The purpose of this project was to develop a comprehensive plan for managing a crisis at Ephrata High School, Ephrata, Washington. To achieve this purpose, current research, literature, and other selected sources were reviewed. Additionally, specific plans, information, and forms were adapted and developed to serve Ephrata High School and the Ephrata community.

The purpose of this project was to design a thematic unit, using a central theme of gardening, for first grade teachers. This project is in alignment with the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements. The lesson plans were developed after conducting a literature review that shows integrating curriculum can be beneficial for both teachers and students. The activities presented in this project have been implemented, thus enhancing the author's curriculum.

The characteristics and principles of a democratic classroom was investigated; a description of related theories is provided, including those of John Dewey and Paulo Freire. A handbook of activities was created to provide a resource for teachers who desire to create a more democratic classroom. The handbook includes questionnaires, assignments and activities, information about class meetings and ways to explore personality types, among other things.

Linking Landscape And Water Quality In The Mississippi River Basin For 200 Years, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy N. Rabalais

Two centuries of land use in the Mississippi River watershed are reflected in the water quality of its streams and in the continental shelf ecosystem receiving its discharge. The most recent influence on nutrient loading-intense and widespread farming and especially fertilizer use-has had a more significant effect on water quality than has land drainage or the conversion of native vegetation to cropland and grazing pastures. The 200-year record of nutrient loading to offshore water is reflected in the paleoreconstructed record of plankton in dated sediments. Predicting The Response Of Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxia To Variations In Mississippi River Nitrogen Load, D Scavia, N N. Rabalais, R. Eugene Turner, D Justic, D Scavia

The effects of nutrient loading from the Mississippi River basin on the areal extent of hypoxia in the northern Gulf of Mexico were examined using a novel application of a dissolved oxygen model for a river. The model, driven by river nitrogen load and a simple parameterization of ocean dynamics, reproduced 17 yr of observed hypoxia location and extent, subpycnocline oxygen consumption, and cross-pycnocline oxygen flux. With Monte Carlo analysis, we illustrate through hindcasts back to 1968 that extensive regions of low oxygen were not common before the mid-1970s. Dna Sequence Of Melanocortin 1-Receptor Gene In Coturnix Japonica: Correlation With Three E Locus Alleles, E, E+, Erh, Rupali B. Ugrankar

The melanocortin 1-receptor (MC1-R) gene plays a key role in the expression of fur and feather color in mammals and birds by regulating the distribution of two melanin pigments: eumelanin (black/brown) and pheomelanin (red/yellow). MC1-R corresponds to the classical Extension (E) locus in mice, pigs, dogs, horses, and chickens. Three E locus alleles, the wild-type (e + ), brown (E), and redhead (e rh) have been identified in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). To determine if the quail E locus phenotypes were due to variation in the MC1-R gene, the coding region of the MC1-R gene was PCR amplified and DNA …

Cutting Science, Ecology, And Transparency Out Of National Forest Management: How The Bush Administration Uses The Judicial System To Weaken Environmental Laws, William Snape Iii

The focus of this Article is the laws, regulations, and rules that govern the management of national forests. The National Forest System is composed of 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands. These lands cover roughly 8% of the country, 191 million acres in 42 states. They provide a wide range of values and services, including vital wildlife habitats, ecosystem services like clean water and air, irreplaceable recreation opportunities, and timber and nontimber resources.

BACKGROUND: The concept that food is medicine is being practiced in certain parts of the world, with positive outcomes on health of the population. We have such practice in Pakistan but it needs to be brought in line with the available scientific evidence.
METHODS: The study was conducted on 270 patients, visiting the Family Practice Center, the Aga Khan University, Karachi. A questionnaire was used to collect information on the demographic profile, and the use of folk remedies for medicinal uses.

While many wetlands form along floodplains of rivers, streams, lakes, and estuaries, others have developed in depressions far removed from such waters. Depressional wetlands completely surrounded by upland have traditionally been called ‘‘isolated wetlands.’’ Isolated wetlands are not confined to basins, as some occur on broad flats and others form on slopes. The term ‘‘geographically isolated wetlands’’ better describes these wetlands, since many are hydrologically connected to other wetlands and waterbodies through ground-water flows or by intermittent overflows (spillovers). Marianist Award Lectures
Margaret O'Brien Steinfels recounts her story as a woman in a high role in the workplace and the Catholic sphere. She highlights the supposed desire of American Catholics for a women's revolution in many aspects of Catholic life and the Church's response to such stances and voices. Peter Steinfels argues for an emergence and prominence in liberal Catholicism as a heroic stance to take amid the pains of the Church and of the world.
