Explosive Remnants Of War: The Impact Of Current Negotiations, Paul Ellis Apr 2003

Explosive Remnants Of War: The Impact Of Current Negotiations, Paul Ellis

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

“While there has been significant progress in reducing the scourge of APLs, the menace posed by unexploded artillery shells, mortar rounds, hand grenades, cluster bomb submunitions and other similar objects must also be addressed.”—ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger, 2002.

Save Martha Stewart? Observations About Equal Justice In U.S. Insider Trading Regulation, Joan Macleod Heminway Apr 2003

Save Martha Stewart? Observations About Equal Justice In U.S. Insider Trading Regulation, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

Martha Stewart is the subject of a civil enforcement action alleging violations of U.S. securities laws and regulations governing insider trading. The facts, as we now know them, suggest that the considerable governmental resources spent in pursuit of Martha Stewart (which are out of proportion to the apparent financial magnitude of any illegal trading activity) result from an express decision to single her out for potential criminal prosecution or civil enforcement based on some personal characteristic or characteristics. After describing the basic structure of insider trading regulation in the United States, this paper identifies potential structural sources of selective enforcement …

Difference Equations From Discretization Of A Continuous Epidemic Model With Immigration Of Infectives, Sophia Jang, Saber Elaydi Apr 2003

Difference Equations From Discretization Of A Continuous Epidemic Model With Immigration Of Infectives, Sophia Jang, Saber Elaydi

Mathematics Faculty Research

A continuous-time epidemic model with immigration of infectives is introduced. Systems of difference equations obtained from the continuous-time model by using nonstandard discretization technique are presented. Comparisons between the continuous-time model and its discrete counter-part are made.

Using Serial (Odd) Month Live Cattle Futures Contracts, Matthew Diersen Apr 2003

Using Serial (Odd) Month Live Cattle Futures Contracts, Matthew Diersen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) recently introduced serial futures contracts for live cattle. Essentially, this means contracts will be available for each month of the year. An obvious benefit of the additional contracts is a potential reduction in basis risk. Basis risk results when the actual basis, the difference between the cash price received and the futures price, differs from the expected basis. During 2002 the basis during non-delivery months was relatively wide, resulting in reduced income for cattle feeders who tried to hedge price risk. In this paper, serial contracts are examined to determine their usefulness to hedgers. Then, …

Decision-Support Systems: Notions, Prototypes, And In-Use Applications With Emphasis On Military Applications, Jens G. Pohl, Arthur Chapman, Kym Jason Pohl, Jonathan Primrose, Adam Wozniak Apr 2003

Decision-Support Systems: Notions, Prototypes, And In-Use Applications With Emphasis On Military Applications, Jens G. Pohl, Arthur Chapman, Kym Jason Pohl, Jonathan Primrose, Adam Wozniak

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This report describes work performed by the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past several years in the design and implementation of collaborative, computer-based, decision-support systems, mostly for military applications. In these systems multiple components, either program modules or separate processes (i.e., software agents), cooperate with each other and human decision makers to solve complex problems. The components are essentially of two types: knowledge-based narrow domain experts that provide services to other agents (i.e., service-agents); and, more autonomous agents (i.e., object-agents) that represent the interests of selected objects in high level information representation schemas.

Based on the notion …

The Bold And The Shy: Individual Differences In Rainbow Trout, L. U. Sneddon Apr 2003

The Bold And The Shy: Individual Differences In Rainbow Trout, L. U. Sneddon

Aquaculture Collection

Boldness and shyness were investigated as ‘personality’ traits in hatchery-reared rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Bold fish spent more time in an open area and were more active than shy fish and these behaviours could be used as indicators of boldness and shyness. These differences were related to learning ability in a simple conditioning task. Bold fish learned the task more quickly than shy fish.

Biological Sciences

Model silicone foul-release coatings with controlled molecular architecture were evaluated to determine the effect of compositional variables such as filler loading and crosslink density on pseudobarnacle attachment strength. Pseudobarnacle adhesion values correlated with filler loadings in both condensation and hydrosilylation-cured silicones. Variation of crosslink density of hydrosilylation-cured silicones had an insignificant effect on attachment strength. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the mode of failure upon detachment of the pseudobarnacle was dependent upon the crosslink density; samples with high crosslink density failed cohesively within the silicone.

Fisheries Research Reports

This report is the latest in a series covering the West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery (formerly the West Coast Rock Lobster Limited Entry Fishery), Western Australia’s largest and most valuable fishery. These reports form an historical record of fishery data and information documented season by season for use by industry and research personnel now and in the future. The reports provide information on catch, fishing effort and biology; value of the product and licences; input costs (fuel, bait, etc.); changes in fishing practices, gear, technology and boats and management/legislative changes. By necessity, the information contained herein is summarised from …

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library

Each year Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list to inspire students and the rest of our campus community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read. These summer reading picks are guaranteed to offer much adventure, drama, and fun!

This first issue of You’ve Gotta Read This was published in May 2003 and featured fabulous clip-art for the cover and recommendations from 37 faculty members. The most popular title for this year? The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

Teachers' Resource For Materials And Environmental Chemistry, Carnetta Skipworth Apr 2003

Teachers' Resource For Materials And Environmental Chemistry, Carnetta Skipworth

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In many secondary education chemistry classrooms, teachers have a difficult time introducing chemistry topics in a way that will be interesting to the high school student. The development of a materials and environmental chemistry teacher's manual will help teachers introduce a variety of selected topics in an interesting fashion to the students. This manual focuses on the subjects covered for freshman and sophomore level students. The manual uses five separate experiments to introduce topics such as the electromagnetic spectrum and solubility. The five experiments include a test on tennis shoe stiffness and energy dissipation ability, pesticides in water, grease in …
