It seems but a few days ago that we were beginning the spring semester in January along with the ringing in of the New Year. Our students returned from holidays, and our members of the Distinguished President’s Trust gathered at the MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center in Kingsport to greet new members and celebrate a successful year of fund raising. And, our men’s basketball team was showing signs of what proved to be an exciting season. With our firm grip of the Southern Conference championship and return to the NCAA tournament, we all stand proud of our men’s basketball …

Tracking Bacterial Pollution Sources In Stormwater Pipes, Stephen H. Jones
Tracking Bacterial Pollution Sources In Stormwater Pipes, Stephen H. Jones
PREP Reports & Publications
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) conducted two rounds of wet weather sampling in the Hampton Harbor watershed during 2002. Samples were collected from stormdrains, tributaries, and harbor stations for bacteria and flow in order to calculate bacteria loads. This information was needed to prioritize pollution sources as part of a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) study of bacteria in Hampton Harbor (Trowbridge, 2003). Two of the 16 monitored stormdrain pipes were selected for microbial source determination using ribotype profiling. Stormdrain pipe selection was based on the bacteria loading data from the first wet weather sampling that occurred …

In China, midseason paddy drainage, which reduces growing season methane fluxes and enhances growing season nitrous oxide fluxes, was first implemented in the early 1980s, and has gradually replaced continuous flooding in much of the paddy rice area. We constructed a prediction rice paddy methane and nitrous oxide emissions in China using the DNDC biogeochemical model. Results of continuous flooding and midseason drainage simulations for all paddy fields in China (about 30 million ha) were combined with regional scenarios for the timing of the transition from continuous flooding to predominantly mid-season drainage to generate estimates of total methane (CH4) and …

For the past quarter century, eloquent voices in the academy have articulated the value of hands on experiences in the workplace to reinforce and interrogate classroom learning. Internships and other types of fieldwork experiences enable students to test career options, improve their employment potential, challenge assumptions underlying theoretic approaches to the discipline, gain familiarity with the language and ethnography of the professional work places they plan to enter, and enlarge their sense of the role of research in their fields. Aprotracted experience that counterpoints theoretical and applied dimensions of a discipline can nurture critical habits of mind that will persist …
“A Country Wonderfully Prepared For Their Entertainment” The Aftermath Of The New England Indian Epidemic Of 1616, Matthew Kruer
“A Country Wonderfully Prepared For Their Entertainment” The Aftermath Of The New England Indian Epidemic Of 1616, Matthew Kruer
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
A formidable mythology has grown up around the Pilgrims and their voyage to the New World. In the popular myth a group of idealistic religious reformers fled persecution into the wilds of the New World, braving seas, storms, winter, hunger, and death at the hands of teeming hordes of Indians, carving a new life out of an unspoiled wilderness, building a civilization with naked force of will and an unshakable religious vision. As with most historical myths, this account has been idealized to the point that it obscures the facts of the Pilgrims’ voyage. When the handful of separatists stepped …

Butterflies Of The North Okanagan, British Columbia, Canada, David L. Threatful
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
An annotated list of 106 species of butterflies known to occur in the north Okanagan area of British Columbia, Canada is presented. Information is provided on flight phenology, elevation and habitat for each species. Field work over the past 100 years shows that this is one of the premiere areas in Canada for butterfly species diversity. More than one third of all known Canadian butterflies have been found in this small area.
Migrations Of Grassland Communities And Grazing Philosophies In The Great Plains: A Review And Implications For Management, Joe C. Truett
Migrations Of Grassland Communities And Grazing Philosophies In The Great Plains: A Review And Implications For Management, Joe C. Truett
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Ecologists commonly separate Great Plains grasslands communities into types based on grass height: shortgrass prairie, mixed-grass prairie, and tallgrass prairie. Grass height correlates directly with precipitation and thus lessens with distance westward and with drought. Grass height correlates inversely with grazing intensity and thus shortgrasses expand eastward when grazing pressures are great and shrink westward when grazing pressures relax. Evidence about past distributions of shortgrasses, coupled with the prehistoric and historic abundances of large grazers and the black-tailed prairie dog (a shortgrass indicator), suggest a far-eastward occurrence of shortgrass prairie in the late Pleistocene (despite a relatively wet climate), a …
Range And Population Size Of The American Burying Beetle (Coleoptera: Silphidae) In The Dissected Hills Of South-Central Nebraska, Mark Peyton
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus Olivier) is the only insect found in Nebraska currently on the federal endangered species list. I conducted surveys in 1995, 1996, and 1998 to determine range and population size of the American burying beetle in south-central Nebraska, A total of 826 individuals were captured during these three years, A Sequential Bayes Algorithm was used to estimate population size based on mark and recapture data. Results from this study and other studies identify the range of this population in south-central Nebraska as an approximately 4,500 km2 area located south of the Platte River in …
Fish Community Persistence In Eastern North And South Dakota Rivers, Jeffrey Shearer, Charles Berry, Jr.
Fish Community Persistence In Eastern North And South Dakota Rivers, Jeffrey Shearer, Charles Berry, Jr.
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Over the past 25 years, the James River in North and South Dakota has experienced records in minimum and maximum discharge. Our objectives were to compare: (1) the fish community in the main river after dry (1988-90) and wet (1993-2000) years, and (2) the fish community of both the main river and tributaries between dry (1975) and wet (1998-2000) years. In South Dakota in the main river, there were 10 families and 29 species after several dry years and 11 families and 35 species after several wet years. Percichthyidae was the additional family after the wet years. Basinwide, there were …

"I Have Work To Do" Work Roles And Affirming Or Marginalizing Experiences Among Women At Professor Rank, Florence A. Hamrick
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
This qualitative study of women at professor rank at a Research Extensive university explored work roles as well as occasions and events that signified affirmation or marginalization to respondents as they performed their work. Three primary work roles emerged: disciplinary expert, mentor or model, and advisor or change agent. Although all respondents clearly identified themselves as disciplinary experts, the other two roles were often more complex. Respondents generally experienced affirmation through student, collegial, and institutional recognitions of expertise and effectiveness. Marginalizing experiences included serving token roles on committees or other bodies and being a "lone voice" on issues of equity.
Gender Differences In Preference For Learning Environment Among Aviation Education Students, Eric M. Moyer
Gender Differences In Preference For Learning Environment Among Aviation Education Students, Eric M. Moyer
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
This study investigated whether differences existed between sex, male and female, for the preference of three different syllabi describing three different learning environments. Learning environments consisted of collaborative, and individual, with the individual sub-divided into competitive, and individual while co-varying participants for credit hours. 264 surveys were administered to students in freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes in order to collect preference, and demographic data. The surveys were presented as three fictional syllabi differing only in class grading format, and a paragraph on the instructional philosophy of the professor. Instructional philosophies described the proposed environment of the class by enforcing …

Marine Science Faculty Publications
A Lagrangian analysis of the transport and dispersal of plumes observed in satellite‐derived ocean color images was conducted using a data‐assimilating model of the Gulf of Mexico. The interaction between pervasive cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies in the Gulf generated advective paths that connect remote shelf regions. These paths aligned remarkably well with the plume events recorded with the chlorophyll‐a ocean color product from SeaWiFS. Two such events were studied. In one event material was transported in a thin strip between the northern wall of the Loop Current and an adjacent cyclone, connecting the eastern Campheche shelf (off the Yucatan Peninsula) …

Development Of A Procedure For Sustainable In Situ Aquifer Denitrification, Imtiyaz A. Khan, Roy F. Spalding
Development Of A Procedure For Sustainable In Situ Aquifer Denitrification, Imtiyaz A. Khan, Roy F. Spalding
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Denitrification experiments have provided data showing the pitfalls and successes in developing a sustainable injection/extraction system in a sand and gravel aquifer. Experiments increase in complexity from continuous injection at one well to automated-pulsed eight well injections. In both continuous and pulsed injection of organic carbon, 40 mg NO3-N l–1 was reduced below the detection limit of < 0.1 mg NO3-N l–1 in the denitrification zones. Under continuous injection, accumulation of bacterial exudates in the vicinity of the injection well resulted in injection well clogging within ten days. Periodic cleaning of the injection well and the adjacent …

Phyllodistomum Funduli N. Sp. (Trematoda: Gorgoderidae) From Fundulus Sciadicus Cope From Cedar Creek In Western Nebraska, Jaclyn Helt, John J. Janvoy Jr., John Ubelaker
John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications
Phyllodistomum funduli n. sp. is described from the urinary bladder and ureters of the Plains topminnow, Fundulus sciadicus, from Cedar Creek in Keith County, Nebraska (41°11.18'N, 101°21.77'W). Phyllodistomum funduli differs from most other Phyllodistomum species reported in possessing an oral sucker that is larger than the acetabulum. Currently, 7 other species of Phyllodistomum have been reported to possess this trait. A comparison of P. funduli with these 7 other species indicates that P. funduli is a distinct species, lacking notches, posterior body folds, caudal projections, or cephalic glands found in some congeners. There is no published report on parasites …
