Habitat Associations And Ecology Of Sonoma Tree Vole (Arborimus Pomo) In Northwest California, Jennifer M. Jones

The Sonoma tree vole (Arborimus porno) is a California Species of Special Concern and an important prey species of the Northern Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis caurina). Management of A. porno has been limited by the scarcity of biological data and a lack of understanding of its habitat requirements. I compared relative tree vole abundance among three size classes of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga rnenziesii) stands in 2000: pole (15-28 cm DBH), unthinned young-growth (29-61 cm DBH), and mature (>61 cm DBH). "Science In Skirts": Representations Of Women In Science In The "B" Science Fiction Films Of The 1950s, Bonnie Noonan

This project shows how central representations of women in science were to the “B” science fiction films of the 1950s and uses these films as valuable indicators for cultural analysis. I argue that the emergence of the modern American science fiction film in 1950 combined with the situation of post-W.W.II women in science to create a genre explicitly amenable to exploring the tension between a woman’s place in the home and her place in the work force, particularly in the fields of science. Advances in scientific knowledge and new techniques of remote sensing permit a better understanding of the physical land features governing hydrologic processes, and make possible efficient, large-scale hydrologic modeling. The need for land-cover and hydrologic response change detection at a larger scale and at times of the year when hydrologic studies are critical makes satellite imagery the most cost effective, efficient and reliable source of data. In this work, remotely-sensed data and geographic information system (GIS) tools were used to estimate the changes in runoff response for three watersheds (Etonia, Econlockhatchee, and S-65A sub- basins) in Florida. The ability to regulate cell volume is an ancient conserved trait present in essentially all species through evolution. The maintenance of a constant cell volume is a homeostatic imperative in animal cells. Changes in cell water content affecting the concentration of intracellular messenger molecules impair the complex signaling network, crucial for cell functioning and intercellular communication. Although the renal homeostatic mechanisms exert a precise control of extracellular fluid osmolarity, this is challenged in a variety of pathological situations. Are Chlorella Viruses A Rich Source Of Ion Channel Genes?, Ming Kang, Anna Moroni, Sabrina Gazzarrini, James L. Van Etten

Plaque-forming dsDNA (>330 kb) viruses that infect certain unicellular, eukaryotic chlorella-like green algae contain ~375 protein-encoding genes. These proteins include a 94 amino acid K+ channel protein, called Kcv, as well as two putative ligand-gated ion channels. The viruses also encode other proteins that could be involved in the assembly and/ or function of ion channels, including protein kinases and a phosphatase, polyamine biosynthetic enzymes and histamine decarboxylase.

New Hampshire’s estuaries are dynamic, complex systems that greatly influence the Seacoast’s economy, communities, quality of life and environment.To understand how these systems function and to gauge their relative health, the New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) tracks key environmental indicators and evaluates their status against a set of management goals. This report communicates the status of 12 of the 30 environmental indicators tracked by the NHEP. For each indicator it provides the reader with the associated NHEP management goal, explanation of supporting data, and some of the NHEP supported activities that help achieve the management goal.

Plant pathology has made significant progress over the years, a process that involved overcoming a variety of conceptual and technological hurdles. Descriptive mycology and the advent of chemical plant-disease management have been followed by biochemical and physiological studies of fungi and their hosts. The later establishment of biochemical genetics along with the introduction of DNA-mediated transformation have set the stage for dissection of gene function and advances in our understanding of fungal cell biology and plant–fungus interactions. Currently, with the advent of high-throughput technologies, we have the capacity to acquire vast data sets that have direct relevance to the numerous …

The goal of this paper is to document the significant contributors, contents, methodologies, developments, and theoretical frameworks relevant to the anthropological study of homosexuality in Latin America. Among other data, this research project yields regional accounts of gay / lesbian liberation movements, transvestitism, HIV I AIDS, and the intersections of gender and power in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, and Argentina. Also included in this review are critical assessments of academic sources, ethical dilemmas faced by ethnographers, and spaces available for original research on homosexuality in Latin America.
