The Ethical Responsibilities Of Estate Planning Attorneys In The Representation Of Non-Traditional Couples, Jennifer Tulin Mcgrath
Seattle University Law Review
This Article examines an estate planning attorney's ethical responsibilities when representing one type of non-traditional family: a non-traditional couple. Currently, there are four recognized ethical theories regarding the legal representation of individuals: individual representation; joint representation; intermediary representation; and family representation. This Article explores each of these ethical theories in connection with the representation of traditional couples. These ethical theories are then applied to the representation of nontraditional couples. Although any one of these ethical models may be utilized, this Article concludes that a modified version of family representation provides the estate planning attorney with the most appropriate ethical standard …

A time delay may be defined as the time interval between the start of an event at one point in a system and its resulting action at another point in the system. Delays are also known as transport lags or dead times; they arise in physical, chemical, biological and economic systems, as well as in the process of measurement and computation. Although Uganda has been widely recognized for lowering HIV incidence, the number of orphaned children is still rising. By the end of 2001, there were 880,000 children under age 15 living in Uganda who had lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS and many more vulnerable children whose parents are alive but living with HIV infection. Few programs exist to help families before a parent’s death, and there is little research on the effectiveness of existing programs for AIDS-affected children. Our laboratory has been studying the effects of all-trans retinoic acid (atRA) on the growth and differentiation of the B16 mouse melanoma cells. RA inhibits both anchorage-dependent and –independent growth and stimulates melanin production in B16 cells, which are accompanied by an increase in AP-1 activity. To further investigate the RA-induced AP-1 activity, I established clones of B16 stably expressing an AP-1-luciferase reporter gene. Treatment of these clones with phorbol dibutyrate (PDB), a known activator of AP-1, rapidly increased AP-1 activity which reached its maximum level at 2-4 h and returned to baseline level by 24 h. The library and information science literature is overflowing with how-to articles, particularly how to manage the library. Increasingly, library managers find that the time they have available to peruse such literature lessens as other professional demands intrude. With this trend in mind, members of the Comparative Library Organization Committee (CLOC), a LAMA/LOMS standing committee, decided that a list of required readings is in order. Not just another bibliography, the selection of titles was developed using citation analysis, or bibliometrics, to select highly cited authors and titles for works published outside of the professional library literature, and for works published within …

A Woman's Climb Up The Law School Ladder, Autumn Mesa
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the challenges women face in law school, arguing that the hierarchical and male-dominated structure of legal education creates significant barriers for female students. It contends that women are disproportionately affected by the competitive and often hostile environment, which can lead to feelings of alienation, lower self-esteem, and a struggle to maintain their unique perspectives. The author advocates for systemic change in legal academia to create a more inclusive environment that values diversity and supports female success.

Several 5-(isomeric pyridyl)-4-aryl-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol/yl-thiomethyl/yl-thioethyl/yl-thiobenzyl and yl-thioglycolic acids were prepared as possible biologically active agents. This article examines shifts in international law regarding the use of force -- the jus ad bellum -- that emerged in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and subsequently were invoked in part by the United States and United Kingdom to justify military intervention in Iraq. These shifts import some elasticity -- in time, space, and place -- into the preexisting legal understanding of self-defense. To be sure, the general consensus that supported the use of force in Afghanistan as a legitimate exercise of self-defense has diluted as the use of that force expanded into other theaters …

In The Zone: Why The United States Should Sign The Protocol To The Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone, Erik A. Corneillier

U.S. officials are moving away from supporting international law as a mechanism for preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. For example, the Bush Administration recently refused to sign the Protocol to the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone ("SEANWFZ"). U.S. officials, relying on a policy of nuclear deterrence, maintain that this treaty unnecessarily limits freedom of navigation, creates the possibility of territorial disputes, and accords overly broad negative security assurances to the region. This Comment argues that these concerns are unfounded, and that signing the Protocol would promote U.S. and world security. Successful implementation of SEANWFZ, which requires support from …

The purpose of this paper is to refute Ms. Sarah Lively's article, the ABCs and NTBS of GMOs, detailing the reasons why the E.U. legislation is not in harmony with the WTO agreements. This paper will argue that if a WTO dispute settlement body were to decide upon the validity of the current European GMO regime, it would strike down the regulation as contrary to the WTO agreements signed by the European Union and the United States. The European Union's four year moratorium on GMOs continues to be one of the most hotly-contested trade issues facing it and the United …
