Assessment Of Open-Source Software For High-Performance Computing, Gayatri Rapur Dec 2003

Assessment Of Open-Source Software For High-Performance Computing, Gayatri Rapur

Theses and Dissertations

High quality software is a key component of various technology systems that are crucial to software producers, users, and society in general. Software application development today uses software from external sources, to achieve software implementation goals. Numerous methods, activities, and standards have been developed in order to realize quality software. Nevertheless, the pursuit for new methods of realizing and assuring quality in software is incessant. Researchers in the software engineering field are in pursuit of methods that can be on par with changing technology. Assessment of open-source software can be supported by a methodology that uses data from prior releases …

Coupling Heat Transfer And Fluid Flow Solvers For Multi-Disciplinary Simulations, Qingyun Liu Dec 2003

Coupling Heat Transfer And Fluid Flow Solvers For Multi-Disciplinary Simulations, Qingyun Liu

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to build, test, validate, and implement two heat transfer models, and couple them to an existing fluid flow solver, which can then be used for simulating multi-disciplinary problems. The first model is for heat conduction computations, the other one is a quasi-one-dimensional cooling channel model for water-cooled jacket structural analysis. The first model employs the integral, conservative form of the thermal energy equation, which is discretized by means of a finite-volume numerical scheme. A special algorithm is developed at the interface between the solid and fluid regions, in order to keep the heat flux …

Dehydration Of An Ethanol/Water Mixture Using Lignocellulosic Based Adsorbents, Tracy John Benson Dec 2003

Dehydration Of An Ethanol/Water Mixture Using Lignocellulosic Based Adsorbents, Tracy John Benson

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the effectiveness of using cellulosic adsorbents to dehydrate 95 wt% ethanol/5 wt% water mixture. Hardwood sawdust, kenaf core, and bleached wood pulp were used as adsorbents in both liquid phase and gas phase experiments. All three adsorbents preferentially adsorbed water compared to ethanol. Bleached wood pulp exhibited the best performance of adsorbents examined. Data from the liquid ? phase experiments were fitted to the Chakravarti ? Dhar isotherm equation. From the vapor ? phase experiments, the average water loading of hardwood sawdust, kenaf core, and bleached wood pulp was 0.0037, 0.0076, and 0.0121 g H2O/g adsorbent, respectively. …

Design, Assembly, And Assessment Of An Experimental Apparatus To Measure Fouling Of Condenser Tubes, Gregory J. Zdaniuk Dec 2003

Design, Assembly, And Assessment Of An Experimental Apparatus To Measure Fouling Of Condenser Tubes, Gregory J. Zdaniuk

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the design, construction, and debugging of an experimental apparatus to measure fouling in smooth and/or augmented copper alloy condenser tubes. In addition, guidelines and recommendations are made for construction of similar devices. Specification sheets of the system components, detailed design calculations, and photographs of the apparatus are included in the appendices.

University Strategic Planning In Cameroon: What Lessons For Sub-Saharan Africa?, Terfot Augustine Ngwana Dec 2003

University Strategic Planning In Cameroon: What Lessons For Sub-Saharan Africa?, Terfot Augustine Ngwana

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article argues that the global, regional, and local realities can complement rather than contradict each other in the process of strategic planning for universities in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Using the case of the University of Buea in Cameroon, it attempts to use the global trends of polarisation in knowledge production capacity as an input or tool for identifying strategic choice in the process of strategic planning in institutions. The national policy background is used to highlight the context and inherent role of the central government in the process of institutional strategic planning.

Measurement Of Prompt Charm Meson Production Cross Sections In Pp̅ Collisions At √S=1.96 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on measurements of differential cross sections d /dpT for prompt charm meson production in pp̅ collisions at √s=1.96 TeV using 5.8±0.3 pb-1 of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region |y|≤1 in four fully reconstructed decay modes: D0→K- π+, D*+→D0 π+, D+→K- π+ π+, …

Collection Development Based On Patron Requests: Collaboration Between Interlibrary Loan And Acquisitions, Megan Allen, Suzanne M. Ward, Tanner Wray, Karl Debus-Lopez

Libraries Research Publications

Libraries are exploring new models of collaboration between interlibrary loan, collection development, and acquisitions. This paper presents two models in which libraries set aside acquisitions or other funds to purchase books requested by patrons through interlibrary loan processes. Workflows, scope criteria, and departmental relationships are described. The article reports on several aspects of the effectiveness of these models, such as turnaround time (comparable to traditional ILL loans), average cost per book ($37.00), and patron satisfaction (very high). The authors also address the subsequent circulation of titles and report on the bibliographers’ analysis of the relevance of the titles to the …
