Concretizing Sustainable Worlds: Environmentalism As A Politics Of Technological Transformation, Tyler Veak

Andrew Feenberg, a philosopher of technology, argues for a democratic rationalization of technology, whereby subjugated actors intervene in the design process to achieve their interests. He claims that environmentalism represents one of the greatest opportunities for this kind of intervention. His suggestion seems viable; most if not all of the current environmental problems stem from maladaptive technologies. Transforming these technologies is therefore imperative if we are to move toward more sustainable societies. Feenberg, however, does not address the details of his proposal or offer more than a few brief examples of what he is advocating. I use Feenberg’s Critical Theory …

Integrating Doctrine And Expository Preaching: A Proposal And An Analysis For The Twenty-First Century, Joel Randall Breidenbaugh

This dissertation proposes and analyzes the integration of doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Chapter 1 traces the recent history of doctrinal preaching and expository preaching. Problems related to postmodernism, the New Homiletic, and the changes within contemporary evangelicalism also receive treatment.

Chapter 2 defines and blends the definitions of expository preaching and doctrinal preaching. These definitions form the basis for defining doctrinal expository preaching. Several doctrinal prerequisites of an expositor conclude this section.

Chapter 3 examines the biblical basis for doctrinal exposition. The semantic domain for preaching and the Bible's practitioners of doctrinal exposition support this basis. …

A History Of The Montgomery County Public Library, Jonathan Jeffrey

A history of library services in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, the county seat of Montgomery County. Articles traces the history of the early library movement in Mt. Sterling and the eventual establishment of a subscription library, the Mt. Sterling Library Association. This organization was eventually managed by the Mt. Sterling Woman’s Club. Mary T. Kennedy donated her home for the library’s use upon her death; it served as the library from 1962 to 1984. A library taxing district was established in 1981 to fund the library, and new library building opened to the public in 1984.

Keeping The Faith: A History Of The Library Services In Versailles, Kentucky, Jonathan Jeffrey

A history of library services in Versailles, Kentucky, the county seat of Woodford County in Kentucky’s famed bluegrass section. Article traces the history of the early library movement in Versailles and the eventual establishment of the Logan Helm Library, a bequest of Margaret C. Logan, of Orlando, Florida in 1903. Because of the donation of a bookmobile to the county in 1954, the community had two library boards. These two entities were merged in 1965, and a library tax district was officially approved in July 1977.

Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center

In March 2001 the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center (RMPJC) of Boulder, Colorado, initiated a project to provide technical information on standards for cleanup of the contaminated site of the former Rocky Flats nuclear bomb factory. The project was supported in part by a technical assistance grant from the Citizens’ Monitoring and Technical Assessment Fund.

The purpose of the project was to review, analyze, and disseminate information on the radionuclide soil action levels or cleanup standards being established for the Rocky Flats facility. The timeline of the project closely paralleled steps to revise the Rocky Flats Cleanup Agreement (RFCA) …

Environmental Enrichment And Prior Experience Of Live Prey Improve Foraging Behaviour In Hatchery-Reared Atlantic Salmon, C. Brown, T. Davidson, K. Laland

Atlantic salmon salmo salar L. parr were reared for 3 months under standard hatchery conditions or in a structurally enriched tank (containing plants, rocks and novel objects). Half of each of these fish had prior exposure to live prey in the form of live bloodworm while the other half were fed hatchery-pellets. After 12 days all fish were tested on a novel live prey item (brine shrimp). A significant interaction between the two factors (prior exposure to live prey and rearing condition) revealed that foraging performance was only enhanced in fish that had been reared in a complex environment and …

Rationale: The ethical debate concerning the use of animals in biomedical and pharmacological research continues to be replete with misunderstandings about whether animals have moral standing. Objectives: This article briefly reviews the central ethical positions and their relationship to the basic parameters of research regulation from an international perspective. The issues associated with the validation of animal models will then be discussed. Finally, suggestions for empirical ethics research will be presented. Methods: Recent literature reviews were accessed and analyzed. Results: This review summarizes the pertinent ethical and research literature. Groundwater Test Pumping In The Tambellup Townsite, Louise Hopgood

Resource management technical reports

Previous studies have concluded that the township of Tambellup is underlain by a perched aquifer. Test pumping and groundwater modelling indicated that groundwater pumping may be an effective way of protecting townsite infrastructure by lowering the water table beneath the town. This report presents results of the test pumping and provides likely bore yields, prediction of pumping influence and likely optimum production bore spacing.

The Irrigation Training and Research Center, working under agreement with the California Energy Commission as part of its Public Interest Energy Research Program, conducted an analysis of the energy used to supply water to California's agriculture and examined potential future trends in the agriculture water community to predict future energy requirements.

The Economic Incidence Of Smoking Laws, John Dunham, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Although laws restricting smoking in restaurants are becoming commonplace, most research has focused on either the health benefits that laws may provide customers and workers or whether laws harm owners. But while smoking laws may directly alter profits, owners may alter prices, output, and other business attributes in ways that affect the welfare of customers and workers. This study examines whether restaurant and bar owners alter prices, entertainment, hours of operation and other business attributes in response to local smoking laws. Substantial support is found for these attribute changes in the Wisconsin hospitality industry. One implication is that an overall …

Further Investigation Of The Factor Structure Of The Five Factor Model Of Personality: A Search For Moderator Variables, Kelly Sheehan

Although somewhat controversial, the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality has remained prominent in normal personality research. Previous studies involving the FFM of personality have failed to examine individual differences that could moderate the number of factors in the FFM. This study investigated two such individual difference variables: need for cognition and working memory. Instruments measuring the FFM, need for cognition and working memory were administered to a sample of undergraduate students. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis indicated the hypothesized model fit equally well across high and low scoring subgroups of both need for cognition and working memory.

The Utah Natural Heritage Program (UNHP) assimilates and synthesizes information concerning rare species for use in land management and species conservation applications. This information is maintained in the UNHP database and includes both species-level information—e.g., assessments of species conservation status from a statewide perspective—and population-level information, which includes GIS coverages for species of high conservational interest. Beginning in 1996 an effort to develop information in the UNHP database for animal species was funded by the Utah Reclamation, Mitigation, and Conservation Commission under authority of the Central Utah Project Completion Act. Initial efforts focused on assigning conservation priority ranks. Several factors—comprising …
