The Effect Of Fire Season And Frequency On The Plant Community Of A Restored Tallgrass Prairie., Nathaniel David Birks
The Effect Of Fire Season And Frequency On The Plant Community Of A Restored Tallgrass Prairie., Nathaniel David Birks
Student Work
The effect fire season and frequency was evaluated in 2001 at a 65 ha restored tallgrass prairie in eastern Nebraska using permanent plots established in 1978 and first evaluated in 1979. Treatments included annual and quadrennial burning in spring, summer, and fall as well as unburned plots. Overall, the number of species increased from 28 in 1979 to 30 in 2001, with a shift from ruderal to native species. Shannon diversity (H’) increased significantly across all treatments during this time. Canopy cover of grasses (+19%) and forbs (+18%) increased significantly. However, only forbs showed a significant difference among treatments in …
Putting Francis Howell On The Map, Christopner Matthews Greiner
Putting Francis Howell On The Map, Christopner Matthews Greiner
Theses
One of the main responsibilities of a school system is to train citizens to be productive members of society. To that end, educators are charged with the responsibility of helping students learn knowledge and skills that will be beneficial to their existence beyond high school. In recent years, growing criticism has emerged from business leaders and parents that schools are not doing a good enough job preparing students for life after high school. As a result, educators have worked to implement accountability systems that would raise the stakes for its students. As a result, the development and implementation of exit …

Direct Evidence For A Membrane Deforming Motif In Endophilin: Implications Beyond Synaptic Vesicle Recycling, Khashayar Farsad
Direct Evidence For A Membrane Deforming Motif In Endophilin: Implications Beyond Synaptic Vesicle Recycling, Khashayar Farsad
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Effective neurotransmission is dependent on fast, reproduceable synaptic vesicle recycling. The synaptic vesicle recycling process is a complex event involving both protein-protein, as well as protein-lipid interactions. A central part of the retrieval process of synaptic vesicles lies in the ability of soluble proteins to deform the plasma membrane into a nascent bud which will eventually reform a fully competent synaptic vesicle upon fission. This process involves clathrin-coat proteins, which form a protein scaffold around the vesicle bud, as well as proteins which have more recently been thought to be involved in generating the high curvature membranes present at the …

Nella Larsen’S Passing: The Themes Of Passing And The Tragic Mulatto., Kimberly Barron-Brown
Nella Larsen’S Passing: The Themes Of Passing And The Tragic Mulatto., Kimberly Barron-Brown
Theses (Pre-2016)
Author Nella Larsen's Passing, her second novel, is a work that is closely related to her personal life. Her light skin afforded her the opportunity to probably pass for a white woman. Although she was considered legally black she wanted to be able to identify herself with both races black and white. Since she related some of her own personal ideas, thoughts and beliefs in Passing, the success of the novel was an even greater achievement. In Passing, Larsen relates the themes of passing and the tragic mulatto myth to encapsulate the struggle with the conflicts of American racism and …
Bioactive Phytochemical From Mango And Stone Fruits Seeds, Ehimare Aigbivbalu
Bioactive Phytochemical From Mango And Stone Fruits Seeds, Ehimare Aigbivbalu
Theses (Pre-2016)
In previous years, artificially manufactured chemicals were the main source of pesticide. Though effective, some of these chemicals were notorious for causing environmental problems. However, in recent years, there has been a great interest in the use of naturally produced chemicals (phytochemicals) as a preferred source for pesticides. This is due to the fact that phytochemicals are very environmentally friendly and are known to be specific in their action. In this research, mango seed, plum seed, and nectarine seed were tested for bioactivity. Each seed was separated into pulp and shell and their chemical components extracted using solvent extraction. The …

A Feminist Reading Of Suffering And Perseverance In Stowe’S Uncle Tom’S Cabin, Harper’S Iola Leroy And Minnie’S Sacrifice., Dennis Roy Easington
Theses (Pre-2016)
This thesis explores the topic of Black feminism in the nineteenth century and attempts to chronicle the suffering and perseverance of African-American slaves. The primary sources used in this research include Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin or Life Among the Lowly and Frances E. W. Harper's lola Leroy and Minnie's Sacrifice. These texts establish a central focus on Black feminism; suffering and perseverance are of vital significance in the lives of Cassy, lola and Minie respectively. This study also presents a strong focus on the historical and didactic perspectives in which suffering and perseverance are juxtaposed. Undoubtedly, the authors, …

Examining global effects of toxic metals on gene expression can be useful for elucidating patterns of biological response, discovering underlying mechanisms of toxicity, and identifying candidate metal-specific genetic markers of exposure and response. Using a 1,200 gene nylon array, we examined changes in gene expression following low-dose, acute exposures of cadmium, chromium, arsenic, nickel, or mitomycin C (MMC) in BEAS-2B human bronchial epithelial cells. Total RNA was isolated from cells exposed to 3 M Cd(II) (as cadmium chloride), 10 M Cr(VI) (as sodium dichromate), 3 g/cm2 Ni(II) (as nickel subsulfide), 5 M or 50 M As(III) (as sodium arsenite), or …

Liana Size Class Diversity Across Three Forest Habitats, May 2003, Janelle Burke
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The purpose of this study was to see how forest edge, primary and secondary habitats affect average size and size class diversity of lianas in a cloud forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Three 625 m² sites were studied in primary and secondary forests, and along the edge of a forest. Exhaustive sampling of lianas was taken of four continuous plots within each habitat: all individuals were measured for PBH (perimeter at breast height). The primary forest was the most diverse according to the Shannon- Weiner index of diversity (H’ = 0.918), and the oldest judging by mean perimeter (3.87 ± …
Haying And Grazing Herbicide Restrictions For Pasture And Crp, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke
Haying And Grazing Herbicide Restrictions For Pasture And Crp, Leon J. Wrage, Darrell L. Deneke
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Residue tolerances are established for grazing and harvesting hay. The interval between application and harvest may specify lactating dairy or slaughter. In situations where CRP is approved for haying or grazing, the field may have been spot treated for noxious weeds. If the interval is restrictive for hay harvest, it may be possible to omit those patches from the harvest.
Physiological And Biochemical Aspects Of Agrobacterium-Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Interactions, David L. Parrott Jr.
Physiological And Biochemical Aspects Of Agrobacterium-Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Interactions, David L. Parrott Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Agrobacterium tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes are the causal agents of gall or hairy root disease, but normally the bacteria do not cause disease in wheat. However, both bacteria grew without inhibition when exposed to intact or wounded wheat roots or embryos, and they colonized wheat root surfaces to levels similar to dicotyledonous plants. A. tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes induced 23% cell death after a 1-h exposure to wheat embryo cells grown in 7.4 mM O2, while the extent of cell death at 2.1 mM O2 was 8%. Contact with A. tumefaciens or A. rhizogenes caused cultured wheat …

Qualitative Measurements Of Occupant Comfort In Five U.S. Schools, Anthony Miller
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) performed indoor air quality studies in five U.S. schools during energy retrofits during 1997-98. Four EPA reports and three Environmental Health and Engineering, Inc. (EH&E) reports illustrated the indoor environmental quality before and after heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) retrofits at specific elementary schools in Texas, Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey, and California. Selected comfort, environmental, physical, and occupant response data were collected in randomly selected areas over a one–week, five–school day monitoring period for each of these schools.
The EPA studied indoor air quality (IAQ) and occupant comfort using an EPA Indoor Environmental …

Fluctuations In Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) Counts At Three Lower Columbia River Spawning Sites, Eric Michael Loomis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Several hypotheses were developed to explore the pronounced increase in Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) returning to spawning grounds at the Cowlitz, Kalama, and Lewis Rivers, three tributaries of the lower Columbia River. The study was conducted using data compiled over a ten-year span from 1991-2001. Preliminary indications are that trends in climate are linked to these increases, with the absence of El Niño events and fluctuations in winter precipitation as likely explanations of these phenomena. The unique nature of Chinook life cycles causes them to utilize a variety of habitats that require ideal conditions for maximum survival rates. Correlations between …
Water Quality Remediation At The Abandoned Jones-Kincaid Mine Site, Pyramid Mining District, Washoe County, Nevada, Si-Ok Choi
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the cost and efficiency of four remediation methods, natural attenuation, permeable reactive barriers, pump and treat systems, and bioremediation, and to determine the best suitable method for preventing further environmental degradation from the abandoned Jones-Kincaid Mine (JKM), located within the Pyramid Mining District, Washoe County, Nevada.
Problems from abandoned mine sites may be divided into four types: water quality, public safety, economic concerns, and scenic interests. The foremost problem is the effect of pollution on water quality. Acid run-off and precipitation may be spread hundreds of miles and influence drinking water sources …

Efficient I/O For Computational Grid Applications, Ron A. Oldfield
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
High-performance computing increasingly occurs on "computational grids" composed of heterogeneous and geographically distributed systems of computers, networks, and storage devices that collectively act as a single "virtual" computer. A key challenge in this environment is to provide efficient access to data distributed across remote data servers. This dissertation explores some of the issues associated with I/O for wide-area distributed computing and describes an I/O system, called Armada, with the following features: a framework to allow application and dataset providers to flexibly compose graphs of processing modules that describe the distribution, application interfaces, and processing required of the dataset before or …
Community Factors That Correlate With Middle-Adolescent Antisocial Behavior, Olga Kamenchuk
Community Factors That Correlate With Middle-Adolescent Antisocial Behavior, Olga Kamenchuk
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many adolescents nowadays display antisocial behavior. A large number of theories explaining origin of antisocial behavior have been developed in the last several centuries. The current study utilizes the "ecological" theoretical framework that allows the researcher to consider multiple ecological systems in which individuals operate and to focus on the community factors influencing antisocial behavior.
The researcher used part of the Prevention Needs Assessment survey to identify which community risk and protective factors correlate with middle-adolescent antisocial behavior. Analysis included intercluster, cluster-item correlations, and partial correlations. Results indicated correlations between antisocial behavior and a number of community risk factors, and …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of a cubic autocatalytic chemical reaction system u1,t = u1,xx − uα1 uβ2, u2,t = du2,xx+ uα1 uβ2 with non-negative initial data, where the exponents α,β satisfy 1<α,βd>0 is the Lewis number. Our purpose is to study the global dynamics of solutions under mild decay of initial data as |x|→∞. We show the exact large time behaviour of solutions which is universal.
