'What's Love Got To Do With It?' - 'It's Not Like They're Your Friends For Christ's Sake' : The Complicated Relationship Between Lawyer And Client, Robert J. Condlin Jan 2003

'What's Love Got To Do With It?' - 'It's Not Like They're Your Friends For Christ's Sake' : The Complicated Relationship Between Lawyer And Client, Robert J. Condlin

Faculty Scholarship

Should lawyers love their clients and try to be their friends? Highly regarded legal scholars have defended the “lawyer-as-friend” analogy in the past, although usually on the basis of a more contractual understanding of friendship than the understanding currently in vogue. These past efforts were widely criticized on a variety of grounds, and after a period of debate, support for the analogy appeared to wane. That is until recently, when other scholars, looking at the topic from a more religious perspective, have asserted a refined version of the friendship analogy as the proper model for lawyer-client relations. It is this …

Two "Colored" Women's Conversation About The Relevance Of Feminist Law Journals In The Twenty-First Century, Taunya Lovell Banks, Penelope Andrews Jan 2003

Two "Colored" Women's Conversation About The Relevance Of Feminist Law Journals In The Twenty-First Century, Taunya Lovell Banks, Penelope Andrews

Faculty Scholarship

This is a critique by two non-white law professors in the form of a conversation about the relevance of feminist law journals on their lives and scholarship. We conclude that the impression that feminist scholarship now is accepted in mainstream law reviews may be illusory and thus there is a continuing need for feminist law journals. In the past rather than creating a new type of journal, feminist law journals tend to replicate the traditional law journal model. Only the focus is different. Twenty years later not only do race and sexuality continue to separate us, but increasingly, careerism as …

Graduate Record 2003: Making It, Southwestern Oklahoma State University Jan 2003

Graduate Record 2003: Making It, Southwestern Oklahoma State University

SWOSU Yearbooks

A Chinese proverb says that "the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

For some that step is the beginning of the journey to attaining a college education. The decision to attend college is not an easy one; it is a decision riddled with thoughts of strict budgeting, massive time consumption, and of course dedication. Each person has his or her own reason for taking this step, but most would agree that the advantages of getting a degree tremendously outweigh any burden that the journey might place upon them. The journey begins as first-time students enter Freshmen …

Comparison Of Biodegradable, Plastic And Wodden Imidacloprid-Treated Spheres For Control Of Rhagoletis Mendax (Diptera: Tephritidae) Flies, Jon E. Hamill, Oscar E. Liburd, Steven R. Alm Jan 2003

Comparison Of Biodegradable, Plastic And Wodden Imidacloprid-Treated Spheres For Control Of Rhagoletis Mendax (Diptera: Tephritidae) Flies, Jon E. Hamill, Oscar E. Liburd, Steven R. Alm

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

In experiments comparing biodegradable, plastic and wooden imidacloprid-treated spheres for control of Rhagoletis mendax Curran, the mean number of flies caught on plexiglas panes below each sphere type was not significantly different for the entire season. However, the mean time spent by R. mendax flies alighting on biodegradable imidacloprid-treated spheres was significantly greater (2.6×) than plastic imidacloprid-treated spheres. During 2001, significantly fewer larvae were found in blueberries harvested from bushes that had wooden imidacloprid-treated spheres hung within the canopy compared with bushes where biodegradable and plastic imidacloprid-treated spheres were deployed. There was no significant difference between the number of larvae …

Cloning Of A Salivary Gland Metalloprotease And Characterization Of Gelatinase And Fibrin(Ogen)Lytic Activities In The Saliva Of The Lyme Disease Tick Vector Ixodes Scapularis, Ivo M.B. Francischetti, Thomas N. Mather, José M.C. Ribeiro Jan 2003

Ribeiro

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

The full-length sequence of tick salivary gland cDNA coding for a protein similar to metalloproteases (MP) of the reprolysin family is reported. The Ixodes scapularis MP is a 488 amino acid (aa) protein containing pre- and pro-enzyme domains, the zinc-binding motif HExxHxxGxxH common to metalloproteases, and a cysteine-rich region. In addition, the predicted amino-terminal sequences of I. scapularis MPs were found by Edman degradation of PVDF-transferred SDS/PAGE-separated tick saliva proteins, indicating that these putative enzymes are secreted. Furthermore, saliva has a metal-dependent proteolytic activity towards gelatin, fibrin(ogen), and fibronectin, but not collagen or laminin. Accordingly, I. scapularis saliva has a …

What Are Four-Year-Olds Doing At School?:Reconciling Current Knowledge About Learning In Young Children With Early Educational Pedagogy, Noirin Hayes

Other resources

The title of the thesis is ‘What are four-year-olds doing at school? Reconciling current knowledge about learning in young children with early educational pedagogy.’ The study addresses the question of four-year-olds at school on two levels. On the one hand, the study describes what four-year-olds are doing at school. Using data from the IEA Preprimary Project1 the thesis provides information on parental and teacher expectations for 203 four-year-olds and presents details of the observed behaviour of the children and their teachers in school. Some of this data has been reported elsewhere (Hayes, O’Flaherty and Kernan, 1997). Additional analysis has been …

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner Jan 2003

Content And Meaning In Abstract Animation, Pamela Turner

Kinetic Imaging Publications and Presentations

Talking about the content and meaning of abstract animation, for the practitioner or enthusiast, is like discussing why one eats chocolate or why we stand at the edge of the ocean, experiencing the sensation of the sand being sucked out from under our feet by the pull of the receding wave. Or why listening to a beautiful adagio can create such a stirring response. These experiences stand for themselves and need no explanation.

For the uninitiated, or the viewer who has little to no encounter with abstract animation, however, these moving images can be initially disconcerting and hard to understand. …

An Analysis Of Diversity In Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Cuyahoga And Rocky River Watersheds (Ohio, Usa) Based On The 16s Rrna Gene, Robert A. Krebs, Roxana N. Vlasceanu, Michael J.S. Tevesz Jan 2003

Tevesz

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

The continued loss of freshwater unionid mussel species in the Great Lakes region, and particularly from Lake Erie, raises the question of how much phylogenetic and genetic variation remain in the watershed. The introduction of molecular markers into population biology offers one reproducible technique for assessing this variation. A fragment of the 16S rRNA gene of mitochondrial DNA has previously been used to infer phylogenetic relationships in the family Unionidae. Therefore, we reanalyzed these published molecular data with the addition of 12 species from the Cuyahoga and Rocky rivers in northeast Ohio. Both rivers drain to Lake Erie. The species …

Macrophages Control The Retention And Trafficking Of B Lymphocytes In The Splenic Marginal Zone, Mikael Karlsson, Rodolphe Renè Guinamard, Silvia M. Bolland Jan 2003

Macrophages Control The Retention And Trafficking Of B Lymphocytes In The Splenic Marginal Zone, Mikael Karlsson, Rodolphe Renè Guinamard, Silvia M. Bolland

Publications

The marginal zone of the spleen is a precisely ordered region that contains specialized subsets of B lymphocytes and macrophages. Disruption of the negative signaling inositol phosphatase, SH2-containing inositol-5-phosphatase 1 (SHIP), results in the loss of marginal zone B cells (MZBs) with reorganization of marginal zone macrophages (MZMOs) to the red pulp of the spleen. This primary macrophage defect, as revealed by selectively depleting SHIP in myeloid cells shows that MZMOs are specifically required for the retention of MZBs. The MZMO phenotype was reverted in SHIP/Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) double knockout mice, thus identifying the Btk activating pathway as an …

Activation Of Natural Killer T Cells By Α-Galactosylceramide Rapidly Induces The Full Maturation Of Dendritic Cells In Vivo And Thereby Acts As An Adjuvant For Combined Cd4 And Cd8 T Cell Immunity To A Coadministered Protein, Shinichiro Fujii, Kanako Shimizu, Carol L. Smith Jan 2003

Smith

Publications

The maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) allows these antigen-presenting cells to initiate immunity. We pursued this concept in situ by studying the adjuvant action α-galactosylceramide (αGalCer) in mice. A single i.v. injection of glycolipid induced the full maturation of splenic DCs, beginning within 4 h. Maturation was manifest by marked increases in costimulator and major histocompatibility complex class II expression, interferon (IFN)-γ production, and stimulation of the mixed leukocyte reaction. These changes were not induced directly by αGalCer but required natural killer T (NKT) cells acting independently of the MyD88 adaptor protein. To establish that DC maturation was responsible for …

Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells, Ralph M. Steinman, Daniel Hawiger, Michel C. Nussenzweig Jan 2003

Tolerogenic Dendritic Cells, Ralph M. Steinman, Daniel Hawiger, Michel C. Nussenzweig

Publications

Dendritic cells (DCs) have several functions in innate and adaptive immunity. In addition, there is increasing evidence that DCs in situ induce antigen-specific unresponsiveness or tolerance in central lymphoid organs and in the periphery. In the thymus DCs generate tolerance by deleting self-reactive T cells. In peripheral lymphoid organs DCs also induce tolerance to antigens captured by receptors that mediate efficient uptake of proteins and dying cells. Uptake by these receptors leads to the constitutive presentation of antigens on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II products. In the steady state the targeting of DC antigen capture receptors with …

Dendritic Cells Initiate Immune Control Of Epstein-Barr Virus Transformation Of B Lymphocytes In Vitro, Kara L. Bickham, Kiera Goodman, Casper Paludan Jan 2003

Dendritic Cells Initiate Immune Control Of Epstein-Barr Virus Transformation Of B Lymphocytes In Vitro, Kara L. Bickham, Kiera Goodman, Casper Paludan

Publications

The initiation of cell-mediated immunity to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been analyzed with cells from EBV-seronegative blood donors in culture. The addition of dendritic cells (DCs) is essential to prime naive T cells that recognize EBV-latent antigens in enzyme-linked immunospot assays for interferon γ secretion and eradicate transformed B cells in regression assays. In contrast, DCs are not required to control the outgrowth of EBV-transformed B lymphocytes from seropositive donors. Enriched CD4+ and CD8 + T cells mediate regression of EBV-transformed cells in seronegative and seropositive donors, but the kinetics of T-dependent regression occurs with much greater speed with …

Synergistic Interactions Of Chlorambucil, Dha, And Trail In Jurkat And H460 Human Cancer Cells, Jennifer Ellen Bush-O'Donnell Jan 2003

Synergistic Interactions Of Chlorambucil, Dha, And Trail In Jurkat And H460 Human Cancer Cells, Jennifer Ellen Bush-O'Donnell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Traditional chemotherapeutic drugs are prone to toxicity and may result in secondary cancers. In recent years much attention has been garnered by alternate methods of cancer treatment with fewer side effects, including immunotherapy and administration of ω-3 fatty acids, both of which have been shown to cause apoptosis in cancer cells. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a fatty acid, is a normal component of cell membranes and is safe for systemic administration. The cytokine TRAIL (tumor necrosis factorrelated apoptosis-inducing ligand) is able to induce apoptosis in cancer cells while sparing normal tissue. In this study, the alkylating agent chlorambucil (CLB) was combined …

In the study, county-level Uniform Crime Reports data, US Census data, and Vital Statistics data will be used to analyze community differences in social context and patterns of domestic violence in Cabell County, WV and Lawrence County, OH. At the same time, the local domestic batterer intervention system in Cabell County, WV, will be …

Correlation Between Time To Peak Torque And Peak Torque To Vertical Jump In College Age Athletes, Craig Adam Kowalski Jan 2003

Correlation Between Time To Peak Torque And Peak Torque To Vertical Jump In College Age Athletes, Craig Adam Kowalski

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The vertical jump is an essential part of athletics to gain an advantage over the opponent. Isokinetic testing provides quantitative data to determine power and how fast power or peak torque is achieved. In this study, after 20 NCAA Div. II athletes were measured for three trials of maximal vertical jump, they completed an isokinetic test of knee extension at speeds of 60, 180, and 300°/sec. The results showed a significant correlation (p<0.05) between peak torque at a speed of 300°/sec and vertical jump p<=0.019. As a result of this study it was found that the vertical jump test is a test of muscle power generated by the quadriceps muscle group, and relates to peak torque values documented by isokinetic testing at 300°/sec of knee extension.

The Relationship Of The Transformational Leadership Of The Administrators In America's Middle College High School And Their Feeder Institutions To Selected Indicators Of Effectiveness, Christine M. Michael Jan 2003

The Relationship Of The Transformational Leadership Of The Administrators In America's Middle College High School And Their Feeder Institutions To Selected Indicators Of Effectiveness, Christine M. Michael

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Middle college high schools in America identify potential college students who are at-risk in the traditional high school environment. These students are placed on the college campus to take high school and college classes and receive dual credit for the latter. The program is specifically designed to keep these pupils in high school, graduate them, and send them on to higher education. This investigation focused on the leadership style of the administrators of both the middle college high schools and their traditional feeder high schools and its relationship to four indicators of effectiveness: attendance rate, dropout rate, graduation rate, and …

Analysis Of Impulsive Behaviors Among Prison Inmates Convicted Of Violent Crimes, Inmates Convicted Of Non-Violent Crimes And Undergraduate College Students, Lonnie Kishpaugh Sr. Jan 2003

Analysis Of Impulsive Behaviors Among Prison Inmates Convicted Of Violent Crimes, Inmates Convicted Of Non-Violent Crimes And Undergraduate College Students, Lonnie Kishpaugh Sr.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Sudden explosive episodes of rage and human aggression by individuals occur daily in our society. While impulsive aggressive behavior is included in several established psychological disorders, the etiology of such behavior has been widely debated.

This study tested the hypotheses that prison inmates who have committed violent crimes were no more likely to exhibit impulsive behavior, than like numbers of prison inmates who had committed non-violent crimes, or college students who have no criminal record. Groups of 20 each of the respective populations were randomly administered the Kipnis Impulsiveness Scale in accordance with instructions from the manual.

With an alpha …

Detection Of Forces And Body Load In Standing And Walking In The American Cockroach, J. Adam Noah Jan 2003

Detection Of Forces And Body Load In Standing And Walking In The American Cockroach, J. Adam Noah

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Sense organs in the legs that detect body weight are an important component in the regulation of posture and locomotion. This thesis seeks to gain an understanding of how body weight is detected by sense organs of the legs, and determine how this information influences muscle activities in standing and walking. The first study tested the ability of tibial campaniform sensilla (receptors that monitor forces in the cockroach leg) to encode variations in body load using magnets attached to the thorax. Recordings of sensory activities in freely standing animals showed that proximal tibial sensilla (oriented perpendicular to the leg long …
