The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze Jan 2003

The Role Of Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer's Disease, Robin Petroze

Kaleidoscope

Over four million individuals in the United States currently suffer from Alzheimer's disease (AD), a devastating disorder of progressive dementia. Within the next several decades, AD is expected to affect over 22 million people globally. AD can only be definitively diagnosed by postmortem examination. Thus, investigation into the specific pathogenesis of neuronal degeneration and death in AD on a biochemical level is essential for both earlier diagnosis and potential treatment and prevention options. Overproduction of amyloid [3-peptide (A[3) in the brain leads to both free radical oxidative stress and toxicity to neurons in AD. My undergraduate biochemical studies with regard …

Restricting The Use Of Animal Traps In The United States: An Overview Of Laws And Strategy, Dena M. Jones, Sheila Hughes Rodriguez Jan 2003

Restricting The Use Of Animal Traps In The United States: An Overview Of Laws And Strategy, Dena M. Jones, Sheila Hughes Rodriguez

Animal Law Review

Enacting absolute bans on the use of trapping devices and on commerce in trapped animal products has been difficult. Nearly every state, however, has enacted some restrictions on who can trap, what animals can be trapped, where and when animals can be trapped, the type and size of permitted traps, and how often traps must be checked. This article summarizes past and potential approaches to curtail the use of traps in the U.S. at federal, state and local levels. The article also notes litigation related to trapping and trapping prohibitions.

A Comparison Of The Epithelium To Mesenchyme Transformation Process In Cultured Embryonic Chick Neural Crest Cells And Human Metastatic Cervical Cancer Cells, Molly Decker Jan 2003

A Comparison Of The Epithelium To Mesenchyme Transformation Process In Cultured Embryonic Chick Neural Crest Cells And Human Metastatic Cervical Cancer Cells, Molly Decker

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Embryonic neural crest cells (NCCs) and metastasizing cancer cells both undergo an epithelium to mesenchyme transformation (EMT) during which they disengage from neighboring cells and basement membrane and actively migrate to new locations. NCCs, small groups of cells that emerge from the neural tube, move directionally through adjacent tissues to reach specific destinations where they differentiate into a diverse array of specific cells and tissues. Caski cells are an established line of metastatic cervical cancer cells that contain HPV. We compared NCCs to Caski cells during EMT with respect to the expression of key proteins related to cell migration-integrin, paxillin, …

Effectiveness Of Educator-Oriented Content Courses, Joslyn K. Burt Jan 2003

Effectiveness Of Educator-Oriented Content Courses, Joslyn K. Burt

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The idea of teaching science strikes fear into the hearts and minds of many elementary teachers; however, as a core piece of the overall curriculum, they cannot escape teaching science. The courses taken at the university and the professional development classes taken on the job play a critical role in helping educators feel comfortable teaching science. Such courses also impact how the content is taught by introducing the best practices used in science teaching.

As a Basic Science Minor in the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa, I have taken many science content courses and several courses …

Geosciences For Elementary Educators: A Course Assessment, M. L. Cummings, M. Goodrich, D. Burmester

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

Geosciences for Elementary Educators engages future elementary teachers in a hands-on investigation of topics aligned with the third and fifth grade Earth/Space Science and Scientific Inquiry benchmarks of the Oregon Content Standards. The course was designed to develop the content background of elementary teachers within the framework of the science described in the content standards, to provide an opportunity for future teachers to explore the content area in relation to what takes place in the classrooms of elementary schools, and to initiate a community of learners focused on teaching science to elementary students. The course focused on four themes: the …

Lessons Learned From Efforts At Institutional Change: Case Studies Of Six Ocept Institutions, T. G. Chenoweth, M. K. Kinnick, R. D. Walleri Jan 2003

Lessons Learned From Efforts At Institutional Change: Case Studies Of Six Ocept Institutions, T. G. Chenoweth, M. K. Kinnick, R. D. Walleri

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

As one part of a multifaceted evaluation of the Oregon Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (OCEPT), a case study approach was used to enable a deeper understanding of how a diverse group of six institutions attempted to achieve OCEPT goals and to learn more about factors that facilitated or hindered their efforts. Multiple sources of data were used, with heavy reliance on a series of on-site interviews. The analytical framework included a "depth" and "pervasiveness" typology of institutional change and a view of change as encompassing "meaning," "organization," and "effects." While goals and accomplishment levels, as well …

Use Of The Combination Of The Brief And Basc-2 In Assessment Of Adhd, Andrea R. Knoll

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ADHD is one of the most frequently diagnosed childhood disorders in the United States today; however, diagnostic specificity remains challenging. Accepted models of ADHD routinely highlight the role of executive function (EF) deficits as a core feature of ADHD. However, performance based measures of EF do not consistently discriminate between ADHD and no-ADHD clinical groups. Research has supported use of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) in discriminating between ADHD and no-ADHD and between subtypes. However, EF deficits can occur for various reasons. Broad range behavior rating scales help identify areas of behavioral concern that may aid clinicians …

Personal Projects And Motives For Drinking Behavior In College Students: An Exploratory Study, Nicole Ann Shiber Jan 2003

Personal Projects And Motives For Drinking Behavior In College Students: An Exploratory Study, Nicole Ann Shiber

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Goals are used as ways to guide behavior. Goals have also been suggested to be related to an individual's decisions to use alcohol. A well-accepted model is the motivational model of alcohol use which utilizes goals and other factors that weigh into the final common pathway” which is a motivationally influenced decision. Part of this motivational model are the four motives for drinking established by Cooper (1994), which are enhancement, coping, social, and conformity. In addition, this motivational model has a strong affective component and is considered an emotional regulation model of alcohol use. College students' general life goals for …

Matrix Heterogeneity And Host-Parasitoid Interactions In Space, James T. Cronin Jan 2003

Matrix Heterogeneity And Host-Parasitoid Interactions In Space, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

In this study, I experimentally examined how the landscape matrix influenced the movement, oviposition behavior, and spatial distribution of Anagrus columbi, a common egg parasitoid of the planthopper Prokelisia crocea. Both species exist among discrete patches of prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata), the sole host plant of P. crocea. Based on out-planted cordgrass pots bearing host eggs (to assess parasitism) or sticky leaves (traps for adult A. columbi), I found that the distribution of adult female A. columbi and pattern of ovipositions within a cordgrass patch were strongly matrix dependent. Female densities were 59% lower on the edge than interior of …

Matrix Composition Affects The Spatial Ecology Of A Prairie Planthopper, Kyle J. Haynes, James T. Cronin Jan 2003

Matrix Composition Affects The Spatial Ecology Of A Prairie Planthopper, Kyle J. Haynes, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

To date, there is a lack of well-controlled field experiments that disentangle the effects of the intervening matrix from other landscape variables (e.g., patch geography or quality) that might influence animal dispersal among patches. We performed a field experiment to investigate how the movement of a delphacid planthopper (Prokelisia crocea) among discrete patches of prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata) is affected by the composition of the matrix (mudflat, native nonhost grasses, and the introduced grass smooth brome [Bromus inermis]). Within each matrix type, marked planthoppers were released onto experimental cordgrass patches that were made identical in size, isolation, and host plant …

Influence Of The El Niño Southern Oscillation On Fire Regimes In The Florida Everglades, Brian Beckage, William J. Platt, Matthew G. Slocum, Bob Panko Jan 2003

Influence Of The El Niño Southern Oscillation On Fire Regimes In The Florida Everglades, Brian Beckage, William J. Platt, Matthew G. Slocum, Bob Panko

Faculty Publications

Disturbances that are strongly linked to global climatic cycles may occur in a regular, predictable manner that affects composition and distribution of ecological communities. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences worldwide precipitation patterns and has occurred with regular periodicity over the last 130 000 years. We hypothesized that ENSO, through effects on local weather conditions, has influenced frequency and extent of fires within Everglades National Park (Florida, USA). Using data from 1948 to 1999, we found that the La Nina phase of ENSO was associated with decreased dry-season rainfall, lowered surface water levels, increased lightning strikes, more fires, and …

Use Of Common Weeds Of Rice As Hosts For The Rice Water Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), K. V. Tindall, M. J. Stout Jan 2003

Use Of Common Weeds Of Rice As Hosts For The Rice Water Weevil (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), K. V. Tindall, M. J. Stout

Faculty Publications

The rice water weevil, Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel, is the most important insect pest in rice, Oryza sativa L., in the United States, Prior research indicates that rice water weevils feed primarily on monocotyledonous plants. Many monocot weeds occur in rice fields, but little is known about rice water weevil-weed interactions in rice. Host utilization of the rice water weevil was evaluated on rice, cultivar 'Cocodrie', and seven weeds commonly found in rice fields in preference and life cycle compatibility tests in the greenhouse. Barnyardgrass, Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv., yellow nutsedge, Cyperus esculentus L., broadleaf signalgrass, Brachiaria platyphylla Nash., and fall panicum, …

Faculty Publications

Clinical, serological, and pathological abnormalities observed in Holstein cows naturally infected with bovine lentivirus 1 bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) and other infections were progressive and most commonly associated with weight loss, lymphoid system deficiency, and behavioral changes. Clinical evidence of meningoencephalitis was dullness, stupor, and occasional head or nose pressing postures. The polymerase chain reactions associated the BIV provirus with the lesions in the central nervous system and lymphoid tissues. Multiple concurrent infections developed in retrovirally infected cows undergoing normal stresses associated with parturition and lactation. A major functional correlate of the lymphoreticular alterations was the development of multiple secondary …

Allelic Heterogeneity In Line-1 Retrotransposition Activity, Sheila M. Lutz, Bethaney J. Vincent, Haig H. Kazazian, Mark A. Batzer, John V. Moran

Faculty Publications

De novo LINE-1 (long interspersed element-1, or L1) retrotransposition events are responsible for ∼1/1,000 disease-causing mutations in humans. Previously, L1.2 was identified as the likely progenitor of a mutagenic insertion in the factor VIII gene in a patient with hemophilia A. It subsequently was shown to be one of a small number of active L1s in the human genome. Here, we demonstrate that L1.2 is present at an intermediate insertion allele frequency in worldwide human populations and that common alleles (L1.2A and L1.2B) exhibit an ∼16-fold difference in their ability to retrotranspose in cultured human HeLa cells. Chimera analysis revealed …

Although Africa has played a central role in human evolutionary history, certain studies have suggested that not all contemporary human genetic diversity is of recent African origin. We investigated 35 simple polymorphic sites and one Tn microsatellite in an 8-kb segment of the dystrophin gene. We found 86 haplotypes in 1,343 chromosomes from around the world. Although a classical out-of-Africa topology was observed in trees based on the variant frequencies, the tree of haplotype sequences reveals three lineages accounting for present-day diversity. The proportion of new recombinants and the diversity of the Tn microsatellite were used to estimate the age …
