Federal Funding Of Human Embryo Stem Cell Research: Advocating A Broader Approach, Jason R. Braswell Apr 2003

Federal Funding Of Human Embryo Stem Cell Research: Advocating A Broader Approach, Jason R. Braswell

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Note, as one may surmise from the title, advocates a broader approach to federal funding of human embryo stem cell research. It begins with a look at the science of embryo stem cells and examines the medical promise that stem cell technology holds. It also briefly addresses the controversy that surrounds embryo stem cells. The Note then looks at why federal funding is so important to embryo stem cell research and how federal funding for embryo stem cell research is currently handled. Examination of current federal funding methodology leads to several concerns which are addressed, including property rights, flight …

Vertical Polymer Tunneling Sensor Platform By Hot Embossing Technique, Jing Wang Apr 2003

Vertical Polymer Tunneling Sensor Platform By Hot Embossing Technique, Jing Wang

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent development in microfabrication technology has brought much attention to the development of miniaturized, inexpensive and high-accuracy MEMS devices and microsystems. The ultimate goal of our project is to develop a versatile, three-dimensional, high precision sensor platform, which can be used for displacement, velocity or acceleration measurement. The first step, on which this dissertation is based, is to fabricate a one-dimensional (parallel with the Z axis) tunneling sensor, which in turn can be developed into two- and three-dimensional sensor platforms through structural and functional integration.

Since the invention of mini-structured high-sensitivity silicon-based tunneling sensor in 1993, the synthesis and fabrication …

Nanoscale Platinum And Iron -Cobalt Catalysts Deposited In Microchannel Microreactors For Use In Hydrogenation And Dehydrogenation Of Cyclohexene, Selective Oxidation Of Carbon Monoxide And Fischer -Tropsch Process To Higher Alkanes, Shihuai Zhao Apr 2003

Nanoscale Platinum And Iron -Cobalt Catalysts Deposited In Microchannel Microreactors For Use In Hydrogenation And Dehydrogenation Of Cyclohexene, Selective Oxidation Of Carbon Monoxide And Fischer -Tropsch Process To Higher Alkanes, Shihuai Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

Chemical Process Miniaturization (CPM) has predominant advantages in heat and mass transfer limited unit operations, synthesis of hazardous materials, and as a process development tool. For years, engineers have been seeking ways to apply CPM to practical applications. Studies of catalysts and catalyst supports that can be applied to microreactors are important for a number of commercially desirable gas phase reactions. Parameters such as surface-to-volume ratio and the pore structure of catalyst supports influence the activity and selectivity of the catalysts.

In this study, platinum, iron and cobalt catalysts were fabricated by sputtering deposition and compared with catalysts deposited by …

Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson Apr 2003

Effects Of Diabetes And Aging On Posture And Acceleration Thresholds During Lateral Translations, Samantha Jean Richerson

Doctoral Dissertations

Research objectives. One source of falls in the elderly may be an inability to sufficiently adjust to transient postural perturbations or slips. Identifying useful predictors of fall potential, as well as factors that affect the ability of an individual to detect a movement of the standing support surface may provide insight into postural stability and methods to increase stability in elders. To do this, acceleration thresholds to short, precise, lateral platform translations and the resultant psychophysical responses of adults with early Type 2 diabetes to age-matched controls and young adults were measured.

Methods. Using an innovative SLIP-FALLS platform, …

Machine Learning Approaches For Determining Effective Seeds For K -Means Algorithm, Kaveephong Lertwachara Apr 2003

Machine Learning Approaches For Determining Effective Seeds For K -Means Algorithm, Kaveephong Lertwachara

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I investigate and conduct an experiment on two-stage clustering procedures, hybrid models in simulated environments where conditions such as collinearity problems and cluster structures are controlled, and in real-life problems where conditions are not controlled. The first hybrid model (NK) is an integration between a neural network (NN) and the k-means algorithm (KM) where NN screens seeds and passes them to KM. The second hybrid (GK) uses a genetic algorithm (GA) instead of the neural network. Both NN and GA used in this study are in their simplest-possible forms.

In the simulated data sets, I investigate two …

Crazy (Mental Illness Under The Ada), Jane Byeff Korn

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article examines how people with mental disabilities and mental illnesses have been treated under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Part I addresses the history of mental illness. It argues that while beliefs about the causes and content of mental illness have vacillated over time, the mentally ill have received consistently poor treatment throughout human history. Part II addresses present problems with the definition of mental illness, including how mental illness and mental disability are defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Part III discusses the problems faced by people with mental illness today. The author argues the current state …

Getting Control Of Your Money #3: Improving Cash Flow, Jack Davis

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

How much short-term credit does your family farm business need for the year? When and where will cash be generated? A useful tool for finding these answers and managing the financial needs of the family farm is a cash flow budget. The cash flow budget is an estimate of cash receipts and expenditures for a specific time period. The budget only looks at money flows into and out of the business, not at net income or profitability.

Strategy Uses And Study Time: Relationship With Memory Performance In Older Adults, Karen A. S. Doolittle

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The overall purpose of this study was to foster a greater understanding of age-related memory loss as it pertains to the aging workforce's ability to remain productive and effective in a time of complex change, and to recommend some adjustments that can be made to compensate for these memory declines. The specific intent of this current project was to test one premise of Ericsson and Chase's Skilled Memory Theory, namely that memory skill is a skill that can be developed through enhanced encoding and through practice. By introducing participants to the simple mnemonic strategy of chunking and by allowing two …

Faculty Publications

Brucella abortus reportedly produces the monocatechol siderophore 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) in response to iron limitation. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the cloned DHBA biosynthesis locus from virulent B. abortus 2308 and genetic complementation of defined Escherichia coli mutants were used to identify the B. abortus genes (designated dhbC, -B, and -A) responsible for synthesis of this siderophore. Reverse transcriptase PCR analysis of total RNA with dhb-specific primers demonstrated that dhbC, -B, and -A are transcribed as components of an operon, together with dhbE, a functional homolog of the Escherichia coli entE gene. Homologs of the E. coli entD and Vibrio cholerae …

Urbanization And Its Relationship To Water Quality Within The Bronson Creek Watershed, Jason Cristopher Creech Apr 2003

Urbanization And Its Relationship To Water Quality Within The Bronson Creek Watershed, Jason Cristopher Creech

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

A watershed analysis project was undertaken to investigate the impact of urbanization on the water quality with Bronson Creek; a small urban stream in the metropolitan area of Portland, Oregon. Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) have been established for several water quality parameters within the watershed.

Water quality data were collected at nine sampling along Bronson Creek by Clean Water Services, a local public utility charged with storm water management and water quality protection duties. Only seven water quality parameters were included in the analysis; they were 1) temperature, 2) total phosphorous, 3) ortho-phosphate, 4) ammonia, 5) total nitrogen, 6) …
