Believing In Health, Thomas G. Plante Apr 2003

Believing In Health, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

Every minute of every day people from across the globe and from all religious traditions pray. Whether their prayers are offered at home, at work, in nature, in a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or elsewhere, at any given moment, millions are participating in some prayerful religious activity. What are they praying for? Certainly, prayers for health and healing must be close to the top of the list.

There has been tremendous interest in the relationship between religious faith and health for thousands of years. Regardless of religious tradition, people have sought religious guidance and spiritual support to help prevent, recover …

The Nematode Fauna Of Long-Nosed Mice Oxymycterus Spp. From The Bolivian Yungas, F Agustín Jiménez-Ruiz, Scott Lyell Gardner

Publications

During a long-term survey of the parasites of mammals from all over Bolivia, 44 individuals of Oxymycterus inca and 6 of Oxymycterus paramensis were collected and examined for parasites from the foothills and Eastern Cordillera (Los Yungas) of the Andes of Bolivia. Three species of nematode were found including, from the cecum, a previously unknown genus and species of pinworm, Caroloxyuris boliviensis n. gen, n. sp., aspidoderids representing Nematomystes rodentophilus, and from the stomach, Protospirura numidica criceticola. These helminths occurred in prevalences of 25, 9, and 14%, respectively, in O. paramensis. Caroloxyuris boliviensis resembles species included in …

Interstrain Inhibition In The Sweet Potato Pathogen Streptomyces Ipomoeae: Purification And Characterization Of A Highly Specific Bacteriocin And Cloning Of Its Structural Gene, Xiujun Zhang, Christopher A. Clark, Gregg S. Pettis

Faculty Publications

Strains of the sweet potato soil rot pathogen Streptomyces ipomoeae had previously been divided into three groups based on their ability to inhibit one another during pairwise cocultivation. While group I strains are not antagonistic to members of the other groups, group II and group III strains produce separate substances that are inhibitory to strains outside their respective cognate groups. Here, we purified the group III inhibitory substance from the culture supernatant of a representative strain and found that it consists of a single 10-kDa cationic protein which is bacteriolytic for S. ipomoeae group I and II strains but which …

Y Chromosome Str Haplotypes And The Genetic Structures Of U.S. Populations Of African, European, And Hispanic Ancestry, Manfred Kayser, Silke Brauer, Hiltrud Schädlich, Mechthild Prinz, Mark A. Batzer, Peter A. Zimmerman, B. A. Boatin, Mark Stoneking

Faculty Publications

To investigate geographic structure within U.S. ethnic populations, we analyzed 1705 haplotypes on the basis of 9 short tandem repeat (STR) loci on the Y-chromosome from 9-11 groups each of African-Americans, European-Americans, and Hispanics. There were no significant differences in the distribution of Y-STR haplotypes among African-American groups, whereas European-American and Hispanic groups did exhibit significant geographic heterogeneity. However, the significant heterogeneity resulted from one sample; removal of that sample in each case eliminated the significant heterogeneity. Multidimensional scaling analysis of RST values indicated that African-American groups formed a distinct cluster, whereas there was some intermingling of European-American and Hispanic …

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Gull Lake Water Quality Summer Of 1998, Jill Downing Apr 2003

Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Gull Lake Water Quality Summer Of 1998, Jill Downing

Masters Theses

Suspended sediments derived from surface runoff can cause deterioration in aquatic ecosystems by reducing sunlight penetrating through suspended solids to reach subsurface biological organisms. It can also have an adverse effect on recreational, agricultural, and industrial uses. Monitoring the spatial distribution of suspended sediments is important in resource management of surface waters. Field spectrometry has been applied successfully toward establishing relationships between spectral response and water quality parameters including suspended sediment concentrations. The objective of this research was to develop possible correlations between hyperspectrum and water quality attributes of depth, turbidity, and nutrients of an inland freshwater lake in southwest …

Exploring Darwin’S Correspondence: Some Important But Lesser Known Correspondents And Projects, Tyler Veak

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper explores Darwin's 14,000 plus letters and suggests that in spite of the enormous amount of published material on Darwin and his work, there remains much untapped information in his correspondence. A quantitative analysis of his correspondence, reveals that many of Darwin's most important sources and projects have not been researched. I provide examples in two of his correspondents, William B. Tegetmeier and John Scott, who were extremely important to Darwin's work in domestic animal breeding and plant hybrid studies, respectively. In addition, Darwin's work on seed viability and distribution are discussed to illustrate both the extent of his …

Aintegumenta Utilizes A Mode Of Dna Recognition Distinct From That Used By Proteins Containing A Single Ap2 Domain, Beth A. Krizek

Faculty Publications

The Arabidopsis protein AINTEGUMENTA (ANT) is an important regulator of organ growth during flower development. ANT is a member of the AP2 subclass of the AP2/ERF family of plant-specific transcription factors. These proteins contain either one or two copies of a DNA-binding domain called the AP2 domain. Here, it is shown that ANT can act as a transcriptional activator in yeast through binding to a consensus ANT-binding site. This activity was used as the basis for a genetic screen to identify amino acids that are critical for the DNA binding ability of ANT. Mutants that showed reduced or no activation …

Comparison Of Chlorophyll And Carotenoid Concentrations Among Russian Wheat Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae)-Infested Wheat Isolines, Tiffany Heng-Moss, X. Ni, T. Macedo, John P. Markwell, Frederick P. Baxendale, S. S. Quisenberry, V. Tolmay Apr 2003

Comparison Of Chlorophyll And Carotenoid Concentrations Among Russian Wheat Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae)-Infested Wheat Isolines, Tiffany Heng-Moss, X. Ni, T. Macedo, John P. Markwell, Frederick P. Baxendale, S. S. Quisenberry, V. Tolmay

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), feeding injury on ‘Betta’ wheat isolines with the Dn1 and Dn2 genes was compared by assessing chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations, and aphid fecundity. The resistant Betta isolines (i.e., Betta-Dn1 and Betta-Dn2) supported similar numbers of aphids, but had significantly fewer than the susceptible Betta wheat, indicating these lines are resistant to aphid feeding. Diuraphis noxia feeding resulted in different responses in total chlorophyll and carotenoid concentrations among the Betta wheat isolines. The infested Betta-Dn2 plants had higher levels of chlorophylls and carotenoids in comparison with uninfested plants. In contrast, infested Betta-Dn1 plants had the …

Plasma And Red Blood Cells Membrane Lipid Concentration Of Sickle Cell Disease Patients, Zuhair M. Marzouki, Samir M. Khoja

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to determine the concentration of plasma and red blood cells (RBCs) membrane lipids in Saudi sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. METHODS: This study was carried out at the Hematology Clinic, King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from October 1998 to October 1999. Lipid concentrations were determined in plasma and RBC membrane of 81 SCD patients and 66 normal healthy matched individuals (control). Different lipid parameters were measured according to standardized enzymatic assay methods. RESULTS: The plasma concentrations of total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol of SCD patients were significantly decreased (p<0.001), whereas the plasma concentrations of high density lipoprotein phospholipids were significantly increased (p<0.001). The plasma concentrations of apo A and apo B were significantly decreased (p<0.001) in SCD patients. However, the concentration of total cholesterol of RBC membrane was significantly increased (p<0.001) in SCD patients, while the phospholipid content was significantly decreased (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The significant increase of RBC membrane cholesterol concentration in SCD patients possibly is responsible to the change in RBC membrane fluidity that may play a direct role in the sickling phenomenon of RBCs in SCD.

Lack Of Widespread Organochlorine Pesticide Contamination In South American Resident Passerines, Given Harper, A. Capparella, J. Klemens, J. Frick

Scholarship

Recent studies have documented the existence of organochlorine (OC) pesticides and metabolites— notably p,p'-DDE, dieldrin and heptachlor epoxide—in the nglg range in many species of Neotropical migrant passerines that breed in the Nearctic region and winter in the Neotropics (e.g., Kannan 1991; Harper et al. 1996; Klemens et al. 2000; Bartuszevige et al. 2002). This is despite the banning and/or restricted use of OC pesticides in the United States and Canada in the 1970s and the observed decline in DDT residues in migratory songbirds seen in the 1970s (Johnston 1974). Apparently, these relatively short-lived birds are still being exposed to …
