Cell-Cycle Regulatory Proteins In Podocyte Cell In Idiopathic Nephrotic Syndrome Of Childhood., Tarak Srivastava, Robert E. Garola, J M. Whiting, Uri S. Alon

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: The podocyte cell is believed to play an important role in idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) of childhood. In adults with cellular and collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), the expression of cell-cycle regulatory proteins such as p27, p57, and cyclin D is decreased and expression of cyclin A, Ki-67, and p21 is observed in podocyte cells suggestive of a dysregulated podocyte phenotype. We investigated for alterations in the expression of cyclin kinase inhibitors, p27, p57, p21, and cyclins D and A in the podocyte cell of children with INS.

METHODS: Forty-two kidney biopsies were investigated; 14 with minimal-change disease (MCD), …

The War On Terror: Constitutional Governance In A State Of Permanent Warfare, W. Wesley Pue Apr 2003

The War On Terror: Constitutional Governance In A State Of Permanent Warfare, W. Wesley Pue

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article assesses Canada's principal legal responses to the challenge presented by terrorism in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. A review of major federal "anti-terrorism" legislation reveals a legislative response that fundamentally violates core constitutional principles while failing to significantly enhance public safety.

No Exit: Racial Profiling And Canada's War Against Terrorism, Reem Bahdi Apr 2003

No Exit: Racial Profiling And Canada's War Against Terrorism, Reem Bahdi

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

After September 11, 2001, some scholars and policy-makers promoted the racial profiling of Arabs and Muslims as a means towards greater national security. While racial profiling has not been officially sanctioned in Canada, it attracts popular support and undeniably takes place. The first part of this article identifies three different categories of racial profiling in the context of Canada's War against Terrorism. The second part identifies the problems associated with racial profiling. It argues that racial profiling undermines national security while also heightening the vulnerability and exclusion of Arabs, Muslims, and other racialized groups in Canada.

Expression Of Glutathione-S-Transferase Mu 1 (Gstm1) And Glutathione-S-Transferase Theta 1 (Gstt1) In Patients With Aplastic Anemia And Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Aaron Conrad Spivey Apr 2003

Expression Of Glutathione-S-Transferase Mu 1 (Gstm1) And Glutathione-S-Transferase Theta 1 (Gstt1) In Patients With Aplastic Anemia And Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Aaron Conrad Spivey

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Aplastic Anemia is a disorder of the hematopoietic bone marrow stem cells that is frequently associated with drug or chemical exposures. Reduced ability to detoxify drugs or chemicals may result in an increased risk of disease. Glutathione S-transferases are Phase II enzymes, which help detoxify xenobiotics. Many patients who have developed aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome have the null genotype for GSTMI and/or GSTTI. For patients with GSTMI and GSTTI positive genotypes, non-expression of these enzymes may cause an increased risk in developing aplastic anemia or myelodysplastic syndrome. To test whether genotype positive patients have GSTMI or GSTTI null …

Science Comprehension: Effects Of Text Coherence And Reader Aptitudes, Kimberly G. Cottrell Apr 2003

Science Comprehension: Effects Of Text Coherence And Reader Aptitudes, Kimberly G. Cottrell

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

There is a significant need to improve reading comprehension as typical textbooks, particularly science textbooks, are often too difficult for the average student to comprehend. The overall purpose of this study was to examine which reader aptitudes, specifically prior domain knowledge, reading ability, metacognitive reading strategy knowledge, and motivation, were most predictive of science text comprehension, and whether these relationships varied as a function of text coherence. Further, the purpose entailed which factors (reading ability, metacognitive reading strategy knowledge, and motivation) may assist low knowledge readers to compensate for knowledge deficits, particularly when reading low-coherence texts. There were 241 undergraduate …

Clermont, Iowa: The Moon, Kyle Kuhn Apr 2003

Clermont, Iowa: The Moon, Kyle Kuhn

English Theses & Dissertations

Although Clermont, Iowa is not defined in concrete terms, the stories give dimension to the town and make the reader feel as if he or she is a part of the community, overhearing a story at the grocery store or at the bowling alley. The stories work together to show the contradictions of rural life, the caring community that exists alongside the deceit and lies that drive many of its members.

Clustering Of The Endoplasmic Reticulum In Aluminum Induced Apoptosis, Adam Nathan Hertlein Apr 2003

Clustering Of The Endoplasmic Reticulum In Aluminum Induced Apoptosis, Adam Nathan Hertlein

Senior Honors Theses

Disruption of the cytoskeleton and axonal transport has been implicated in certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. It is not clear whether cytoskeletal and transport abnormalities playa causative role in neurodegeneration or whether they are simply byproducts of disrupted metabolism and signal transduction pathways in neurons undergoing apoptosis. Aluminum has been used to induce apoptosis in both in vivo and in vitro models of apoptosis that share many biochemical and pathological similarities to Alzheimer's disease. The specific aim of this project was to examine the effect that aluminum-induced apoptosis has on intracellular distribution of the endoplasmic reticulum. The results …

The Implications Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorder In The Classroom, Stephanie Barber Apr 2003

The Implications Of Emotional/Behavioral Disorder In The Classroom, Stephanie Barber

Senior Honors Theses

Strategies of classroom intervention for emotional/behavioral disordered (EBD) children were investigated. The definition of EBD is provided, in addition to background information concerning EBD, including manifestation of EBD, possible causes, racial and gender trends, and current levels of education achieved by EBD students. Through a review of literature, a number of intervention strategies were found to be effective, including behavior management systems, social skills instruction, modification of instruction and instructional materials, peer support, self-evaluation, and increased opportunity to respond. The collaborated information is intended to be used by educators in order to increase the EBD student's chance for academic success.

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar 2003: Invasive Species, Kyle Hegamyer, Byron Deluke, Allyson Ladley, Lucas Nagy, Brian Webb, Steve Nash, Matthew Rose

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

The class of 2003 was the first to graduate with Environmental Studies degrees from the University of Richmond. At that time, the Senior Seminar was a two-semester class, ENVR 391 and 392. It was taught by a pair of professors; Stephen P. Nash, Journalism, and Peter D. Smallwood, Biology. Students chose the problem of invasive species for their focus. With tremendous help from the staff of the Virginia chapter of The Nature Conservancy, and from Delegate James Dillard, the students proposed legislation to help Virginia deal with this environmental problem. Students wrote opinion pieces for local papers throughout Virginia in …

Serologic Survey For Diseases In Free-Ranging Coyotes (Canis Latrans) From Two Ecologically Distinct Areas Of Utah, Wendy M. Arjo, Eric M. Gese, Cassity Bromley, Adam Kozlowski, Elizabeth S. Williams Apr 2003

Serologic Survey For Diseases In Free-Ranging Coyotes (Canis Latrans) From Two Ecologically Distinct Areas Of Utah, Wendy M. Arjo, Eric M. Gese, Cassity Bromley, Adam Kozlowski, Elizabeth S. Williams

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The influence of habitat and associated prey assemblages on the prevalence of canine diseases in coyotes (Canis latrans) has received scant attention. From December 1997 through December 1999, we captured 67 coyotes in two ecologically distinct areas of Utah (USA): Deseret Land and Livestock Ranch and US Army Dugway Proving Ground. These areas differ in habitat and prey base. We collected blood samples and tested for evidence of various canine diseases. Prevalence of antibodies against canine parvovirus (CPV) was 100% in the Deseret population and 93% in the Dugway population. All juveniles in both populations had been exposed. …

Research At Us Colleges Of Osteopathic Medicine: A Decade Of Growth, V. James Guillory, Glynda F. Sharp Apr 2003

Research At Us Colleges Of Osteopathic Medicine: A Decade Of Growth, V. James Guillory, Glynda F. Sharp

Faculty and Staff Publications

Although research is a critical component of academic medicine, it has not been a significant component of osteopathic medicine. For years, leaders in the osteopathic medical profession have called for increased research in osteopathic medical schools. The need for cost-effective clinical practice leading to improved clinical outcomes creates a necessity for conducting well-designed clinical outcomes research related to osteopathic practice. The authors assess the growth in research at osteopathic academic medical centers from 1989-1999. The amounts of extramural funding at each school, sources of funding, types of research funded, departments funded, and investigators' degree types are also assessed. During the …

Us-Japan Relations : Convergence And Divergence In The Post-September 11th World, Brian Bridges Apr 2003

Us-Japan Relations : Convergence And Divergence In The Post-September 11th World, Brian Bridges

CAPS Working Paper Series

Japan-US relations, which had been drifting in the late 1990s, were given a new lease of life by the new administrations of US President George W. Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro, both of whom argued for strengthening the alliance. This paper argues that, although the new sense of cooperation extended through to beyond the September 11th events, the US designation of an ‘axis of evil’ has paradoxically caused some divergence in the relationship. Japanese policies towards all three constituents countries of the ‘axis of evil’, Iraq, North Korea and Iran, differ in emphasis and nature from those of …

Canadian East Coast Offshore Oil And Gas Industry: Sustainable Development Through Cooperative Federalism, Keith R. Evans Apr 2003

Canadian East Coast Offshore Oil And Gas Industry: Sustainable Development Through Cooperative Federalism, Keith R. Evans

Dalhousie Law Journal

For many years, development of the oil and gas potential off the east coast of Canada was delayed while the jurisdictional issues in respect of the area were resolved. While the provinces lost the major court battles on jurisdiction, political pressures combined with practical aspects of provincial involvement in the land bases for operations in the offshore area have resulted in pragmatic cooperation between the two levels of government and the establishment of joint administrative Boards to oversee exploration and development in the area. This paper explores the background to and the mechanics used for this pragmatic constitutional resolution and, …

Application Of Speech Recognition To African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Vocalizations, Patrick J. Clemins, Michael T. Johnson Apr 2003

Application Of Speech Recognition To African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Vocalizations, Patrick J. Clemins, Michael T. Johnson

Dr. Dolittle Project: A Framework for Classification and Understanding of Animal Vocalizations

This paper presents a novel application of speech processing research, classification of African elephant vocalizations. Speaker identification and call classification experiments are performed on data collected from captive African elephants in a naturalistic environment. The features used for classification are 12 mel-frequency cepstral coefficients plus log energy computed using a shifted filter bank to emphasize the infrasound range of the frequency spectrum used by African elephants. Initial classification accuracies of 83.8% for call classification and 88.1% for speaker identification were obtained. The long-term goal of this research is to develop a universal analysis framework and robust feature set for animal …

Feminist Futures: Trauma, The Post-9/11 World And A Fourth Feminism?, E. Ann Kaplan Apr 2003

Feminist Futures: Trauma, The Post-9/11 World And A Fourth Feminism?, E. Ann Kaplan

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article will engage with the possibilities of feminist futures. That there is no monolithic feminism is a good, it at times uncomfortable, fact: positions, actions and knowledge – constantly being contested, questioned, and debated – mean that feminism is alive and well, and always changing in accord with larger social, historical and political changes. However, the ways in which social and political conditions on both local and global levels are impacting on feminism must be addressed. The post-9/11 world is one in which we need to re-think what feminisms have achieved and how the various groups positioned under the …

The Rok–U.S. Alliance: Where Is It Headed?, Kim Dong Shin Apr 2003

The Rok–U.S. Alliance: Where Is It Headed?, Kim Dong Shin

Strategic Forums

This Strategic Forum paper examines the evolving trajectory of the Republic of Korea–United States alliance amid shifting political, security, and strategic conditions in Northeast Asia. Marking the 50th anniversary of the Mutual Defense Treaty, the author argues that the alliance must adapt beyond its traditional focus on deterring North Korea to address new challenges, including Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program, generational political change in South Korea, and the broader U.S. global war on terrorism. The paper analyzes growing tensions in alliance perceptions, debates over U.S. force posture, operational control, and anti-American sentiment, and emphasizes the need for a comprehensive strategic plan …

Patent First, Litigate Later! The Scramble For Speculative And Overly Broad Genetic Patents: Implications For Access To Health Care And Biomedical Research, Ikechi Mgbeoji, Byron Allen Apr 2003

Patent First, Litigate Later! The Scramble For Speculative And Overly Broad Genetic Patents: Implications For Access To Health Care And Biomedical Research, Ikechi Mgbeoji, Byron Allen

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

This paper will not directly address the ethical considerations of allowing patents on human genetic sequences, although this continues to be a controversial debate in itself. Rather, the aim is to consider the legality of such gene patents and the effects such patents have on biomedical research and health care delivery in definitive terms through an analysis of current developments and research relating to the subject. The operation of current intellectual property regimes regulating such patents will be examined, and amendments to these legal systems will be considered. An emphasis will be placed on identifying practical concerns rather than broad, …
