Australian And Canadian Perspectives On Offshore Management, Donald R. Rothwell, David Vanderzwaag Apr 2003

Australian And Canadian Perspectives On Offshore Management, Donald R. Rothwell, David Vanderzwaag

Dalhousie Law Journal

Challenges in ocean and coastal management are facing all coastal states of the world. including Australia and Canada. Overharvesting of fish stocks, increasing pressure from land-based sources of pollution, expanding offshore petroleum developments, and rising risks of ship-sourced pollution in fragile marine ecosystems have caused both countries to begin a process of reassessment and rethinking. In January 1997 Canada adopted a new Oceans Act, which called for the development of a National Oceans Management Strategy based on principles of sustainable development, precaution and integration, and a new national marine protected areas network. In December 1998, Australia released a National Oceans …

Australia And Canada In Regional Fisheries Organizations: Implementing The United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, Rosemary Rayfuse, Marcus Haward, Gregory Rose, Sali Bache

Dalhousie Law Journal

In the late 1980s and early 1990s a number of factors and events coalesced to encourage the international community to re-examine high seas fisheries issues. The need to enhance the effectiveness of regional fisheries organizations led to the development of the 1995 United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement, dealing with straddling and highly migratory stocks. Both Canada and Australia played a significant role in the development of this agreement While having much in common, each state had different interests and concerns Canada's attention was focused on the problem of straddling stocks, while Australia 's interests have been primarily, though not exclusively, …

Delegalization Of Arms Control - A Democracy Deficit In De Facto Treaties Of Peace?, Antonio F. Perez Apr 2003

Delegalization Of Arms Control - A Democracy Deficit In De Facto Treaties Of Peace?, Antonio F. Perez

Chicago Journal of International Law

Delegalization of arms control is now an accomplished fact. In this period of potential dramatic revision of the international order, it is not surprising that the US is seeking increased flexibility in pursuing several strategies, including the full use of military and technological advantages. The motivations behind this include US interests, as well as long run global interests. What may be surprising, however, is the potential risk to our democratic processes from delegalization of arms control-that is to say, the danger posed by reduced use of arms control treaties with built-in processes of transparency and democratic accountability. The potential risk …

Terrorism, State Responsibility, And The Use Of Military Force, Greg Travalio, John Altenburg Apr 2003

Terrorism, State Responsibility, And The Use Of Military Force, Greg Travalio, John Altenburg

Chicago Journal of International Law

We have been told on countless occasions that we are at war against international terrorism. Casualties, both civilian and military, mount in this war-the most noteworthy terrorist attack produced more casualties than the attack on Pearl Harbor. Our military forces are engaged in a multitude of ways, from direct combat overseas, to advising friendly governments and their militaries, to assisting domestic law enforcement. We are advised that this war, like the Cold War before it, will be a long and difficult struggle. But if we are at war, it is a very different kind of war. Our enemies are not …

Male Reproductive Dynamics In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Jamie S. Heisig Apr 2003

Male Reproductive Dynamics In The Caribbean Spiny Lobster Panulirus Argus, Jamie S. Heisig

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The population size structure of the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Panulirus argus, in the Florida Keys, Florida (USA) has undergone a dramatic shift as a result of fishing pressure on the large individuals of the population. Male lobsters are affected most by fishing because of sexual dimorphism in size and other studies have shown that male size has direct impacts on reproductive output (i.e., number of fertilized eggs/clutch) that are independent of female size. To assess more precisely the impact of male size on fertilization success, I conducted laboratory experiments and field observations to examine various male reproductive attributes over …

Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes: Molecular Characterization And Regulation, Sheryl Lynne Walton Apr 2003

Hyaluronate Lyase Gene Of Streptococcus Pyogenes: Molecular Characterization And Regulation, Sheryl Lynne Walton

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Streptococcus pyogenes causes an assortment of diseases ranging from pharyngitis to necrotizing fasciitis. This bacterium has the ability to elaborate several extracellular products capable of causing tissue damage; one of which is a hyaluronate lyase. Little information is available regarding the regulation of streptococcal hyaluronidase. As such, the expression of hylA in the hyaluronate lyase-producing strain ATCC 10403 and in strains that do not produce detectable enzyme was analyzed by RT-PCR and quantitative PCR. Hyaluronate lyase transcript was detected throughout growth for all strains; however, expression of hylA in the enzymatically inactive strains, 71698 and SF370, was determined …

Characterization Of Mouse Prostate Tumor-Infiltrating Leukocytes, Daniel Alan Holterman Apr 2003

Characterization Of Mouse Prostate Tumor-Infiltrating Leukocytes, Daniel Alan Holterman

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Prostate cancer is the most common form of non-cutaneous cancer among men in the United States and the second most common cause of cancer-related death among men with approximately 189,000 new cases diagnosed and 30,200 deaths of the disease in 2002. Prostate cancer can be a treatable disease but once it becomes metastatic there are no acceptable therapies. For this reason, immunotherapy has been attempted but the results have been disappointing. The TRAMP model was used to evaluate specific interactions between an intact murine immune system and a prostate tumor that expressed a naturally processed weak tumor antigen. Vaccination trials …

Adaptive Segmentation Techniques For Object Region Extraction From Images With Complex Lighting Environment, Deepthi P. Valaparla Apr 2003

Adaptive Segmentation Techniques For Object Region Extraction From Images With Complex Lighting Environment, Deepthi P. Valaparla

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Automated image segmentation of objects in complex lighting environments is a difficult task since it is not possible to pre-define a threshold to distinguish the object from the background. It is ascertained that an effective threshold citation for such objects depends on the negative binomial distribution of the object region with respect to the background lighting. Based on this concept, a novel adaptive threshold selection method for automatic segmentation of the lumen region in endoscopic images is presented in this thesis. More precise lumen region and boundary are obtained by an integrated neighborhood search based region growing procedure whose speed …

It Does Take A Village To Raise A Child, Rebecca J. Boyd Apr 2003

It Does Take A Village To Raise A Child, Rebecca J. Boyd

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Utilizing Cullen's (1994) Social Support Theory and Hunter's (1985) three dimensions of social life, this study is a quantitative, cross-sectional secondary data analysis designed to examine the relationship between institutional social support and rates of juvenile crime for counties and cities in Virginia for the year 2000. Resting on the contention that an inverse, significant relationship exists between measures of institutional support and rates of juvenile property and violent crime, this study examines types of support provided by the institutions of family, school, and the government. These measures of institutional support include 1) familial support: median income, marriage support; 2) …

The Effects Of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate On Response Acquisition, Sean Patrick Laraway Apr 2003

The Effects Of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate On Response Acquisition, Sean Patrick Laraway

Dissertations

In the last 10 years, the use and abuse of the club drug gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) has noticeably increased. Because GHB has only recently emerged as a drug of abuse, relatively little is known about the drug's behavioral effects, including its effects on learning. Therefore, the present study sought to characterize GHB's effects on rats' acquisition of a lever-press response using a two-lever, resetting/cancellation procedure. Under this procedure, responses on one ( reinforcement ) lever produced a single food pellet after a delay of 0, 20, or 40 s. Presses on the second ( cancellation ) lever during a delay interval …

One Mind Or Two? How Psychiatrists And Psychologists Manage Medical-Scientific And Religious Interpretations Of Mind, Ellen Wagenfeld-Heintz Apr 2003

One Mind Or Two? How Psychiatrists And Psychologists Manage Medical-Scientific And Religious Interpretations Of Mind, Ellen Wagenfeld-Heintz

Dissertations

Building upon concepts from sociology of medicine, religion, knowledge, and professions, this study explores the social determinants of separation and integration of medical-scientific and religious approaches to mind and mental health. Using qualitative interviews, it shows how, to what extent, and why psychiatrists and psychologists of Judeo-Christian religious orientations or nonaffiliated believers in the State of Michigan are willing or reluctant to integrate religious paradigms in their mental health practices. The study turns to a content analysis of 3,680 articles from two leading professional journals to assess the participants’ claims regarding the treatment of religion prevalent in psychiatry and psychology. …

Real-Time Study Of Multidrug Resistance Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Nanoparticle Optics And Single Live Cell Imaging, Sophia Vasou Kyriacou Apr 2003

Real-Time Study Of Multidrug Resistance Mechanism In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Using Nanoparticle Optics And Single Live Cell Imaging, Sophia Vasou Kyriacou

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

This thesis centers on the study of the xenobiotic efflux system in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is a ubiquitous bacterium. It resists many structurally and functionally diverse substrates due to expression of Mex-extrusion pumps, including MexAB-OprM, MexCD-OprJ, MexEF-OprN and MexXY-OprM systems. Despite extensive research, the structure and mechanism of multidrug resistance is unclear (1-9). For example, (i) how do MexA, MexB and OprM proteins assemble to extrude antibiotics? (ii) What is the antibiotic susceptibility of MexA, MexB, and OprM proteins? (iii) How do substrates cross the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa? (iv) Where are antibiotics accumulated inside the cell? This thesis …

Effects Of Regular Exercise Training On Skeletal Muscle Contractile Function, Robert H. Fitts Apr 2003

Effects Of Regular Exercise Training On Skeletal Muscle Contractile Function, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Skeletal muscle function is critical to movement and one's ability to perform daily tasks, such as eating and walking. One objective of this article is to review the contractile properties of fast and slow skeletal muscle and single fibers, with particular emphasis on the cellular events that control or rate limit the important mechanical properties. Another important goal of this article is to present the current understanding of how the contractile properties of limb skeletal muscle adapt to programs of regular exercise.
