The purpose of this study was to determine if two different amounts of almonds added to a heart healthy diet would increase vitamin E concentrations in healthy men and women, and reflect positive fatty acid profiles in serum lipids and erythrocytes. Twenty three subjects participated in a crossover metabolic study for a 14 week period. Subjects consumed one of three diets for 4 weeks each, a control diet, a low almond diet and a high almond diet after a 2 week run-in period. Volatile anesthetics protect myocardium against reversible and irreversible ischemic injury. Experimental evidence from several in vitro and in vivo animal models demonstrates that volatile agents enhance the recovery of stunned myocardium and reduce the size of myocardial infarction after brief or prolonged coronary artery occlusion and reperfusion, respectively. This protective effect persists after the anesthetic has been discontinued, a phenomenon known as anesthetic-induced preconditioning (APC). Recent clinical data also demonstrates evidence of APC in patients during cardiac surgery. Thus, administration of volatile anesthetics may represent a novel therapeutic approach that reduces morbidity and mortality associated with perioperative myocardial ischemia and …

People optimize reaching to make straight and smooth movements. We performed experiments characterizing human sensitivity to hand path deviations from a straight reach. Vision of the arm was blocked. Subjects either moved the hand along paths of constrained curvature, or a robot moved the relaxed limb along similar trajectories (active and passive conditions, respectively). Subjects responded after each trial whether or not they thought the movement curved convex right. Entomologic studies were conducted in eight villages to investigate the patterns of malaria transmission in different ecologic zones in Eritrea. Mosquito collections were conducted for 24 months between September 1999 and January 2002. The biting rates of Anopheles arabiensis were highly seasonal, with activity concentrated in the wet season between June and October in the highlands and western lowlands, and between December and March in the coastal region. The biting rates in the western lowlands were twice as high as in the western escarpment and 20 times higher than in the coastal region. Sporozoite rates were not significantly different among …

Three lepidopteran stemborers, Busseola fusca Fuller (Noctuidae), Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae), and Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), were evaluated for their acceptability for oviposition and suitability for development by two populations of the larval endoparasitoid Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) occurring in the highveld (>1200m) and lowveld (<600 m) regions of Zimbabwe. Mating studies were also conducted to determine reproductive compatibility between the populations. Both C. sesamiae populations preferred the noctuids to C. partellus for oviposition. possibly reflecting differences in evolutionary history. Although B. fusca was partially suitable for development of lowveld C. sesamiae, all three hosts were suitable for development of the highveld population. Crosses between highveld and lowveld C. sesamiae were compatible, and were generally not different from the intra-population crosses in developmental time, % adult emergence and sex ratio. However, broods were much larger when highveld males were used in the mating combinations. We conclude that although there is host overlap and probably a considerable degree of outbreeding between the two C. sesamiae populations, there are still significant genetic differences between them. Within Zimbabwe, it is unlikely that the deliberate introduction of either population outside its region of occurrence will give meaningful stemborer control. © 2003 Elsevier Science (USA). The attraction of Cotesia flavipes Cameron to volatiles from a range of non-target lepidopteran larvae and their host plants (grasses and trees) or food substrate (honeycomb) was evaluated using a Y-tube olfactometer. The non-target host larvae used in the study included Galleria mellonella (L.), Charaxes cithaeron Felder, Bombyx mori L., and Eldana saccharina Walker. The target insects, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) and Chilo orichalcociliellus (Strand), were used as controls. Host plants included Afzelia quanzensis Welw., Morus alba L., Cyperus papyrus L., Pennisetum purpureum Schumach, and Zea mays L. Psyttalia cosyrae (Wilkinson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a synovigenic, koinobiont larval-pupal parasitoid of Ceratitis cosyra (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae), and possibly other tephritid fruit flies. Host acceptance and suitability of medfly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), mango fruit fly, Ceratitis cosyra, Natal fruit fly, Ceratitis rosa Karsch, Ceratitis fasciventris (Bezzi), Ceratitis anonae Graham, and melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae), for oviposition and development of this parasitoid were investigated. The seasonal dynamics and spatial distributions of Anopheles mosquitoes and Plasmodium falciparum parasites were studied for one year at 30 villages in Malindi, Kilifi, and Kwale Districts along the coast of Kenya. Anopheline mosquitoes were sampled inside houses at each site once every two months and malaria parasite prevalence in local school children was determined at the end of the entomologic survey. A total of 5,476 Anopheles gambiae s.l. and 3,461 An. funestus were collected. Species in the An. gambiae complex, identified by a polymerase chain reaction, included 81.9% An. gambiae s.s., 12.8% An. arabiensis, and 5.3% An. merus. Anopheles …

Natural Attenuation Of Roadway Runoff In A Vegetated Channel: A Comparison Between A Winter And A Non-Winter Storm Event, Annalisa Gianfrancesco

A winter and a non-winter storm were sampled to compare the natural attenuation of roadway runoff within a channel. Samples were taken at three sampling locations within the channel during a non-winter and winter storm. Analyzed constituents of the samples include: trace metals, nutrients, hardness, halide, suspended solids, organic compounds and physical parameters. Comparisons of inlet constituent loads for each storm showed a significant increase in constituents in the winter storm. Reduction efficiencies throughout the channel length were calculated and the winter storm was found to have had lower removal rates per length of the swale.

Students at the upper secondary-school level sometimes experience difficulties understanding basic historical concepts as well as appreciating the relevance of history as a subject in the school's curriculum. While these students are capable of formulating perspectives of their own, teachers often find it necessary to guide students' thinking toward an accepted paradigm (scholarly concept) of history. The problem is that there are mismatched paradigms that teachers need to bring together in order to establish a foundation for a scholarly approach to history.

The study can be set in the context of the declining popularity of engineering as a career choice for males and the continuing under-representation of females, for whom engineering is a non-traditional career choice. This paper applies a stochastic production frontier model to measure total factor productivity growth, technical efficiency change and technological change in Bangladesh crop agriculture for the 31 observations from 1960/61 to 1991/92, using data for 16 regions. The results reveal that technical change followed a U‐shaped pattern, rising from the early 1970s, when the green revolution varieties were adopted, giving an overall rate of technical progress at 0.27 per cent per year. However, technical efficiency declined throughout, at an estimated annual rate of 0.47 per cent. The combined effect of slow technical progress, dominated by the fall in technical efficiency …

BACKGROUND: Hibernation is a state of extremely reduced physiological functions and a deep depression of CNS activity. We have previously shown that the histamine levels increase in the brain during hibernation, as does the ratio between histamine and its first metabolite, suggesting increased histamine turnover during this state. The inhibitory histamine H3 receptor has both auto- and heteroreceptor function, rendering it the most likely histamine receptor to be involved in regulating the activity of histamine as well as other neurotransmitters during hibernation. Previous studies on concordant acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in identical twins have identified the leukemia as monoclonal with MLL or ETV6-RUNX1 gene fusion as early or initiating events in utero. In the latter case, postnatal latency is associated with secondary genetic events such as ETV6 deletion. We describe here a pair of infant twins with concordant acute monoblastic leukemia (AML). They are a unique pair in that their leukemia blasts display extensive intraclonal chromosomal diversity.
