Making Better Use Of Information: Aiming Towards "True North", Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, William J. Bellows Jan 2003

Making Better Use Of Information: Aiming Towards "True North", Kathryn A.S. Lancaster, William J. Bellows

Accounting

'If I only had the right information, I could make an informed decision'. How often have you heard that comment? With the information technology currently at our disposal, one would think that the right information would be available and that all decisions would be sound. However, users must still determine what data provides valuable information and what are the limitations of the soundness of a decision. What has been missing from most decision models is prediction awareness, as well as a 'true north' compass reading for the organization, based on goals that reflect the system within the organization and that …

Reliability Assessment Of Season-Of-Capture Determination From Archaeological Otoliths, Allen H. Andrews, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Terry L. Jones Jan 2003

Reliability Assessment Of Season-Of-Capture Determination From Archaeological Otoliths, Allen H. Andrews, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

A technique involving microscopic examination of otolith growth zones has been commonly used by archaeologists along the coast of California to estimate season-of-capture of prehistoric fishes and to infer the season of site use. A test of otolith edge analysis techniques was performed on modern otoliths by estimating season-of-capture for otoliths with known dates of capture. Successful identification of season-of-capture was low, even in a best case scenario with the age-validated spotted sand bass (Paralabrax maculatofasciatus), emphasizing the subjectivity of this kind of analysis and inherent variability of growth zone formation in otoliths. Alteration of the otolith matrix …

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Salt marshes in Northeastern Florida were sampled from June 2 to September 10, 2000. A 1m2 throw trap was used to sample different areas of the marsh and fish assemblages were quantified based on tidal stage and the presence of emergent vegetation. One hundred - eight samples were taken during the different tidal stages of which 64 samples contained emergent vegetation. An average of 14.8 nekton, of which 5.5 were fish species, were obtained per sample effort. Certain species exhibited preferences to habitats based on the inclusion of vegetation while others were more frequently encountered in the absence of vegetation. …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

A combined tracer and time-lapse radar imaging experiment was conducted in the unconfined coarse fluvial aquifer at the Boise Hydrogeophysical Research Site in August, 2001. Two tracers (bromide and uranine) were injected to form a plume over a 4-m interval that spanned the contact between hydrostratigraphic units with contrasting permeability. The tracer plume traveled 6.9 m to well B6, passing through well A1 instrumented with 20 sampling zones over a 5-m interval that spanned the injection interval. Radar tomographic data were collected periodically on cross-sectional and longitudinal planes, two of which passed through well A1 for quantitative calibration of radar …

The 75,550-acre Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness comprises the heart of the CCNCA, with another 5,200 acres stretching into Utah.

The CCNCA was given a high priority for land health assessment, a valuable tool in developing the CCNCA Resource Management Plan (RMP).

Double Victims: Fictional Representatives Of Women In The Holocaust, Shauna Copeland Jan 2003

Double Victims: Fictional Representatives Of Women In The Holocaust, Shauna Copeland

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Traditional Holocaust studies have largely overlooked women's unique voices, instead treating the eloquent and moving narratives of such renowned authors as Elie Wiesel and Tadeusz Borowski as definitive sources on "the" Holocaust experience. Recently, scholars have addressed the absence of women's voices in Holocaust studies, arguing that women's experiences, and their reactions to those experiences, were in fact very different from those of men. This topic is a controversial one, and some scholars argue that women's suffering should not be focused upon in the context of an event that sentenced all Jews to death. With such controversy surrounding this issue, …

Mothering, Crime And Incarceration, Kathleen J. Ferraro, Angela M. Moe Jan 2003

Mothering, Crime And Incarceration, Kathleen J. Ferraro, Angela M. Moe

Sociology Faculty Publications

This article examines the relationships between mothering, crime, and incarceration through the narratives of thirty women incarcerated in a southwestern county jail. The responsibilities of child care, combined with the burdens of economic marginality and domestic violence, led some women to choose economic crimes or drug dealing as an alternative to hunger and homelessness. Other women, arrested for drug- or alcohol-related crimes, related their offenses to the psychological pain and despair resulting from loss of custody of their children. Many women were incarcerated for minor probation violations that often related to the conflict between work, child care, and probation requirements. …

Kuhn's Paradigm As A Parable For The Cold War: Incommensurability And Its Discontents From Fuller's Tale Of Harvard To Fleck's Unsung Lvov, Babette Babich Jan 2003

Kuhn's Paradigm As A Parable For The Cold War: Incommensurability And Its Discontents From Fuller's Tale Of Harvard To Fleck's Unsung Lvov, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

In a journal issue dedicated to a discussion of Steve Fuller's Thomas Kuhn: A Philosophical History for Our Times, I argue that Kuhn’s limited acknowledgment of Fleck’s influence on his The Structure of Scientific Revolutions was due to a foundational incommensurability between the standard conceptual framework for philosophical studies of science and Fleck’s historico-social and praxis-oriented approach to scientific progress. The incommensurability in question constituted an insurmountable tension between the kind of language and thinking manifest in Fleck’s study and the conceptual language evident in Kuhn and characteristic of one might still call the received view’ in philosophy of science. …

A Reinterpretation Of The Small Captorhinid Reptile Captorhinikos Parvus Olson As A New Genus, Reanalysis Of Its Cranial Anatomy, And A Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Basal Reptilian Family Captorhinidae, Gavan Mcbride Albright Jan 2003

A Reinterpretation Of The Small Captorhinid Reptile Captorhinikos Parvus Olson As A New Genus, Reanalysis Of Its Cranial Anatomy, And A Phylogenetic Analysis Of The Basal Reptilian Family Captorhinidae, Gavan Mcbride Albright

Theses Digitization Project

The cranial anatomy of the basal captorhinid reptile Captorhinikos parvus (Reptilia, Captorhinidae), is reinterpreted here based on analysis of a group of new specimens recovered subsequent to its original diagnosis as well as further analysis of the original specimens utilized in E.C. Olson's original characterization of the species. Structural features inconsistent with the generic description suggest the redefinition of C. parvus as a new genus, Rhodotheratus parvus. Analyses of basal members and selected derived members support the characterization of Rhodotheratus as a distinct taxon.
