Metal cycling via physical and chemical weathering of discrete sources (copper mines) and regional (non-point) sources (sulfide-rich shale) is evaluated by examining the mineralogy and chemistry of weathering products in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, and North Carolina, USA. The elements in copper mine waste, secondary minerals, stream sediments, and waters that are most likely to have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems are aluminum, copper, zinc, and arsenic because these elements locally exceed toxicity guidelines for surface waters or for stream sediments. Acid-mine drainage has not developed in streams draining inactive copper mines. Acid-rock drainage and chemical weathering processes …

Stimulating Fear Reduction: Visual Stimulus, Verbal And Spatial Concentration And Their Effects On Fear, Gregory E. Dixon

Modern Psychological Studies

Studies have suggested that visual stimuli evoking positive emotions may counter the effects of negative emotions. A high level of involvement in a distracting task may reduce the severity of negative emotions. This study combined visual stimuli with level of mental involvement to determine if they had an effect on fear. It was posited that two types of visual stimuli—amusing and spatial—would lower fear, and a high level of involvement with each stimulus would enhance this effect. The stimuli were delivered over the Internet. Fear level was measured using the self-report for the word "afraid" from PANAS. A significant interaction …

It has been suggested that the consistent luminance difference between the darker regions of the eyes and mouth and the lighter regions that surround them forms a pattern unique to faces. One of the more consistent uses of cosmetics to make the female face more attractive is to darken the eyes and mouth relative to the surrounding skin. The hypothesis that the size of the luminance difference between the eyes and mouth and the rest of the face affects the attractiveness of male and female faces differently was tested in four experiments in which attractiveness ratings were obtained for images …

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, legislators, business owners, consumers and everyday citizens, all with a view of how to protect our interests, voiced their opinions on how to improve national security with patriotic zest. FIFRA's main purpose is to ensure federal regulation of pesticide distribution and use. This power is of particular importance given the terroristic threat of possible chemical warfare. Chemical professionals were cognizant of the importance of site security even prior to the September 11th terrorist attacks. In the wake of violent episodes committed by male youths in schools, many male adolescents grapple with the traditional norm of masculinity and the role it might play in contributing to such violence. School counselors need to address the developmental needs of all male youth, because schools play a significant role in the construction of male identities. This article formulates an overarching, inclusive model of integral counseling that enables school counselors to help male adolescents challenge the norm of conventional masculinity. Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Water quality and benthic invertebrates in the Ensign Hollow watershed, southwestern Clayton County and southeastern Fayette County, Iowa, were monitored from 2000 to 2001. Measurements of physical and chemical parameters of water quality, as well as analysis of benthic invertebrates, all indicated that streams of the Ensign Hollow watershed were exposed to slight organic pollution. Furthermore, the greatest threat to this watershed appeared to be sedimentation introduced through runoff.

Population Policy and Demographic Analysis

The human life span continues to increase even in already low-mortality populations—with major implications for societies and economies. Classical evolutionary theory accounts for survival only through the age of reproduction. A more elaborate theory, integrating biological and demographic perspectives, is required to explain these current trends in longevity and to gauge their future course. The papers collected in this supplement to Population and Development Review contribute to the development of such a theory. This article addresses the question as to whether a federal court has the authority to compel a pharmaceutical company to disgorge profits obtained from an alleged violation of the FDCA, specifically the failure of a pharmaceutical company to comply with current good manufacturing practices (GMPs). Section II of this article summarizes the article to which we are responding. In all fairness, it did not purport to be a full-blown defense, and we expect the agency's comprehensive defense of disgorgement would be considerably more detailed. Hypertonic stress (HS) can alter the function of mammalian cells. We have reported that HS enhances differentiated responses of T cells by increasing their ability to produce interleukin (IL)-2, a finding of clinical interest because hypertonic infusions may modulate immune function in patients. HS shrinks cells and mechanically deforms membranes, which results in ATP release from many cell types. Here we investigate if ATP release is an underlying mechanism through which HS augments T cell function. We found that mechanical stress and HS induced rapid ATP release from Jurkat T cells. We report a case of a Familial Hypercholesterolaemic (FH) patient (FH1) and her family members. They are Malaysian of Indian origin with evidence of consanguinity in the parents. We characterised the LDL receptor gene mutation in FH1, her brother (S1) and their mother, P2. The father (P1) died of coronary heart disease (CHD) in his early 40â��s. Our investigation reveals that FH1 and her family do not carry the two of the major known Familial Defective ApoB mutations, Arg3500Gln and Arg3531Cys. Sequencing analysis of the LDL receptor gene demonstrated that FH1 is homozygous for a G to A substitution at …

Sixty-three isolates of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi (S.typhi) from sporadic cases of typhoid fever obtained from Malaysia (n=6), Vietnam (n=13), India (n=8) and Pakistan (n=36) were characterized by phage typing, drug-susceptibility testing, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with restriction endonuclease, XbaI. The strains analyzed were mostly resistant to ampicillin, co-trimoxazole, tetracycline and chloramphenicol. These strains were represented by phage types, E1, E9, 46, J1, VNS and UVS. PFGE analysis showed that multidrug resistant (MDR) strains isolated in different countries and at different periods were genetically very homogenous where 90% of the strains analyzed had very …
