Looking Forward, Looking Back, Looking Inward: Lessons From Vital Women Leaders In Old Age, Shelly Marks Valdez Edd

Current social paradigms, based on established theory about the aged, consider old age as a time of drastic decline and deterioration and view the aged as nonproductive takers of society's resources. Far from using the wisdom and resources of the aged population, our society marginalizes old adults and treats them as obsolete. This study looks into the lives of nine women over the age of 65 who have found within themselves the strength, courage and determination to overcome the stereotypes of aging in order to become leaders in their old age. Life stories were obtained through personal interviews. Data from …

Creating An Entrepreneurial Culture At A Startup Engineering Program, Anthony J. Marchese, John L. Schmalzel, John C. Chen, K. Mark Weaver
Teaching Entrepreneurship to Engineering Students
In 1992, the College of Engineering at Rowan University was created as the direct result of a $100 million gift from entrepreneur Henry M. Rowan. Mr. Rowan’s requirements were that the gift be used to create a high-quality, public undergraduate engineering institution and to impact the economic development of southern New Jersey, a region which has historically lagged behind northern New Jersey. Having started with a clean curriculum slate during a period of national change in engineering curricula in response to ABET 2000, we had the opportunity to infuse an entrepreneurial culture into our engineering program from its inception. Specifically, …

Technological Innovation: An Option In The Ms In Technology Program, James R. Gray
Teaching Entrepreneurship to Engineering Students
The Technological Innovation (TI) option of the Masters of Science in Technology program emphasizes the research, development and technical management of the technological innovation process within the technology-based organization. It is structured to aid the industrial and engineering professional that is responsible for the design and development of technical processes and products. This option includes the technical management of innovation processes, research and development, information technologies, and process technologies. Participants in this option come from a wide range of technological disciplines and draw on an extensive array of theoretical and applied knowledge. This paper presents the development and implementation of …

Double-stranded RNA can induce the degradation of homologous RNAs in organisms as diverse as protozoa, animals, plants and fungi, resulting in post-transcriptional gene silencing. But in some species, RNA-mediated processes can also lead to translational repression, DNA methylation, heterochromatin formation or DNA elimination. In some situations, amplification of the “trigger” double-stranded RNA seems to be required for efficient silencing. These findings imply that RNA-mediated mechanisms can control gene expression at both the transcriptional and the post-transcriptional level, and that they can operate in the nuclear and the cytoplasmic compartments.

Utah Law Review
Erik Luna in his contribution to this Symposium has provided us with a critique of mainstream theories of punishment that is without exception. He laments the endless trench warfare between proponents of these different positions and advocates a theoretical synthesis that is procedural.' I agree there is much to be synthesized, and there is particular virtue in synthesizing explanatory and normative theories. But one of the reasons there is virtue in such synthesis is that it enables us to see that some normative theories may be coherent in some possible world, but not in any empirically plausible world. Obversely, explanatory …

Policymakers' Online Use Of Academic Research, John Willinsky
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
In addressing the question of how new technologies can improve the public quality and presence of academic research, this article reports on the current online use of research by policymakers. Interviews with a sample of 25 Canadian policymakers at the federal level were conducted, looking at the specific role that online research has begun to play in their work, and what frustrations they face in using this research.

In recent years there has been growing speculation regarding an increase in the number of African Americans identifying themselves as conservatives. Much of this speculation has been heightened by the increase in the number of African American elites who identify themselves as conservatives. This list includes icons like Clarence Thomas, J.C. Watts, Alan Keyes and Ward Connerly, to name a few. Despite the increase in the number of African American elites who identify themselves as conservatives, there has been a dearth of systematic analyses to determine if this phenomenon has trickled down to the masses.
Models that have traditionally been …

Associations Of A Leptin Gene Polymorphism With Beef Carcass Traits, Chad D. Bierman, Donald M. Marshall, Emilie Campbell, Nels H. Granholm
Associations Of A Leptin Gene Polymorphism With Beef Carcass Traits, Chad D. Bierman, Donald M. Marshall, Emilie Campbell, Nels H. Granholm
South Dakota Beef Report, 2003
The objective was to evaluate associations of leptin genotype with fat and muscle traits in cattle. A single nucleotide polymorphism located in exon 2 of the leptin gene in cattle codes for an amino acid change from arginine (R) to cysteine (C). Genotypes for the polymorphism were determined on 492 crossbred calves by AciI digestion of amplified PCR product (C allele: 130bp; R allele: 73bp and 57bp). Data were analyzed by least-squares, accounting for effects of genotype, sex, year, location, breed-type, and calf sire. Genotype was not significantly associated with carcass weight or ribeye area in any of the analyses. …

Patenting Genome Research Tools And The Law., Rebecca S. Eisenberg
Patenting Genome Research Tools And The Law., Rebecca S. Eisenberg
Articles
Patenting genes encoding therapeutic proteins was relatively uncontroversial in the early days of biotechnology. Controversy arose in the era of high-throughput DNA sequencing, when gene patents started to look less like patents on drugs and more like patents on scientific information. Evolving scientific and business strategies for exploiting genomic information raised concerns that patents might slow subsequent research. The trend towards stricter enforcement of the utility and disclosure requirements by the patent offices should help clarify the current confusion.
Demographic Characteristics Of Adoptees Presenting To The Yale International Adoption Clinic And The Utility Of Pre-Adoption Video Review, Jon L. Boone
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The major purpose of this study was to examine whether the assessment of pre-adoption video (pre-vid) by an experienced pediatrician accurately predicts the post-adoption developmental (post-dev) status of the adoptee on arrival and to examine any difference in the extent of developmental delay between those adoptees with and those without a pre-vid review. As a foundation for the study, an extensive database for all adoptees seen at the Yale International Adoption Clinic was created and their demographic characteristics were analyzed. The developmental status of 20 children from Russian and Eastern European orphanages was assessed by an experienced pediatrician using a …
