for this study were 200 women (105 on campus and 95 off campus) attending Western Kentucky University. Age of the participants ranged from 18 to 47 years, with a mean of 21.1 years (SD=3.70). The instrument used to determine eating disorder symptoms was the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS; Stice, Rizvi, & Telch, 2000). The EDDS is a selfreport scale consisting of 22 items in …

This descriptive study was designed to determine whether substance abusers could be differentially characterized by past involvement in crimes and, further, whether there is a relationship between the type of substance abused and the degree of violence of the crimes committed. By comparing the socio-demographic characteristics, substance-use, and strain-inducing events reported by 598 residential and outpatient treatment seekers in the Kentucky Treatment Outcome and Performance Pilot Studies Enhancement Project, this study provides further understanding of the crime-substance relationship. The present study was designed to gain a better understanding as to some of the possible contributing factors of muscle dysmorphia. Muscle dysmorphia is an under recognized form of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Individuals who are diagnosed with muscle dysmorphia are in reality very large and muscular, but they have a profound fear and belief that they are small and weak. These individuals go to extreme lengths to increase their amount of lean muscle mass. If two theory formulations are merely different expressions of the same theory, then any problem of choosing between them cannot be due to the underdetermination of theories by data. So one might suspect that we need to be able to tell distinct theories from mere alternate formulations before we can say anything substantive about underdetermination, that we need to solve the problem of identical rivals before addressing the problem of underdetermination. Here I consider two possible solutions: Quine proposes that we call two theories identical if they are equivalent under a reconstrual of predicates, but this would mishandle important cases. …

Bartonellae are bacterial pathogens for a wide variety of mammals. In humans, bartonellosis can result in angioproliferative lesions that are potentially life threatening to the patient, including bacillary angiomatosis, bacillary peliosis, and verruga peruana. The results of this study show that Bartonella bacilliformis, the agent of Oroya fever and verruga peruana, produces a proteinaceous mitogen for human vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs) that acts in a dose-dependent fashion in vitro with maximal activity at >72 h of exposure and results in a 6- to 20-fold increase in cell numbers relative to controls. The mitogen increases bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation into HUVECs …

A Solution To Einstein’S Field Equations For A Tachyonic Gas: Possible Astrophysical Applications, Kris H. Green, W. John Cocke

In this paper we show that a change in the signs of some of the metric components of the solution of the field equations for the classical cosmic string results in a solution which we interpret as a time-dependent wall composed of tachyons. We show that the walls have the property of focusing the paths of particles which pass through them. As an illustration of this focusing, we demonstrate the results of a simple simulation of the interaction between one such tachyon wall and a rotating disk of point masses. This interaction leads to the temporary formation of spiral structures. …
