Parkinsons Disease In Occupational Exposure To Joss Paper, A Report Of Two Cases, N.K. Chew, M.K. Lee, M. Ali, C.T. Tan

We report two genetically unrelated ethnic Chinese women, aged 63 and 60 years, who developed Parkinsons disease at the age of 55 and 53 years respectively. Both cases were working in the same joss paper shop for 15 years prior to the onset of Parkinsons disease. There was no family history of Parkinsons disease and exposure to other chemical or toxic agents. Biochemical analysis of joss papers revealed the presence of heavy metals such as lead, copper, zinc, and mercury, which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinsons disease. Rare Actinomycetes In Mangrove Soils And Leaf Litter, S. Vikineswary, A. Ismet, Kwai Lin Thong, S. Paramaswari

Actinomycetes are one of the major sources for the discovery of novel bioactive compounds. A total of 226 actinomycete strains were isolated from Morib mangrove soils and leaf litter samples in Malaysia. The actinomycete populations ranged from 6.0 x lO" to 20.0 x 10' colony-forming units (cfu)/g dry sample. Total populations and tentative distributions of actinomycetes varied significantly with the different types of mangrove samples. The tentative genus diversity in mangrove soil and leaf litter was Micromonospora, 49%; Streptosporangium, l7%; Streptomgces, 7%; Actinomadura, 4%; Saccharomonospora, 2% and others (Microbispora, Nocardia, Dactylosporangium and Actinoplanes) 2O%. The gene encoding the excretory-secretory antigen TES-120 of dog ascarid worm Toxocara canis was cloned into the bacterium Escherichia coli. The specificity of the recombinant TES- 120 antigen produced by the bacterium was investigated.A total of 45 human serum samples from patients infected with different helminthes and protozoa, including 8 cases of toxocariasis, were tested against the recombinant antigens in immunoblot assays. The results from the assays revealed that the recombinant TES-120 antigen reacted with sera from toxocariasis patients only. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a serious pathogen of many economically important commercial fruit and vegetable crops worldwide. It is a particular problem in warmer climates, where plants are not grown under cover thus necessitating undesirably high use of agrochemicals for the control of insect vectors. Efforts towards controlling of this virus would include the development of improved methods of virus detection including the ability to produce cost effective and specific reagents. Technical Improvement In Dna Preparation For Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis, Kwai Lin Thong, K.S. Lai, Yee Ling Goh

We report a rapid pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) protocol for subtyping Salmonella isolates. Modifications were made to reduce the number of steps and duration of proteolysis in our original protocol for the preparation of intact, genomic DNA for PFGE analysis. Comparison of PFGE patterns by independent researchers showed that subtyping results using this modified, rapid protocol were highly reproducible.

Isoprene is emitted from numerous plant species and profoundly influences tropospheric chemistry. Due to the short lifetime of isoprene in the atmosphere, developing an understanding of emission patterns at small time scales is essential for modeling regional atmospheric chemistry processes. Previous studies suggest that diurnal fluctuations in isoprene emission may be substantial, leading to inaccuracies in emission estimates at larger scales. We examined diurnal patterns in the basal emission rate of isoprene in red oak (Quercus rubra), eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides), and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus saligna) and the influence of light and temperature on the magnitude of these diurnal patterns. Bats are ecologically and economically important mammals. The life histories of bats (particularly their low reproductive rates and the need for some species to gather in large aggregations at limited numbers of roosting sites) make their populations vulnerable to declines. Many of the species of bats in the United States (U.S.) and territories are categorized as endangered or threatened, have been candidates for such categories, or are considered species of concern. The importance and vulnerability of bat populations makes monitoring trends in their populations a goal for their future management. Is man inherently good or evil? Nineteenth century Romantics, inspired by the doctrine of Jean Jacques Rousseau, hypothesized that man is a product of his or her environment. Middle class society imputed the mother as the gateway by which a child learns to become a model human being. This theory held that mothers nurture their offspring naturally. Children learn proper morals and social conduct based upon a female-inspired education. Without this domestic influence on their lives, children fall into the trap of an “eye for an eye” ideology. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the response of supplementing primiparous heifers based on the metabolizable protein (MP) system during pregnancy and lactation. In Exp. 1, 12 pregnant, March-calving heifers (432 ± 10 kg) grazing Sandhills range were randomly allotted to one of two treatments: supplementation based on either the MP system (MPR) or the CP system (CPR). Supplements were fed to individual heifers from October to February and no hay was offered. Grazed forage organic matter intake (FOMI) was measured in November, January, and February. The Penn State Particle Separator has led to widespread measurement of forage and total mixed ration (TMR) particle size. However, a large proportion of small particles may pass through both sieves when a TMR is analyzed, and field research has suggested that both shaking frequency and sample dry matter may affect the results. The objectives of this project were to test the effects of an additional sieve with a smaller aperture size, shaking frequency, and sample moisture content on results obtained. Older hens in production lay larger but fewer eggs than younger birds, and the incidence of soft and broken shells is greater in older hens than younger. These changes are attributable at least in part to changing hormone profiles and diminished ability of the hen to transport calcium at the duodenum. In further exploration of this relationship, a study was conducted with three ages of Hy-Line W-36 birds: prelay pullets (PL; 19 wk, 0% production), peak-production hens (PP; 29 wk, ∼93% production), and late-stage hens (LS; 71 wk, ∼80% production). Managing At-Risk Juvenile Offenders In The Community: Putting Evidence Based Principles Into Practice, Randy Borum

Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications

More than a half-million juveniles are under community supervision as a result of violent or delinquent behavior. Research has shown that treatment can reduce their risk of reoffending. This article reviews and distills the key lessons from hundreds of empirical studies and metaanalyses and applies them to practice. The author argues for conducting systematic and developmentally informed risk assessments, selectively assigning intensive intervention to the highest risk offenders, focusing on criminogenic treatment targets, using proven interventions and treatment strategies, and applying rigor in implementation and follow-up.
