Blackwell Publishing Ltd. Chondrocranial, Hyobranchial And Internal Oral Morphology In Larvae Of The Basal Bufonid Genus Melanophryniscus (Amphibia: Anura), Peter M. Larson, Rafael O. De Sá, Diego Arrieta

Biology Faculty Publications

Melanophryniscus is a genus of small toads inhabiting the southern portion of South America. This genus is considered basal within the family Bufonidae. Data on larval chondrocranial morphology do not exist for the genus and larval internal oral anatomy has only been described for a single species. Here, we describe chondrocranial and internal oral morphology in Melanophryniscus montevidensis, M. orejasmirandai and M. sanmartini. Chondrocranial morphology is similar among the species examined. Comparisons with other bufonids and with outgroup taxa suggest that the following chondrocranial characters may represent synapomorphies for the Bufonidae: free (or absent) ceratobranchial IV, a reduced …

Environmental Estrogens Alter Early Development In Xenopus Laevis, Cassandra L. Bevan, Donna M. Porter, Anita Prasad, Marthe J. Howard, Leslie P. Henderson Apr 2003

Environmental Estrogens Alter Early Development In Xenopus Laevis, Cassandra L. Bevan, Donna M. Porter, Anita Prasad, Marthe J. Howard, Leslie P. Henderson

Dartmouth Scholarship

A growing number of environmental toxicants found in pesticides, herbicides, and industrial solvents are believed to have deleterious effects on development by disrupting hormone-sensitive processes. We exposed Xenopus laevis embryos at early gastrula to the commonly encountered environmental estrogens nonylphenol, octylphenol, and methoxychlor, the antiandrogen, p,p-DDE, or the synthetic androgen, 17 alpha-methyltestosterone at concentrations ranging from 10 nM to 10 microM and examined them at tailbud stages (approximately 48 hr of treatment). Exposure to the three environmental estrogens, as well as to the natural estrogen 17 beta-estradiol, increased mortality, induced morphologic deformations, increased apoptosis, and altered the deposition and differentiation …

The Secret History Of Race In The United States, Daniel J. Sharfstein Apr 2003

The Secret History Of Race In The United States, Daniel J. Sharfstein

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

"Spencer v. Looney" was one of dozens of cases decided in the eras of slavery and segregation that hinged on the question of whether a plaintiff or defendant was white or black. During the past decade, legal historians have begun to excavate these bygone disputes, which involved wills, marriage and divorce, transportation, immigration and naturalization, and libel and slander. With few exceptions, two goals have motivated recent scholarship: proving that race is a social construction and showing how courts in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries helped build America's racial infrastructure. This Essay presents a more complex picture of race …

Is The Endangered Species Act Ecopragmatic?, J.B. Ruhl Apr 2003

Is The Endangered Species Act Ecopragmatic?, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The Article evaluates the Endangered Species Act using Dan Farber's theory of eco-pragmatism. Eco-pragmatism employs environmental baselines, a moderated precautionary principle, and adaptive management to mediate environmental policy issues. I conclude that the ESA reflects some of these attributes, but does not coherently assemble a truly eco-pragmatic framework.

Role That Professional Positioning And Professional Socialization Play In The Career Path Of African American Women Superintendents, Cheryl Celestin Apr 2003

Role That Professional Positioning And Professional Socialization Play In The Career Path Of African American Women Superintendents, Cheryl Celestin

Dissertations

This dissertation examines the professional positioning and professional socialization of African American women school superintendents in the Mid-West area of the United States. Numerous studies revealed that there are very few African American women superintendents (Glass, 2000; Alston, 2000; Brunner, 1999; Ortiz, 1998; and Jackson, 1995). Women educators in general and African American women educators more specifically were not placed in professional paths that normally lead to the superintendency (Alston, 2000; Gardiner, Enomoto and Grogan, 2000; and Shakeshaft, 1987). The ladder to the school superintendency had historically included male dominated line positions such as athletic coaching and band directing with …

Student Ecosystems Problem Solving With Computer Simulation, Melissa A. Howse Apr 2003

Student Ecosystems Problem Solving With Computer Simulation, Melissa A. Howse

Dissertations

Computer simulations, such as the BioQUEST Environmental Decision Making (EDM) program, represent a viable supplement or alternative to traditional science teaching approaches. This study concentrated on the manner in which knowledge is acquired and then disseminated through the use of the simulations. In addition, the study took into account the nature of science by revealing what notions of ecosystems and simulation were revealed when students encountered concepts imparted to them via this method. The following research questions guided this study: (1) What content knowledge do students use to solve ecology problems? (2) What procedural knowledge do students use to solve …

Co-Catalytic Metallopeptidases As Pharmaceutical Targets, Richard C. Holz, Krzysztof P. Bzymek, Sabina I. Swierczek Apr 2003

Co-Catalytic Metallopeptidases As Pharmaceutical Targets, Richard C. Holz, Krzysztof P. Bzymek, Sabina I. Swierczek

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Understanding the reaction mechanism of co-catalytic metallopeptidases provides a starting point for the design and synthesis of new molecules that can be screened as potential pharmaceuticals. Many of the enzymes that contain co-catalytic metallo-active sites play important roles in cellular processes such as tissue repair, protein maturation, hormone level regulation, cell-cycle control and protein degradation. Therefore, these enzymes play central roles in several disease states including cancer, HIV, stroke, diabetes, bacterial infections, neurological processes, schizophrenia, seizure disorders, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The mechanism of AAP, an aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica, is one of the best-characterized examples of a metallopeptidase …

Why Bad Things Happen At All: A Search For Clarity Among The Problems Of Evil, John Sutton Welch Apr 2003

Why Bad Things Happen At All: A Search For Clarity Among The Problems Of Evil, John Sutton Welch

BYU Studies

In college I lost my faith—not completely and not for long. But that moment impacted my beliefs deeply. I was standing in the back of the theater watching a scene unfold, waiting for my cue to enter. On the stage, my character's parents, farmers during a war depicted in Bertold Brecht's Mother Courage, realize that the army impressing my character into service is about to descend on their farm and then on the nearby village. Alone and defenseless, they beg God to save them. As I watched this pathetic pair plead for rescue, a though occurred to me that …

The Myth Of Science As A ‘Neutral Arbiter’ For Triggering Precautions, Vern R. Walker Apr 2003

The Myth Of Science As A ‘Neutral Arbiter’ For Triggering Precautions, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This article demonstrates that science cannot be a "neutral arbiter" for triggering precautionary measures, because both making and warranting findings of risk require non-scientific decisions. Making a risk finding requires decisions about the meaning of "risk of harm," about the meaning of any modifiers for that predicate, and about the degree of confidence asserted for the finding as a whole. Determining that the available scientific evidence warrants a finding of risk requires decisions about acceptable degrees of various types of uncertainty namely, conceptual uncertainty, measurement uncertainty, sampling uncertainty, modeling uncertainty, and causal uncertainty. This article illustrates these decisions using examples …

A Representation Scheme For Finite Length Strings, Guarav Tandon, Debasis Mitra Apr 2003

A Representation Scheme For Finite Length Strings, Guarav Tandon, Debasis Mitra

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This study is an attempt to create a canonical representation scheme for finite length strings to simplify the study of the theory behind different classes of patterns and to ease the understanding of the underlying separability issues. This could then be used to determine what kinds of techniques are suitable for what class of separability (linear, multi-linear, or non-linear). This representation can then be used in intrusion detection, biological sequences, pattern recognition/classification and numerous other applications.

Acculturation As A Developmental Pathway, David Lackland Sam, Brit Oppedal Apr 2003

Acculturation As A Developmental Pathway, David Lackland Sam, Brit Oppedal

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This chapter looks at some developmental issues in the acculturation of children and adolescents with immigrant backgrounds. In addition to raising critical questions about this line of research, the chapter examines some underlying assumptions and their implications for the study of acculturation in younger people. It is argued that ambiguities in the final outcome of acculturation and differences in acculturation experiences of adults and children make it necessary to bring developmental perspectives closer into this line of research among children and adolescents in immigrant families. Against this background a modified developmental contextual model is suggested as an alternate perspective to …

Evaluation Of Automated Ribotyping As A Tool For Bacterial Source Tracking In Aquatic Environments, Tracy L. Idocks Apr 2003

Evaluation Of Automated Ribotyping As A Tool For Bacterial Source Tracking In Aquatic Environments, Tracy L. Idocks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An Escherichia coli ribotype profile library was created for the Tampa Bay watershed for application to bacterial source tracking of human or non-human fecal contamination to the bay and surrounding rivers. Bacterial source tracking uses a variety of methods to identify the source of fecal contamination, not just the quantity of the indicator bacteria present, allowing implementation of effective management practices. The 700 confirmed E. coli isolate library was equally distributed among four sources: human, bird, dog and cow. The library was tested for applicability for source tracking within the Tampa Bay watershed. The DuPont Qualicon RiboPrinter® Microbial Characterization System, …

Material Persons, Immaterial Souls And An Ethic Of Life, Kevin Corcoran Apr 2003

Material Persons, Immaterial Souls And An Ethic Of Life, Kevin Corcoran

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Among objections to naturalist views of human persons like Animalism and the Constitution View are two that concern alleged ethical implications. One criticism is that such views are defective because they lack the metaphysical resources to generate moral obligations or moral expectations to protect life, in either its early or late stages. Another objection relies on the claim that any metaphysical view of human persons according to which some human organisms lack the property of personhood has horrendous moral implications. With respect to the first objection I argue that resources metaphysically neutral with respect to dualism and naturalism about persons …

Pace Environmental Law Review

This casenote discusses the statutes and cases bearing on the Second Circuit's decision of Catskill Mountains Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Inc. v. City of New York. It begins with an examination of Catskill to determine its reliability as authority for subsequent cases. Specifically, this casenote discusses the, statutes and cases laying the foundation of the Catskill decision, addressing the law of judicial deference to administrative interpretation, and the meaning of "discharge of pollutants" under the Clean Water Act. This casenote concludes that Catskill is both sound authority and a fair summary of the law at the time of its decision. …

Three lepidopteran cereal stemborers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) were collected from maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. The noctuid stemborers are indigenous to Africa while C. partellus is an introduced species from Asia. In 1999, the Asian stemborer parasitoid, Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Braconidae) was found to be widespread in Ethiopia, even though it had never been released in the country. In addition to attacking Chilo partellus, Cotesia flavipes was reared from B. fusca and S. calamistis. The origin of C. flavipes in Ethiopia may have been Somalia where it was released in 1997 …

An Examination Of Modulation Of Feeding Behavior In The Nurse Shark Ginglymostoma Cirratum (Bonaterre 1788), Michael Matott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The ability of an organism to modulate its feeding behavior is an important focus of feeding ecology studies. Modulation is the ability to distinctly and consistently alter a behavior to accommodate different stimuli. The goal of this study was to examine the ability of the nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum to modulate its food capture behavior with different sizes and types of food items. This was carried out through kinematic and electromyographic analysis.

Eight sub-adult specimens of G. cirratum were filmed feeding on two different food types (squid and fish) and sizes (gape size and larger than gape size). Filming consisted …
