Differential Expression Of The Invasion-Associated Locus B (Ialb) Gene Of Bartonella Bacilliformis In Response To Environmental Cues, Sherry A. Coleman, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bartonella bacilliformis is the causative agent of the biphasic human disease, Oroya fever. During the primary disease phase, up to 100% of the circulating erythrocytes can be parasitized and 80% lysed. During the secondary phase of this disease, bacterial invasion shifts to endothelial cells lining the vasculature. B. bacilliformis is transferred between human hosts by the sandfly, Lutzomyia verrucarum. To investigate the regulation of ialB by environmental cues signaling vector-to-host transmission; nuclease protection assays were performed to compare the amount of ialB mRNA in bacteria subjected to temperature shift, pH change, oxidative stress, or hemin limitation. The amount of ialB …

Peptide−Protein Interactions: Photoinduced Electron-Transfer Within The Preformed And Encounter Complexes Of A Designed Metallopeptide And Cytochrome C, Robin C. Lasey, Liu Liu, Ling Zang, Michael Y. Ogawa Apr 2003

Peptide−Protein Interactions: Photoinduced Electron-Transfer Within The Preformed And Encounter Complexes Of A Designed Metallopeptide And Cytochrome C, Robin C. Lasey, Liu Liu, Ling Zang, Michael Y. Ogawa

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Photoinduced electron-transfer (ET) occurs between a negatively charged metallopeptide, [Ru(bpy)2(phen-am)-Cys-(Glu)(5)-Gly](3-) = RuCE(5)G, and ferricytochrome c = Cyt c. In the presence of Cyt c, the triplet state lifetime of the ruthenium metallopeptide is shortened, and the emission decays via biexponential kinetics, which indicates the existence of two excited-state populations of ruthenium peptides. The faster decay component displays concentration-independent kinetics demonstrating the presence of a preformed peptide-protein complex that undergoes intra-complex electron-transfer. Values of K-b = (3.5 +/- 0.2) x 10(4) M-1 and k(ET)(obs) = (2.7 +/- 0.4) x 10(6) s(-1) were observed at ambient temperatures. The magnitude of k(ET)(obs) decreases …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Oligonucleotide microarrays were used to profile directly extracted rRNA from environmental microbial populations without PCR amplification. In our initial inspection of two distinct estuarine study sites, the hybridization patterns were reproducible and varied between estuarine sediments of differing salinities. The determination of a thermal dissociation curve (i.e., melting profile) for each probe-target duplex provided information on hybridization specificity, which is essential for confirming adequate discrimination between target and nontarget sequences.

Relativistic Laser–Plasma Interactions, Donald Umstadter Apr 2003

Relativistic Laser–Plasma Interactions, Donald Umstadter

Donald Umstadter Publications

By focusing petawatt peak power laser light to intensities up to 1021 Wcm−2, highly relativistic plasmas can now be studied. The force exerted by light pulses with this extreme intensity has been used to accelerate beams of electrons and protons to energies of a million volts in distances of only microns. This acceleration gradient is a thousand times greater than in radio-frequency-based accelerators. Such novel compact laser-based radiation sources have been demonstrated to have parameters that are useful for research in medicine, physics and engineering. They might also someday be used to ignite controlled thermonuclear fusion. Ultrashort …

Toward A National Biodefense Strategy: Challenges And Opportunities, Center For Counterproliferation Research

Books and Book Chapters

The United States is re-learning an important lesson in the first decade of the 21st century: adversaries may attack the United States, its interests, or those of friends and allies with biological weapons (BW). The last century witnessed the purported use of glanders by the Germans in World War I and the use of dysentery, plague, and typhus by the Japanese in World War II. But biological weapons were not constrained to wartime settings in the last century. The Rajneeshees, a religious cult in Oregon, employed salmonella to advance their own political agenda. States such as Iraq and the former …

National Self-Defense, International Law, And Weapons Of Mass Destruction, Thomas Graham Jr. Apr 2003

National Self-Defense, International Law, And Weapons Of Mass Destruction, Thomas Graham Jr.

Chicago Journal of International Law

The most publicized element of The National Security Strategy of the United States of America (the "Strategy"), promulgated in September 2002 by the Bush administration, is its emphasis on the option to use preemptive military strikes to address threats to the United States before they fully materialize. This is set in the context of terrorist organizations, such as al Qaeda, or so-called rogue states, such as Iraq or North Korea, acquiring and threatening to use weapons of mass destruction-in other words, chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons. The terms "preemptive attack," "preventive war," and "anticipatory self-defense" will be used interchangeably in …

Character Education: How Does It Affect Student Self-Perception Of Both Character And Achievement In An Integrated Curriculum?, John M. Schembri

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Over the last few decades, change in communities, families, and education has placed an increasing demand on teachers to supplement societal deficiencies at school with hopes of improving the quality of child and adolescent development. In an effort to address this growing need, educators have revamped their traditional teaching styles to meet the educational needs of all students. This has been accomplished by initiating integrated curriculums that create more inviting, student-centered environments that focus on authentic education. The goal is to teach content through real-world scenarios in hopes to supplement valuable life lessons. This study focused on 48 students in …

The Relationship Between Teachers' Years-Of-Teaching And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Beverly M. Klecker Apr 2003

The Relationship Between Teachers' Years-Of-Teaching And Students' Mathematics Achievement, Beverly M. Klecker

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study examined differences in student achievement on the 2000 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Mathematics Test by their teachers’ years-of-experience teaching mathematics. Data examined were mean scale scores of fourth and eighth grades in five sample groups: national (public and private school students combined), national public school students, and Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas public school students. These states were chosen because of their statewide systematic school reform efforts. The research question was: Are mathematics scores of students of more experienced mathematics teachers higher than those of students of less experienced teachers? The National Assessment of Educational Progress data …

Cultural Diversity's Impact On Firm Performance: The Moderating Influence Of Diversity Initiatives And Socialization Tactics, Amy Mcmillan-Capehart Apr 2003

Cultural Diversity's Impact On Firm Performance: The Moderating Influence Of Diversity Initiatives And Socialization Tactics, Amy Mcmillan-Capehart

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to test the hypothesized relationships between cultural diversity and firm performance. Specifically, this dissertation examines whether or not socialization tactics and diversity initiatives moderate the relationship between diversity and firm performance. This dissertation uses ROA, ROE, and employee productivity in order to capture an accurate picture of firm performance.

My second purpose is to test competing hypotheses that are based on different theories. Theories relating to diversity suggest that there may be both positive and negative effects of a heterogeneous workforce. Therefore, it is necessary to isolate those instances in which diversity can …
