Development Of An Atrophic Nonunion Model And Comparison To A Closed Healing Fracture In Rat Femur, Takeshi Kokubu, David J. Hak, Scott J. Hazelwood, A. Hari Reddi
Biomedical Engineering
Although most fractures heal, some fail to heal and become nonunions. Many animal models have been developed to study problems of fracture healing. The majority of nonunion models have involved segmental bone defects, but this may not adequately represent the biologic condition in which nonunions clinically develop. The objective of the present study is to develop a nonunion model that better simulates the clinical situation in which there is soft tissue damage including periosteal disruption and to compare this model to a standard closed fracture model utilizing identical fracture stabilization, providing a similar mechanical environment. A total of 96 three …

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity is influenced by dietary consumption of fat while much of the population consumes a diet deficient of the trace mineral copper. Obesity and copper deficiency can alter cardiovascular function; including cardiac hypertrophy, increased myocyte lipid droplet volume, and cardiac contractile depression. Interestingly, lipotoxic dysfunction is characterized by many of the same mechanistic alterations that are observed in obesity and copper deficiency. Additionally, the sphingolipid ceramide is elevated in lipotoxic dysfunction. However, functional leptin:leptin receptor signaling prevents lipotoxic dysfunction. The purpose of my dissertation was to determine the role of a high fat and marginal copper deficient diet on cardiac …

Ida B. Wells, Catherine Impey, And Trans -Atlantic Dimensions Of The Nineteenth-Century Anti-Lynching Movement, Brucella Wiggins Jordan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Unlike the majority of scholarship on the anti-lynching movement, this study focuses on the contribution and interaction of trans-Atlantic participants in the nineteenth century phase of the movement. According to current historiography, the origin of the anti-lynching movement is generally associated with the protest journalism of Ida B. Wells and her exile from the American South in 1892. This study however, redefines that date of origin as well as the period of time in which Americans and persons in the United Kingdom began working together to expose the crime of lynching beyond American shores. In this perspective, the activities of …

Changes In Immune Cell Populations And The Antibody Response To Streptococcus Pneumoniae After Exposure To A Mixture Of Herbicides, Patricia De La Rosa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The environment that we live in is composed of many different chemicals, Because of this, all chemical exposures, whether environmental or industrial, are exposures to mixtures. These mixtures have the potential to affect the immune system in a manner that is qualitatively or quantitatively different from the response to the individual components of the mixture. My experiments examine the effects of in vivo exposure to a mixture of herbicides on immune cell populations and on the humoral immune response to immunization with heat killed, whole-cell, Streptococcus pneumoniae (HKSP). The herbicide propanil (3,4-dichloropropionanilide) is sold as a mixture with the herbicide …

From Snakes To Meaning: Interpretation And Explanation Of Traditional Sub-Saharan African Religious Ethnographic Data, Joel Mort
Masters Theses
Concerns about accepted approaches to ethnographic data have arisen in terms of how scholars attempt to explain and interpret the formation, transmission, and persistence of seemingly bizarre religious ideas and practices. I would like to suggest a new way to make sense of ethnographic data regarding religious thought and action.
My contention is that the explanatory and interpretive methods employed by the majority of religion scholars are mistakenly and unknowingly informed by intuitive background theories. As a result of using intuitive assumptions rather than an established scientific theoretical tradition as the basis for interpretive inference the conclusions offered by these …

Solution-Phase Combinatorial Synthesis; Peptide Derivatives Of Ethyl P-Aminobenzoate, Andrea Scuderi
Solution-Phase Combinatorial Synthesis; Peptide Derivatives Of Ethyl P-Aminobenzoate, Andrea Scuderi
Theses
The need to find more efficient and cost-effective methods of drug development has led pharmaceutical companies to examine combinatorial means of synthesis. The ability to carry out parallel synthesis by the hundreds of compounds is rapidly advancing synthetic, analytical, and biological research. In this thesis project, peptide derivatives of ethyl paminobenzoate were synthesized via solution phase combinatorial techniques. A total of 27 tri-peptide analogs were produced, using a polymer-supported carbodiimide resin as the coupling agent. The structures of all products and intermediates were confirmed by LC-MS. Two methods were used for sequential deprotection of these analogs. The traditional method using …
Distribution Of Stingless Bees (Meliponinae) At Two Elevations And Their Reaction To Deforestation On The Pacific Slope Of Costa Rica, May 2003, Christina Murphy
Distribution Of Stingless Bees (Meliponinae) At Two Elevations And Their Reaction To Deforestation On The Pacific Slope Of Costa Rica, May 2003, Christina Murphy
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The distribution and abundance of Meliponinae and Apidae, as well as the effects of deforestation on Meliponinae, at two elevations on the Pacific slope of Costa Rica were studied. All apids were collected using a pan trap method at 700 m and 1700 m in forest and pasture. The low elevation had higher diversity of Apidae and Meliponinae than the high elevation. These findings are consistent with InBIO (Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad) data on overall elevational trends in Meliponinae and Apidae, yet four species of Meliponinae found in this study add new elevational ranges to InBIO’s records. This study found …
Resource Partitioning And Niche Differentiation Of Nectarivorous Bats In A Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2003, D. Morris Cohen
Resource Partitioning And Niche Differentiation Of Nectarivorous Bats In A Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2003, D. Morris Cohen
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Plant-pollinator interactions are an important part of tropical ecosystem function and diversity. In this paper, I present the results of a month-long study comparing the three nectarivorous Phylostomid bat species, Anoura geoffroyi, Glossophaga commissarisi, and Hylonycteris underwoodi, and the their plant resource base within the cloud forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. Bats were mistnetted, and their pollen loads were removed and later measured for richness, abundance, and diversity. The extent of Niche overlap between the three species was also assessed. I found G. commissarisi to carry the most diverse pollen loads (H'=0.648) and to also have the most consistent floral …

Rolled-Leaf Hispine Herbivory Of Heliconia Spp. (Heliconiaceae) Over An Altitudinal Gradient, May 2003, Sarah Bachman
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Hispine beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Hispinae) are herbivores of the Order Zingiberales (Strong 1977a). In Monteverde area there are three known species of Heliconiaceae (Zingiberales): Heliconia monteverdensis, H. tortuosa, and H. vaginalis (Haber, 1990). H. monteverdensis is a high elevation species (1500 – 1800m) whose range does not overlap with H. vaginalis, a low elevation species (700-1300m). H. tortuosa occurs along the elevational gradient from San Luis (1000m) to the forest behind the Estación Biológica de Monteverde (1760m) where this study was performed, and overlaps in geographical range with the other two species. In this study I looked at patterns of …

The Role Of Height And Flower Symmetry In Bat Pollination Of Mucuna Urens (Papilionaceae), May 2003, Callie Vincent
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The flowers of plants in the tropics have evolved mechanisms that attract bats and ensure that pollination is deposited on the bat for transfer to the next flower (Altringham 1996). In particular, a recent study has shown that flowers in the Mucuna genus attract bats using an acoustic nectar guide (vonHelverson and vonHelverson 1999). In order to test additional factors that could possibly play a role in the pollinator-plant relationship involvingMucuna, inflorescence height, infructescence height, and flower symmetry were studied for fiveMucuna urens patches in the Monteverde (Puntarenas, Costa Rica) cloud forest. A simple regression showed no significant relationship between …

Estimating Community Stability And Ecological Interactions From Time-Series Data, A. R. Ives, B. Dennis, K. L. Cottingham, S. R. Carpenter
Dartmouth Scholarship
Natural ecological communities are continuously buffeted by a varying environment, often making it difficult to measure the stability of communities using concepts requiring the existence of an equilibrium point. Instead of an equilibrium point, the equilibrial state of communities subject to environmental stochasticity is a stationary distribution, which is characterized by means, variances, and other statistical moments. Here, we derive three properties of stochastic multispecies communities that measure different characteristics associated with community stability. These properties can be estimated from multispecies time-series data using first-order multivariate autoregressive (MAR(1)) models. We demonstrate how to estimate the parameters of MAR(1) models and …
An Investigation Of Pre-Nursing And Second-Year Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Perception Of Spirituality, Jacquelyn Kay R. Williams
An Investigation Of Pre-Nursing And Second-Year Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Perception Of Spirituality, Jacquelyn Kay R. Williams
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This pilot study investigated whether spiritual care education is a part of the baccalaureate nursing curriculum at a south Texas university. This study used two standardized scales to compare the pre-nursing students' and senior baccalaureate nursing students' attitude about spirituality at different levels in the nursing program. Two quantitative questionnaires were used to investigate the nursing students' personal spiritual involvement and beliefs and their opinions about the spiritual role of the nurse in meeting patient spiritual needs. No statistically significant differences in the two group's personal spiritual involvement and beliefs were found. Statistically significant differences were found in the opinions …

Africana Womanism In Toni Morrison’ S Sula: The Traditional And Non-Traditional Roles Of Women, Latoya Chante Douglas
Theses (Pre-2016)
Nobel Laureate Literature Toni Morrison is an author who is characterized by her visionary force, which gives life to a vital aspect of American reality. Toni Morrison was born on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio. Morrison is noted for applying the theme of feminism to her novels. More specifically, what feminism ultimately reveals is its indifference with the African Woman, simply because of its racist intentions. Morrison applies the Africana Womanist theory in order to categorize African Women collectively in a manner that will enable them to establish their own identity. . White female feminists fought for all people …
Manganese Toxicity And Oxidative Stress, Johnny Barr
Manganese Toxicity And Oxidative Stress, Johnny Barr
Theses (Pre-2016)
Manganese (Mn), an element that in traces amounts is critical for normal cell function and health, but at high concentrations is causes severe neurodegenerative disease. Mn is a gasoline additive in the United States and thus most chronic exposure to Mn occurs through the environment. Individuals surviving a severe Mn-intoxication often develop neuromotor degenerative conditions, a delayed Parkinson-like disease. The cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in Mn toxicity are poorly understood. The main goal of this project is to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the effects of Mn on mesenceplalic cell culture model system. We used a novel immortalized rat mesenceplalic …

Assemblages Of Salamanders (Family Plethodontidae) In Cwa 305(B) Fully-Supporting, Partially-Supporting, And Non-Supporting Streams On Walden's Ridge, Tennessee, Jason M. Houck
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Surface mining throughout the southeastern United States leading to acid mine drainage (AMD) has caused significant declines in plethodontid salamander communities in AMD affected streams. The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that each navigable body of water in the United States be assigned a use designation and a support status based upon the stream's use designation and how it is affected by local pollution to be published in the CW A 305(b) report. Three streams on the Cumberland Escarpment, outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, representing CWA 305(b) fully-supporting, partiallysupporting, and non-supporting status were surveyed for aquatic plethodontid salamanders. Plethodontid salamanders were …

A number of diseases are due to lysosomal destabilization, which results in damaging cell loss. To investigate the mechanisms of lysosomal cell death, we characterized the cytotoxic action of two widely used quinolone antibiotics: ciprofloxacin (CPX) or norfloxacin (NFX). CPX or NFX plus UV light (NFX*) induce lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP), as detected by the release of cathepsins from lysosomes. Inhibition of the lysosomal accumulation of CPX or NFX suppresses their capacity to induce LMP and to kill cells. CPX- or NFX-triggered LMP results in caspase-independent cell death, with hallmarks of apoptosis such as chromatin condensation and phosphatidylserine exposure on …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The artist discusses her Master of Fine Arts exhibition at East Tennessee State University, Slocumb Galleries, Johnson City, Tennessee, October 28-November 8, 2002. Her exhibition was a personal narrative of her southern upbringing in small town Appalachia as well as a reflection of her inner thoughts and feelings towards feminism, adolescence, sexuality and Barbie. She chose to reference the female form, void of an actual body, implied through clothing. Works are figurative and sculptural and are constructed of copper, sterling and fine silver. They are sculptural hollow vessels, raised, formed, and colored with gesso and prismacolor pencils.
Topics discussed: the …
