One Hundred Years Of Environmental Pollution At Chattanooga Creek: A Review Of Selected Studies, Connie C. Kennedy Apr 2003

One Hundred Years Of Environmental Pollution At Chattanooga Creek: A Review Of Selected Studies, Connie C. Kennedy

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

When studying local Chattanooga history, one cannot ignore the issues of pollution in the city and the environmental degradation of the Chattanooga Creek. Throughout the past one hundred years, the Chattanooga Creek was subjected to multiple inputs of pollutants, beginning with animal wastes in the early 1900s, coal tar from government operated coke ovens during the WWII era, and large amounts of industrial wastes in the latter part of the century. Today the creek is officially closed to the public but the status of its water and sediments remains dangerously polluted. Several research projects throughout the past two decades have …

A Study Of Female Characteristics And Images In Home Video Games, Carl P. Apple Apr 2003

A Study Of Female Characteristics And Images In Home Video Games, Carl P. Apple

Masters Theses

In the past 30 years, video games have progressed from a technical novelty to a $17 billion industry. However, a majority of players are still male; many blame this on the overwhelming amount of male-oriented images and themes in popular video games. Technological literacy is becoming a prerequisite for employment in many jobs and there is a proven link between interest in video games and increased computer literacy. Studies also show that video games help improve cognitive skills like hand-eye coordination and spatial dexterity. This content analysis examined elements of 63 Sony PlayStation video games, quantifying male and female characters …

Changing Nature: The Myth Of The Inevitability Of Ecosystem Management, Bruce Pardy Apr 2003

Changing Nature: The Myth Of The Inevitability Of Ecosystem Management, Bruce Pardy

Pace Environmental Law Review

In this article, the author argues that ecosystem management is a policy choice masquerading as an inevitability. Ecosystem management is a process that measures, controls and changes ecosystems to produce the most desirable environment in human terms. The article begins with a discussion of two developments from which ecosystem management derives its legitimacy, the theory of nonequilibrium in ecosystems and the extinction of pristine systems: ecosystems exist in a fluid and dynamic state, and there are no ecosystems that are completely unaffected by human impact. Therefore, according to the prevailing view, it is not possible to preserve ecosystems in a …

Infection Of Cattle With A Bovine Herpesvirus 1 Strain That Contains A Mutation In The Latency-Related Gene Leads To Increased Apoptosis In Trigeminal Ganglia During The Transition From Acute Infection To Latency, Luciane Lovato, Melissa Inman, Gail A. Henderson, Alan R. Doster, Clinton J. Jones Apr 2003

Jones

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle and infection is usually initiated via the ocular or nasal cavity. After acute infection, the primary site for BHV-1 latency is sensory neurons in the trigeminal ganglia (TG). Reactivation from latency occurs sporadically, resulting in virus shedding and transmission to uninfected cattle. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latencyrelated (LR) RNA. An LR mutant was constructed by inserting three stop codons near the beginning of the LR RNA. This mutant grows to wild-type (wt) efficiency in bovine kidney cells and in the nasal cavity of acutely …

Gene flow from transgenic crops can introduce novel traits into related species, but the ecological importance of this process is unknown. Here, we report the first empirical evidence that wild plants can benefit from a bacterial transgene under uncaged, natural conditions. Cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is known to hybridize frequently with wild sunflower (H. annuus) in the western and midwestern United States. We studied a crop-developed Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgene, cry1Ac, in backcrossed wild sunflower populations. Lepidopteran damage on transgenic plants was strongly reduced relative to control plants at our two study sites, while damage …

Evolution Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus: Dynamics Of Population Growth Within Plants May Explain Limited Variation, Roy C. French, Drake C. Stenger Apr 2003

Evolution Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus: Dynamics Of Population Growth Within Plants May Explain Limited Variation, Roy C. French, Drake C. Stenger

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Like many other plant RNA viruses, Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) sequence diversity within and among infected plants is low given the large number of virions produced. This may be explained by considering aspects of plant virus life history. Intracellular replication of RNA viruses is predominately linear, not exponential, which means that the rate at which mutations accumulate also is linear. Bottlenecks during systemic movement further limit diversity. Analysis of mixed infections with two WSMV isolates suggests that about four viral genomes participate in systemic invasion of each tiller. Low effective population size increases the role of stochastic processes on …

A Growth Mixture Theory For Cartilage With Application To Growth-Related Experiments On Cartilage Explants, Stephen M. Klisch, Silvia S. Chen, Robert L. Sah, Anne Hoger Apr 2003

A Growth Mixture Theory For Cartilage With Application To Growth-Related Experiments On Cartilage Explants, Stephen M. Klisch, Silvia S. Chen, Robert L. Sah, Anne Hoger

Mechanical Engineering

In this paper, we present a growth mixture model for cartilage. The main features of this model are illustrated in a simple equilibrium boundary-value problem that is chosen to illustrate how a mechanical theory of cartilage growth may be applied to growth-related experiments on cartilage explants. The cartilage growth mixture model describes the independent growth of the proteoglycan and collagen constituents due to volumetric mass deposition, which leads to the remodeling of the composition and the mechanical properties of the solid matrix. The model developed here also describes how the material constants of the collagen constituent depend on a scalar …

The Effects Of Parents' Psychiatric Disorders On Children's High School Dropout, Virginia Wilcox-Gök, Farah Farahati, Dave E. Marcotte Apr 2003

The Effects Of Parents' Psychiatric Disorders On Children's High School Dropout, Virginia Wilcox-Gök, Farah Farahati, Dave E. Marcotte

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Mental illness is known to impose substantial direct costs on the ill. In this paper, we examine an indirect cost of mental illness. We investigate the effect of parents’ mental illnesses on the schooling of their children. Using data from the National Comorbidity Survey, we find that parents’ mental illnesses increase the probability of high school dropout of children, though these effects differ markedly with disease. We also find that parental mental illness has more consistently negative effects on girls than on boys. These findings indicate that parental mental illness can have a powerful impact on children’s schooling and subsequently …

The Spanning Set Indicates That Variability During The Stance Period Of Running Is Affected By Footwear, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou Apr 2003

The Spanning Set Indicates That Variability During The Stance Period Of Running Is Affected By Footwear, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Sensory information the foot receives appears to be related to kinematic variability. Since footwear material densities affect sensory information, footwear may be an important factor that dictates variability. This study hypothesized that modifications in footwear would result in changes in kinematic variability during the running stance period. Subjects ran on a treadmill for three conditions: hard shoe, soft shoe and barefoot. The spanning sets of the mean ensemble curves of the knee and ankle changes for each condition were used to define variability. Variability was significantly larger in the barefoot condition in comparison with the two footwear conditions for both …
