Seasonal Prevalence Of Mosquitoes Collected From Light Traps In Korea (1999-2000), Kim Heung Chul, Kwan Woo Lee, Robert S. Richards, Sonya S. Schleich, William E. Herman, Terry A. Klein Jan 2003

Seasonal Prevalence Of Mosquitoes Collected From Light Traps In Korea (1999-2000), Kim Heung Chul, Kwan Woo Lee, Robert S. Richards, Sonya S. Schleich, William E. Herman, Terry A. Klein

United States Army: Publications

The Entomology Section, 5th Medical Detachment (MED DET) (Preventive Medicine) (PM), in coordination with the Department of Public Works (DPW), 8th US Army-Engineers, conducted annual mosquito surveillance programs at US military installations in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in accordance with Army Regulation (AR) 40-5 (Department of the Army, 1990). Mosquito populations and species distributions throughout the ROK, especially vector species, is of primary importance to US and ROK militaries since each expends substantial amounts of manpower and pesticides for mosquito control to reduce potential health risks to military personnel. Currently, the primary mosquito-borne disease of greatest concern in the …

Wto Compassion Or Superiority Complex?: What To Make Of The Wto Waiver For "Conflict Diamonds", Joost Pauwelyn Jan 2003

Wto Compassion Or Superiority Complex?: What To Make Of The Wto Waiver For "Conflict Diamonds", Joost Pauwelyn

Michigan Journal of International Law

In May 2003, the WTO granted a waiver for trade restrictions imposed on WTO members not participating in the Kimberley Certification Scheme combating so-called "conflict diamonds." This Article examines the implications of this waiver decision. It argues that GATT/TBT provisions may already excuse the trade restrictions at issue, especially now that the UN Security Council has explicitly supported them. The waiver, therefore, risks sending out the wrong signals, confirming a WTO "superiority complex." At the same time, by excluding restrictions between Kimberley participants from its scope, the waiver implies that WTO members considered the Kimberley scheme to be a non-WTO …

The Process And Perspective Of The Therapist In The Treatment Of Self-Mutilation, Megan M. Parketon Jan 2003

The Process And Perspective Of The Therapist In The Treatment Of Self-Mutilation, Megan M. Parketon

Graduate Research Papers

Research for the past 35 years has involved inpatient mentally ill persons who have been institutionalized. Treatment for self-mutilation has also focused primarily on mentally ill and mentally retarded patients. There has been little research done on the specific topic of adolescent female self-mutilation. Self-mutilation has become increasingly prevalent among female adolescents.

In this paper the therapist's perspective of treatment and the therapist's process of treatment were researched. Treatment should be tailored to the specific needs of the adolescent and often involved multiple treatments. Eleven styles of treatment were addressed and the qualities that a therapist needs to possess were …

Spatio-Temporal Patterns Of Campylobacter Contamination In Freshwaters: Results From The Taieri And Motueka Catchments, Rebekah Eyles, George L. Benwell, Dev Niyogi, Colin Townsend, Phil Weinstein Jan 2003

Spatio-Temporal Patterns Of Campylobacter Contamination In Freshwaters: Results From The Taieri And Motueka Catchments, Rebekah Eyles, George L. Benwell, Dev Niyogi, Colin Townsend, Phil Weinstein

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

New Zealand has a history of rapid ecosystem change since the arrival of humans, resulting in a predominantly agricultural landscape. Non-point source pollution from pastoral land use causes microbial contamination of freshwaters and compromises their suitability for contact recreation. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of campylobacteriosis in the developed world (334 cases per 100, 000 people), yet only a few surveys for Campylobacter in freshwaters have been carried out. This study investigates the influence of land use and other environmental variables on spatio-temporal variation in Campylobacter concentrations in two distinct river catchments (the Taieri and Motueka) of …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Advantages and disadvantages of various annual forages, results of dryland and irrigated forage trials, tips for achieving quality forage, and issues related to animal health and feeding forages. Annual forages have value as pasture, green chop, silage, and hay. With adequate soil moisture, these forages grow very rapidly during their appropriate growing seasons.

Extreme Water Velocities: Topographical Amplification Of Wave-Induced Flow In The Surf Zone Of Rocky Shores, Mark Denny, Luke Miller, M. Stokes, L. J. H. Hunt, B. S. T. Helmuth Jan 2003

Extreme Water Velocities: Topographical Amplification Of Wave-Induced Flow In The Surf Zone Of Rocky Shores, Mark Denny, Luke Miller, M. Stokes, L. J. H. Hunt, B. S. T. Helmuth

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Water velocities as high as 25 m s-1 have been recorded in the surf zone of wave-swept rocky shores-velocities more than twice the phase speed of the breaking waves with which they are associated. How can water travel twice as fast as the waveform that initially induces its velocity? We explore the possibility that the interaction of a wave with the local topography of the shore can greatly amplify the water velocities imposed on intertidal plants and animals. Experiments in a laboratory wave tank show that interactions between bores refracted by a prowlike beach can produce jets in which the …

Unbundling Marriage, James Herbie Difonzo Jan 2003

Unbundling Marriage, James Herbie Difonzo

Hofstra Law Review

Marriage is emerging as a “bundle” of legal benefits and burdens. The history of domestic relations has produced a cornucopia of family arrangements, and the yield shows no signs of diminishing. At the same time, our yearning for a halcyon past has led many to the erroneous belief that the family formation consisting of two parents and the children of their ‘til-death-do-they-part union is the only culturally authentic and “traditional” one. In fact, as Michael Grossberg has observed, our domestic past has been characterized by “the constant reality of American family diversity.” As twenty-first century families are exploring new contours, …

University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton Jan 2003

University Technology Transfer And Economic Development: Proposed Cooperative Economic Development Agreements Under The Bayh Dole Act, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

Technology transfer enables private industry and academia to make practical use of advanced research, development, and technical expertise. Indeed, universities are a rich source of science and technology that can support local government and business development as well as economic growth. Thus, it is essential for research universities to transfer their wisdom to the public for its use and benefit. Today, universities operate in an economic climate that requires both capital and knowledge; takes advantage of government technology initiatives (namely the Bayh- Dole Act);' and serves as a catalyst for the creation of a large number of new, incubated companies. …

Childhood Depression And Schools, Jeni Barry Jan 2003

Childhood Depression And Schools, Jeni Barry

Graduate Research Papers

Depression in children is a problem that is becoming more prevalent. With children and adolescents under more stress and pressure than ever before, the seriousness of the issues children deal with is also intensifying. Depression in children is a major concern because it can interfere with school and academics, social functioning, and even lead to somatic symptoms. If depression is left untreated it can lead to other mental disorders. An important concern is that children who are depressed are at great risk of suicide. Population studies show that at any one time between 10 and 15 percent of the child …

The Effects Of The Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui On Invertebrates And Ecosystem Processes At Two Scales In The Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico, Karen H. Beard, Anne K. Eschtruth, Kristiina A. Vogt, Daniel J. Vogt, Frederick N. Scatena Jan 2003

The Effects Of The Frog Eleutherodactylus Coqui On Invertebrates And Ecosystem Processes At Two Scales In The Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico, Karen H. Beard, Anne K. Eschtruth, Kristiina A. Vogt, Daniel J. Vogt, Frederick N. Scatena

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Determining the ubiquity of top-down control effects of predators on their prey and ecosystem processes is important for understanding community and ecosystem-level consequences that may result from predator loss. We conducted experiments at two spatial scales to investigate the effects of terrestrial frogs (Eleutherodactylus coqui) on aerial and litter invertebrates, plant growth and herbivory, and litter decomposition. At both scales, frogs reduced aerial invertebrates and leaf herbivory, but had no effect on litter invertebrates. At the smaller scale, frogs increased foliage production rates, measured as the number of new leaves and new leaf area produced, by 80% and decomposition rates …
