The Japanese pelagic longline fishery, which has a broad temporal and spatial coverage in the Atlantic Ocean, provides an important time series used in assessments of istiophorid billfishes. Past assessments of Atlantic blue marlin and white marlin by the ICCAT SCRS indicate a pronounced decrease in stock abundance of both species over the past fifty years. The current biomass of the white marlin is estimated to be 15% of that necessary for maximum sustainable yield (BMSY), while blue marlin are estimated to be at 0.4 BMSY. A benthic assessment of the isolated Cayman Islands was completed at 42 sites. Major changes in the reef community structure were documented by comparison with earlier studies. Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, once abundant as shallow framework builders, were uncommon. Diseased stony corals were seen in >90% of the study sites, with the highest averages in Little Cayman, especially at Bloody Bay which is one of the most highly regulated marine parks in the Cayman Islands. The Montastraea annularis species complex accounted for two-thirds of the diseased corals which, along with other massive species, were affected largely by white-plague …

In newborn adoptions in the United States, the participation rights of too many unwed, fit biological fathers are unfairly considered. Some fathers have little or uncertain information about their children prior to or at birth through no fault of their own, yet are denied participation rights. Other fathers have little guidance on the steps necessary under law to prompt an opportunity to participate. Governments do little truly to inform and guide, though the parental opportunity interest involves "one of mankind's most important rights," often accorded federal constitutional protection. A study has been undertaken to monitor Broward County, Florida (southeast Florida) coral communities, reef fish assemblages and sedimentation rates in relation to possible effects from a proposed extensive beach renourishment (restoration) project. Coral communities and reef fish assemblages will be monitored at a total of 23 stations distributed offshore Broward County. This monitoring effort will characterize and quantify populations of scleractinian (stony) corals, octocorallian (gorgonian) corals, sponges, and reef fishes. In addition, sediment traps located at each station will be sampled and analyzed.

Nancy C. Unger and J. Michael Butler take up the question of the targeting of Jews for elimination in the Holocaust. Was this emphasis a special case or part of a broader spectrum of elimination policies designed to rid Germany of all groups designated as undesirable by Nazi ideology— including homosexuals, Gypsies, and the mentally ill?

Unger argues for the specificity of the targeting of the Jewish population for extermination by comparing it to the case of homosexuals. Homosexual men were incarcerated in the death camps, and many were killed in the course of the Holocaust, but, Unger argues, their …

Long-Term Observations Of A Harbor Seal Haul-Out Site In A Protected Cove In Casco Bay, Gulf Of Maine, David Harris Phd, Barbarai Lelli, Sat Gupta

We counted the numbers of seals hauled out at low tide on two near-shore ledges in a protected cove in Casco Bay, Gulf of Maine a minimum of 12 times per month, for four years starting in August 1997. The highest mean monthly counts were in August (molting season) and the lowest in either January or February. Counts during pupping season (May and June) were lower than during April or July. As no mother-pup pairs were observed, these ledges are molting but not pupping ledges. Time-series analysis revealed no overall trend in the number of seals present. but did show …

Six high-resolution climatic reconstructions, based on diatom analyses from lake sediment cores from the northern prairies of North America, show that shifts in drought conditions on decadal through multicentennial scales have prevailed in this region for at least the last two millennia. The predominant broad-scale pattern seen at all sites is a major shift in moisture regimes from wet to dry, or vice versa (depending on location), that occurred after a period of relative stability. These large-scale shifts at the different sites exhibit spatial coherence at regional scales. The three Canadian sites record this abrupt shift between anno Domini 500 …

Monocytes can develop into dendritic cells (DCs) that migrate to lymph nodes (LNs) and present antigens to T cells. However, we find that this differentiation is blocked when monocytes accumulate subcutaneously in response to bacteria or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The inhibition of DC differentiation is mediated by the bacteria and in conjunction with inflammatory cells recruited at the site of injection. Inhibition of migratory DC development was reversed in Toll-like receptor (TLR)4-mutated mice when LPS, but not whole bacteria, was injected, suggesting that TLR4 is one but not the only mediator of the inhibition. Dengue virus is a single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus that productively infects human dendritic cells (DCs) primarily at the immature stage of their differentiation. We now find that all four serotypes of dengue use DC-SIGN (CD209), a C-type lectin, to infect dendritic cells. THP-1 cells become susceptible to dengue infection after transfection of DC-specific ICAM-3 grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN), or its homologue L-SIGN, whereas the infection of dendritic cells is blocked by anti-DC-SIGN antibodies and not by antibodies to other molecules on these cells. Viruses produced by dendritic cells are infectious for DC-SIGN- and L-SIGN-bearing THP-1 cells and other permissive cell lines. …

Potassium ion channels are ubiquitously expressed from bacteria to mammals where they are involved in various processes ranging from the regulation of osmotic pressure in a single cell to the electrical response in muscle fibers to the generation of action potentials in neurons. The BK channel family (BK for Big K⁺ conductance) is an interesting subfamily of K⁺ channels responsive to both membrane voltage and intracellular calcium ion. Rifl, the ortholog of the yeast Rapl interacting factor 1, a telomere length regulator was identified. Immunofluorescence did not reveal an association of human Rifl with telomeres. Preliminary co-immunoprecipitation with known telomeric proteins and chromatin immunoprecipitation failed to show an interaction of human Rifl with telomeric protein complexes or with telomeric DNA. Unexpectedly, Rifl responded to ionizing radiation (IR), UV light, and clastogens, forming foci that co-localized with other DNA damage response factors such as 53BP1, ATM, BRCA1, Chkl, Nbsl, and Rad 17. Furthermore, Rifl localized to uncapped telomeres, as do other DNA damage response factors. Among DNA damage response …

Estrogen fulfills a variety of physiological roles through its nuclear receptors, estrogen receptors (ERs). The action of ERs is modulated and mediated by diverse interacting cofactors. The initial aim of this thesis work was to identify ligand-, subtype- and/or cell typespecific ER-interacting proteins. I identified a number of nuclear extract-derived proteins that interact with immobilized ER ligand binding domains (LBDs) in a 17β-estradiol (E₂)-dependent manner. The most prominent of these are components of the thyroid hormone receptor associated protein (TRAP)/Mediator coactivator complex, which interacts with ERα and ERβ both in unfractionated nuclear extracts and in purified form equally efficiently. Incorporation of chemical probes into proteins is a powerful way to elucidate biological processes and to engineer novel function. This thesis describes the ligation of synthetic molecules to target proteins in an intracellular environment, and the use of semi-synthetic proteins for whole animal studies. In the first approach a cellular protein is genetically tagged with one half of a split-intein. The complementary half is linked in vitro to the synthetic probe and this fusion is delivered into cells using a transduction peptide. Association of the intein halves in the cytosol triggers protein transsplicing, resulting in the ligation of the probe …

The implementation of a recent comprehensive school reform effort in the state of Texas bas been examined in this article. The effort, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), was studied in-depth over the two-year implementation period through school visits, observations, stakeholder interviews, and student performance data analysis. Main findings revealed that through proper implementation (strong instructional leadership, using AVID strategies school-wide, and staff development), underachieving, economically disadvantaged, ethnic minority students can succeed in a rigorous curriculum. Drug abuse and addiction, and the government's response to these problems, are frequently and appropriately a topic for public debate. Law enforcement has made significant advances in both reducing the number of people using illegal drugs and in the fight against traffickers. Legalization of illegal drugs would not elinate the black market or eliminate drug-related violence. The facts on the issue make a strong case for a national policy geared toward effective drug abuse education and prevention, and treatment for people dependent on illegal drugs. Proceeding from the proposition that privacy is a fundamental right, this essay notes the importance of maintaining medical records privacy in light of the increased use of technology. It describes the Privacy Rule promulgated under HIPAA, which was intended to strengthen medical records privacy, but notes the restriction of privacy rights following September 11, 2001 ("9/11"). In light of circumscribed privacy rights, the Privacy Rules becomes much more important in protecting medical records privacy. Unfortunately, the Rule falls short of this goal by potentially running afoul of the First and Fourth Amendments. It also fails to provide adequate medical records …
