The Effect Of Graphomotor Exercises And Music On Normal Children And Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Lucy Ellen Heyming Jan 2003

The Effect Of Graphomotor Exercises And Music On Normal Children And Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Lucy Ellen Heyming

Theses Digitization Project

Although drug therapy is the more common treatment of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and has been shown to reduce symptoms, the benefits of the theraputic drugs are temporary, and the therapy can have adverse side effects. For these reasons, many prefer not to use drug therapy for ADHD. Alternative treatments have been shown to have some efficacy, especially when used in conjunction with drug therapy. Dynamic Systems theory suggests that an intervention which combines graphomotor exercises with music may have a positive effect on a child's behavior and attention. A 2 x 2 pretest-posttest design tested the hypothesis that …

Inadequate Substance Abuse Assessment As A Contributory Factor To Child Abuse And Neglect, Gary Eugene Graves Jan 2003

Inadequate Substance Abuse Assessment As A Contributory Factor To Child Abuse And Neglect, Gary Eugene Graves

Theses Digitization Project

This study examined an important, yet underreported, area of family service agency assessments, the failure to adequately screen for substance abuse issues. A self-report screening instrument was used to accurately determine substance abuse frequency rates, instead of using the current clinician-directed questioning. New agency clients were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (self-report) or the control group (clinician-directed) to determine if assessment accuracy improved.

Analysis Of The Developmental Regulation Of The Cyanogenic Compounds In Seedlings Of Two Lines Of Linum Usitatissimum L., M.J. Krech, Mary Ann Fieldes Jan 2003

Analysis Of The Developmental Regulation Of The Cyanogenic Compounds In Seedlings Of Two Lines Of Linum Usitatissimum L., M.J. Krech, Mary Ann Fieldes

Biology Faculty Publications

The developmental profiles and tissue distribution of the four cyanogenic compounds in seedlings of two developmentally contrasting inbred lines of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) were examined using HPLC. During germination, the isoleucine-derived compound, neolinustatin, was hydrolysed faster in the more vigorous of the two lines. Furthermore, in this line, the neolinustatin content was higher in seeds and the accumulation of the other isoleucine-derived compound, lotaustralin, was also higher in the cotyledons of seedlings. In contrast, with one exception, the hydrolysis and accumulation of the valine-derived compounds, linustatin and linamarin, was the same in both lines. Differences in the levels …

Changing The Law, Changing The Culture: Rethinking The "Sleepy Resident" Problem, Jennifer F. Whetsell Jan 2003

Changing The Law, Changing The Culture: Rethinking The "Sleepy Resident" Problem, Jennifer F. Whetsell

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Ms. Whetsell examines the Bell Regulations, which limit New York's hospital residents' work hours and require increased supervision from senior doctors, in light of the currently pending federal bill that seeks to do the same. The article argues that the federal government should draw lessons from the New York experience before proceeding with similar guidelines. The article notes that many roadblocks have prevented successful implementation of the New York policy, including a long-standing tradition of "hazing" first-year residents with long, unsupervised hours; medical community resistance to the notion of residents' sleep deprivation and dislike of government interference; and a general …

Bioterrorism Meets Privacy: An Analysis Of The Model State Emergency Health Powers Act And The Hipaa Privacy Rule, Julie Bruce Jan 2003

Bioterrorism Meets Privacy: An Analysis Of The Model State Emergency Health Powers Act And The Hipaa Privacy Rule, Julie Bruce

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Ms. Bruce's paper analyzes the interplay between the Model State Emergency Health Powers Act and the HIPAA Privacy Rule. The article begins by examining specific relevant provisions of the Act and Rule. Next, it traces the history of public health law through the court system and then uses this foundation to discuss how the Model State Emergency Health Powers Act and the HIPAA Privacy Rule could co-exist, protecting Americans in the case of a bioterror attack, while being appropriately sensitive to the confidentiality of private health information.

Off-Label Or Out Of Bounds? Prescriber And Marketer Liability For Unapproved Uses Of Fda-Approved Drugs, James O'Reilly, Amy Dalal Jan 2003

Off-Label Or Out Of Bounds? Prescriber And Marketer Liability For Unapproved Uses Of Fda-Approved Drugs, James O'Reilly, Amy Dalal

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Professor O'Reilly's study of recent drug review legislation applies a historical and holistic view of promotion practices for unapproved uses of prescription drugs. He faults Congress for moving public health protections away from a strictly protective mode and toward assistance to drug marketers. He argues that the adverse health consequences of "off-label" promotion of drugs are not well understood, and that the 1997 amendments disserved the public health interest while expanding pharmaceutical company profits.

An Introduction To The Philosophy Of Art, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jan 2003

An Introduction To The Philosophy Of Art, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

In this book Richard Eldridge presents a clear and compact survey of philosophical theories of the nature and significance of art. Drawing on materials from classical and contemporary philosophy as well as from literary theory and art criticism, he explores the representational, expressive, and formal dimensions of art, and he argues that works of art present their subject matter in ways that are of enduring cognitive, moral, and social interest. His discussion, illustrated with a wealth of examples, ranges over topics such as beauty, originality, imagination, imitation, the ways in which we respond emotionally to art, and why we argue …

On The Relationship Between Stomatal Characters And Atmospheric Co2, C. D. Reid, H. Maherali, H. B. Johnson, S. D. Smith, S. D. Wullschleger, R. B. Jackson

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Leaf stomatal characters influence the response of terrestrial evapotranspiration to climate change and are used as proxies for the reconstruction of past atmospheric [CO2]. We examined the phenotypic response of stomatal index (SI), density (SD) and aperture (AP) to rising atmospheric CO2 in 15 species after four years exposure to a field CO2 gradient (200 to 550 μmol mol−1 atmospheric [CO2]) or at three Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) sites. Along the CO2 gradient, SI and SD showed no evidence of a decline to increasing [CO2], while AP decreased slightly. There was no significant change in SI, SD or AP …

Social Phobia : Examining The Empirical Shortcomings Of The Most Prevalent Anxiety Disorder, Randall P. Schultz

Graduate Research Papers

Social phobia, which is notably the fear of being negatively evaluated, humiliated, or embarrassed by others in social situations, has become the most prevalent anxiety disorder and the third most diagnosed mental disorder in the nation (Orsillo & Hammond, 2001). Although social phobia is no longer considered to be the "neglected" anxiety disorder (Liebowitz, Gorman, Fyer, & Klein, 1987), it remains an often undertreated, misunderstood, and understudied anxiety disorder (Cuthbert, 2002). The purpose of this paper is to examine the numerous discrepancies and shortcomings within social phobia literature in regards to defining, diagnosing, measuring, and treating social phobia. Recommendations are …
