Implications Of Face-To-Face And Web-Based Asynchronous Staff Development Approaches, John D. Solis Jan 2003

Implications Of Face-To-Face And Web-Based Asynchronous Staff Development Approaches, John D. Solis

Graduate Research Papers

As more institutions of higher education invest in technology, an increased number of educators have to keep up with those technologies. Technology opens new opportunities to teach and to learn. However, if technology is to be used to support learning, educators must first be comfortable using technology. In order for educators to become comfortable and to effectively use technology in their own teaching, staff development opportunities must be set in place. Staff development programs need to be relevant to the specific needs of educators of higher education. Because technology is rapidly changing, it is impossible for educators to know all …

Integrating Technology To Enhance Reading Comprehension, Ryan Thole Jan 2003

Integrating Technology To Enhance Reading Comprehension, Ryan Thole

Graduate Research Papers

This literature review explores whether or not using technology enhances the students reading comprehension of material. Studies in this review are in support of using computers for children when it comes to learning comprehension skills. Among the list of software, Accelerated Reader is one that is used frequently for testing what students remember after they have finished a book giving them immediate feedback. This review also is in agreement with the use of using computers for children to learn at their own pace. It provides the children with a sense of achievement that they learned it on their own, yet …

An Effectiveness Assessment Of The Quicktionary Reading Pen For Grades 3 Through 6, Barbara K. Waugh Jan 2003

An Effectiveness Assessment Of The Quicktionary Reading Pen For Grades 3 Through 6, Barbara K. Waugh

Graduate Research Papers

Testing of24 students in an Iowa public school in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades was conducted to determine if the Quicktionary Reading Pen improved reading accuracy. This was done using reading scores both with and without the pen and a standard t-test with the presence of the pen being the only variable in the study. The reading pen was found to have a positive effect, most notable with students with a reading accuracy below 90%. The increase was statistically significant at an 80% confidence interval or better. The pen had little effect for initial reading accuracy in excess of …

The Ceres-Rice Model-Based Estimates Of Potential Monsoon Season Rainfed Rice Productivity In Bangladesh, Rezaul Mahmood, Mark Meo, David R. Legates, Mark L. Morrissey

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Agricultural practices in Bangladesh are largely dependent on the monsoonal rainfall. Historically, Bangladesh often experiences severe droughts and floods during the monsoon months, with significant crop losses during both extreme conditions. This article provides a quantitative assessment of potential monsoon-season aman rice for four transplanting dates: 1 June, 1 July, 15 July, and 15 August. A crop-growth simulation model, the CERES-Rice, is applied to sixteen locations representing major rice-growing regions of Bangladesh to determine baseline yield estimates for four transplanting dates. The applications were conducted for 1975 through 1987. Average potential yield in Bangladesh is 6,907, 5,039, 3,637, and 1,762 …

The Campaign-Finance Crucible: Is Laissez Fair?, Jamin B. Raskin Jan 2003

The Campaign-Finance Crucible: Is Laissez Fair?, Jamin B. Raskin

Michigan Law Review

The 2001 passage of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act ("BCRA"), popularly known as "McCain-Feingold," set the stage for a momentous constitutional conflict in the United States Supreme Court in the 2003-04 Term. Among other things, the new legislation bans "soft money" contributions to the national political parties by corporations, labor unions, and individuals; prohibits state parties that are authorized to accept such contributions to spend the proceeds on activities related to federal elections; forbids federal candidates to participate in raising soft money; doubles the amount of "hard money" an individual can contribute in a federal election from $1,000 to $2,000 …

Detecting Stress In Glasshouse Plants Using Color Infrared Imagery: A Potential New Application For Remote Sensing, Kenneth R. Summy, Christopher R. Little, Ruben A. Mazariegos, James H. Everitt, M. R. Davis, J. V. French, A. W. Scott Jr.

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

English: Studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of color infrared (CIR) film for detecting physiological stress in plants located within glasshouse structures. Spectroradiometer measurements obtained within and outside of a structure constructed of polycarbonate plastic indicated no significant attenuation or disruption of visible and near-infrared radiation entering the structure. CIR photographs of cucumber seedlings (Cucumis sativus) obtained within the greenhouse were comparable in quality to those obtained outside the structure, and clearly distinguished between foliage of healthy plants and those subjected to a moderate level of nitrogen stress. In CIR imagery of a trifoliate orange tree (Poncirus trifoliata (L.) …

Computing Stable Models Of Logic Programs, Soumya Singhi Jan 2003

Computing Stable Models Of Logic Programs, Soumya Singhi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Solution of any search problem lies in its search space. A search is a systematic examination of candidate solutions of a search problem. In this thesis, we present a search heuristic that we can cr-smodels. cr-smodels prunes the search space to quickly reach to the solution of a problem. The idea is to pick an atom for branching , that lowers the growth rate of the linear recurrence and thuse, minimizes the remaining search space. Our goal in developing cr-smodels is to develop a search heuristic that is efficient on a wide range of problems. Then, we test cr-smodels over …

Modeling The Infrared Emission From Dust In Active Galactic Nuclei, Maia M. Nenkova Jan 2003

Modeling The Infrared Emission From Dust In Active Galactic Nuclei, Maia M. Nenkova

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are compact regions in the centers of some galaxies. They emit significantly in the whole range of the electromagnetic spectrum and show variability at different timescales. Observational evidence suggests the presence of a dusty torus obscuring the central radiation source of AGN. According to the Unified Model the observed general properties of AGN emission can be understood on the basis of orientation of this torus toward an observer. Two main types of AGN are distinguished: Type 1, with detected emission from the inner torus cavity viewed pole-on, and Type 2, viewed through the obscuring torus. There …

Modification Of The Nucleotide Cofactor-Binding Site Of Cytochrome P450 Reductase To Enhance Turnover With Nadh In Vivo, Calvin Lee Elmore Jan 2003

Modification Of The Nucleotide Cofactor-Binding Site Of Cytochrome P450 Reductase To Enhance Turnover With Nadh In Vivo, Calvin Lee Elmore

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase is the electron transfer partner for the cytochromes P450, heme oxygenase, and squalene monooxygenase, and is a component of the nitric oxide synthases and methionine synthase reductase. P450 reductase shows very high selectivity for NADPH and uses NADH only poorly. Substitution of tryptophan 677 with alanine (W677A) has been shown by others to yield a 3-fold increase in turnover with NADH, but profound inhibition by NADP+ makes the enzyme unsuitable for in vivo applications. In the present study site-directed mutagenesis of amino acids in the 2'-phosphate-binding site of the NADPH domain, coupled with the W677A substitution, was …

Experimental Investigation Of Separation In A Low Pressure Turbine Blade Cascade Model, Brian Hollon Jan 2003

Experimental Investigation Of Separation In A Low Pressure Turbine Blade Cascade Model, Brian Hollon

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The flow field around a low pressure turbine blade is examined using smoke-wire flow visualization, static surface pressure measurements, and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The purpose of the experimental study is to investigate the transition and separation characteristics on low pressure turbine blades under low Reynolds number (Re) and varying freestream turbulence intensity (FSTI). A cascade model consisting of 6 Pratt andamp; Whitney PAK-B low pressure turbine blades was examined in a wind tunnel using PIV and flow visualization. Smoke-wire visualization was performed for test section exit angles of 93°, 95°, and 97°, in the range Re = …

Digital Architecture As Crime Control, Neal K. Katyal Jan 2003

Digital Architecture As Crime Control, Neal K. Katyal

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper explains how theories of realspace architecture inform the prevention of computer crime. Despite the prevalence of the metaphor, architects in realspace and cyberspace have not talked to one another. There is a dearth of literature about digital architecture and crime altogether, and the realspace architectural literature on crime prevention is often far too soft for many software engineers. This paper will suggest the broad brushstrokes of potential design solutions to cybercrime, and in the course of so doing, will pose severe criticisms of the White House's recent proposals on cybersecurity.

The paper begins by introducing four concepts of …

Pushing Drugs: Genomics And Genetics, The Pharmaceutical Industry, And The Law Of Negligence, Heidi Li Feldman Jan 2003

Pushing Drugs: Genomics And Genetics, The Pharmaceutical Industry, And The Law Of Negligence, Heidi Li Feldman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article presents a piece of a larger, ongoing project on the phenomenon of market-driven manufacturing (MDM) and how tort law should address it. In contrast to the larger project, this article provides a relatively brief overview of the general phenomenon of MDM, but zeros in on how pharmaceutical manufacturers specifically practice MDM. MDM is a well-documented, much practiced activity, although American courts do not recognize MDM as a discrete category of conduct. The basic idea of MDM is that marketing considerations should continuously control every aspect and stage of a product's lifecycle. When a company engages in MDM, it …

The National Security Presidency In Constitutional Context: Reflections On Terrorism And The Presidency From The Last Ten Years, James E. Baker Jan 2003

The National Security Presidency In Constitutional Context: Reflections On Terrorism And The Presidency From The Last Ten Years, James E. Baker

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this time of terrorist threat, there is no more important institution to study than the national security presidency. That is because the president is singularly situated to command the instruments to counter terrorism. He is also singularly situated to ensure that such instruments are used effectively, lawfully, and in a manner consistent with constitutional values. I believe I have a duty, based on where I have been, to help others observe and understand the institution of the presidency. I do so because I want the national security presidency to succeed in providing for our physical security and in upholding …

A Survey Of Limited Nondeterminism In Computational Complexity Theory, Matthew Asher Levy Jan 2003

A Survey Of Limited Nondeterminism In Computational Complexity Theory, Matthew Asher Levy

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Nondeterminism is typically used as an inherent part of the computational models used incomputational complexity. However, much work has been done looking at nondeterminism asa separate resource added to deterministic machines. This survey examines several differentapproaches to limiting the amount of nondeterminism, including Kintala and Fischer's βhierarchy, and Cai and Chen's guess-and-check model.

Revising Horn Formulas, Jignesh Umesh Doshi Jan 2003

Revising Horn Formulas, Jignesh Umesh Doshi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Boolean formulas can be used to model real-world facts. In some situation we may havea Boolean formula that closely approximates a real-world fact, but we need to fine-tune itso that it models the real-world fact exactly. This is a problem of theory revision where thetheory is in the form of a Boolean formula. An algorithm is presented for revising a class ofBoolean formulas that are expressible as conjunctions of Horn clauses. Each of the clausesin the formulas considered here has a unique unnegated variable that does not appear inany other clauses, and is not `F'. The revision algorithm uses equivalence …

Elk Calf Survival, Mortality, And Neonatal Habitat Use In Eastern Kentucky, Nathan W. Seward Jan 2003

Elk Calf Survival, Mortality, And Neonatal Habitat Use In Eastern Kentucky, Nathan W. Seward

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

I estimated survival, cause-specific mortality, and neonatal habitat use of elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) calves in eastern Kentucky. I also measured habitat characteristics of elk parturition sites and annual calf production . Radio-collared females were fitted with vaginal implant transmitters and monitored for parturition behavior to locate, capture, and radio-collar calves during the springs of 2001 and 2002. Thirty-seven adult females with implant transmitters were translocated from Logan, Utah, to Addington Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in eastern Kentucky. Additional females from previous releases during 1997 and 1998 were monitored for parturition behavior. Mean calf production for all females monitored (n=77) …
