Providing microfinance to the poorest of the poor in rural areas remains a challenge. Grameen demonstrated that the poor are viable clients for loans and reached them on a massive scale. However, they reach only the upper level of the poor and provide narrow and limited financial services with rigid systems and procedures, which in many ways do not address the needs of the poorest. As a response to many partial and simplistic theoretical and empirical studies, this paper presents a more comprehensive analytical framework to assess the success of microfinance in achieving its dual objectives of financial sustainability and poverty reduction. By giving center stage to the study of group dynamics and using principles of imperfect information and social psychology, the paper argues that microfinance not only has failed to solve the original problems of information asymmetries between borrowers and lenders but also, in its pursuit of financial sustainability, is destroying the very foundations of these schemes by disrupting the social fabric of communities, …

This infrastructure not only incorporates principles, history of ideas, and applicable theories but also includes an entourage of scholars who have been associated with Trebing in research and policy endeavors. In addition to providing scholarly work and policy involvement, Trebing, in partnership with his wife, Joyce, has provided organizational leadership. Discussions on banking reforms to reduce financial exclusion have referred little to possible attitudinal constraints, on the part of staff at both branch and institutional levels, inhibiting the provision of financial services to the poor. The research project, funded by the ESCOR (now Social Science Research) Small Grants Committee, has focused on this aspect of financial exclusion. The research commenced in May 2001 and was completed in April 2002. Profiles of the rural bank branch managers, including personal background, professional background and workplace, are presented. Analysis Of Beef Producers’ Risk Management Perceptions And Desire For Further Risk Management Education, David C. Hall, Thomas O. Knight, Keith H. Coble, Alan E. Baquet, George F. Patrick

Beef cattle producers were surveyed in Texas and Nebraska to investigate perceptions of sources of risk, the effectiveness of risk management strategies, and interest in further risk management education, particularly production risk, using probit analysis. Important decision variables identified are age, prior use of risk management tools, previous attendances of risk management education, and risk aversion. Severe drought and cattle price variability are identified as primary risk factors with potential to affect farm income. Extremely cold weather and disease are of less importance. Understocking pasture and storing hay are perceived most effective as risk management options.

Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Their Summer Clinical Practicum, Elizabeth Scott

The purpose of this study was to discover associate degree nursing students' perception of their summer clinical practicum. The university was located in rural southeast Tennessee. A qualitative method of phenomenological design was used with an unstructured interview to ask the question: "please tell me about your summer clinical practicum and how it affected you?" The framework was Imogene King's Systems of Transaction in Gqal Attainment. Themes identified were communication, mentoring, interpersonal relationships, prior learning, and growth and development. The study findings supported the use of a summer clinical practicum, revealed that nursing students' perceived an increased self confidence and …

Every rare once in a while, I find myself caught in a conversation where the person I'm talking to goes off on a tangent. And I don't mean a little aside. I mean a "What the hell are you talking about!?" tangent.

Luckily, for the other 99% of conversations, there are some general guidelines for engagement that help us avoid making mistakes like this one. H. Paul Grice, a language philosopher, is the scholar credited with first writing about these rules in a widespread way. Grice theorized that participants in conversation operate by an overarching approach that we now call …

The purpose of this application, under Articles 55 and 29 of the Code, is to remove the homonymy between the crinoid subfamily name ISOMETRINAE Clark, 1917 (type genus Isometra Clark, 1908; family ANTEDONIDAE) and the scorpion subfamily name ISOMETRINAE Kraepelin, 1891 (type genus Isometrus Ehrenberg in Hemprich & Ehrenberg, 1828; family BUTHIDAE). It is proposed that the entire generic name of Isometra should be adopted as the stem, so that the correct spelling of the crinoid subfamily will become ISOMETRAINAE Clark, 1917.

Distance learning can offer a solution to a long-standing challenge of undergraduate education: how to assign an appropriate amount of work to each student, and how to assess this work efficiently. In this paper I describe the Depository of Repetitive Internet-based probLems and Lessons (DRILL), an online system for providing education and assessment for precalculus, which can substitute for routine problems given in homework and as exam questions. Its special features include:

• adaptive testing,
• on-the-fly question generation,
• instant assessment,
• context-sensitive help,
• question balancing, and
• two-dimensional test design.

Money Talks: Conversations With Poor Households In Bangladesh About Managing Money, Stuart Rutherford

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This paper describes the money management behavior of 42 low-income Bangladeshi households, half of them rural and half living in urban slums. They were found to be active managers of their financial resources. Thirty-three varieties of financial instrument were found to be in use by the sample households during the research year. As well as using a wide variety of instruments, most households engaged in multiple uses of the instruments: on average each household initiated a new money management arrangement every two weeks. The sums of money involved are large, both absolutely and relative to incomes. The average “turnover” (the …
