Heat-Shock Protein 70 (Hsp70) As A Biochemical Stress Indicator: An Experimental Field Test In Two Congeneric Intertidal Gastropods (Genus: Tegula), Lars Tomanek, Eric Sanford

Although previous studies have demonstrated that heat-shock protein 70 (Hsp70) can be induced by environmental stress, little is known about natural variation in this response over short time scales. We examined how Hsp70 levels varied over days to weeks in two intertidal snail species of the genus Tegula. Sampling was conducted both under naturally changing environmental conditions and in different vertical zones on a rocky shore. The subtidal to low-intertidal T. brunnea was transplanted into shaded and unshaded mid-intertidal cages to assess temporal variation in Hsps under conditions of increased stress. Primary data sources for this study are the South Dakota Department of Revenue and USDA’s South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service. Other sources include the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, South Dakota Office of School and Public Lands, and the Western Wood Products Association.
These data are combined to capture in a single group the impacts of industries that produce or utilize agricultural commodities in South Dakota. Similar aggregations of data are made for other industries in the state. Thus, Standard Industry Code groupings have been modified for this study. Beam headers are commonly used in walls framed with cold-formed steel studs to span openings in bearing walls. This paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted at the University of Missouri-Rolla to establish the web crippling strength of both box- and I-beam headers for an interior-one-flange (IOF) loading condition. the beam header specimens were tested as a system consisting of two C-sections together with top and bottom track sections. the header configuration used in this study are defined in the Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing, Header Design (2000). This paper describes the design, synthesis, and successful employment of inhibitors of 4-( β -D-ribofuranosyl) aminobenzene-5’-phosphate (RFA-P) synthase, which catalyzes the first committed step in the biosynthesis of methanopterin, to specifically halt the growth of methane-producing microbes. RFA-P synthase catalyzes the first step in the synthesis of tetrahydromethanopterin, a key cofactor required for methane formation and for one-carbon transformations in methanogens. A number of inhibitors, which are N-substituted derivatives of p-aminobenzoic acid (pABA), have been synthesized and their inhibition constants with RFA-P synthase have been determined. Many churches in Africa lack recorded history for various reasons, such as scarcity of funds and/or scholars in the field of church history (cf. Kalu, 1993:166ff). This situation is more prevalent among the Pentecostal movements which, initially and for genuine reasons, were anti-intellectualist and emphasized ministry alone (Clark & Lederle et al, 1983:41; McNamee, 1974:27; and Hollenweger). Another possible explanation results from the fact that these churches are relatively young compared to their counterpart mainline churches. This lack of recorded history poses a hindrance to any efforts in evaluating the growth of such churches.

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The result of this project is a mini-course lesson plan which can be used at the Cloud Forest School-Centro de Educación Creativa (C.E.C,). The mini course lesson plan will be used in seventh and eighth grade classes to teach the local taxa of Monteverde. Enclosed are six Power Point presentations, six interactive activity plans, six field guides, and a list of teacher resources. I expect this mini course to reinforce the C.E.C.'s environmental education curriculum while also taking into account teacher turnover and lack of resources.

The doctrine of judicial estoppel is not on some lawyers’ radar screens. That’s regrettable. Not anticipating application of the rule, a person may make a claim that can hurt him or her in the long run. Or, unaware of the rule, a party may fail to assert a potentially successful defense. Or, having only a very general awareness of the rule, an attorney may miss subtleties or forum variations that are the difference between winning and losing.

The treatment of violence in Francophone Literatures is not only a thematic issue but becomes a writing project that reveals different textual forms as well. Those texts in which violence appears in both aspects – themes and forms – require a particular kind of reception. This article deals with the newspaper’s reception of "Allah n’est pas obligé". The comparison between Quebec’s and France’s journalistic criticism points out that the complexity of Kourouma’s text allows readers to activate several levels of reception: a very contextualized historical one and an aesthetic one. Critics do not agree on what constitutes the interest of the works of Schwarz- Bart. However, four major tendencies are apparent in the many critical studies of her works: some are interested in the "creole experience" her novels are said to portray, others in the "feminine experience", while others again in the "mythological" dimension and the question of what is borrowed from oral literature. The study was conducted in order to determine the effects of the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) program on community and officer attitudes. The two main goals of this program are to increase officer awareness of community concerns and to raise community awareness about the police department. Surveys were distributed to three groups: employees of the Bowling Green Police Department, all alumni of the CPA, and a random sample of the local community. Participants were asked their attitudes regarding crime prevention, awareness of police officers' activities, and the effectiveness of the CPA program. T-tests and ANOVAs determined that police officers who …

Adult peer groups have become more and more a topic for sociological study. It is a phenomenon that is starting to gain interest. This research focuses on one sorority on the campus of a Midwestern university and how this sorority manages to incorporate the women that they pledge through formal recruitment into the sorority and how these women fully socialize themselves into this group of women who already have bonded with each other.
