A Culture Of Relationships: Early Care For Italian And American Children, Carolyn P. Edwards May 2003

A Culture Of Relationships: Early Care For Italian And American Children, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

A culture of childhood is a shared vision – an agreed upon vision – of the needs and rights of children, including ideas about how the people of the community can collectively nurture them and at the same time be renewed by them. In other words, it is a set of values, beliefs, and practices that people have created to guide their way of nurturing young children and their families. The vision is about investing in young children and investing in the supports and relationships that children need to learn and grow, both for the reason that children carry our …

Parent-Adolescent Communication About Sex: Retrospective Reports By Latino College Students, Marcela Raffaelli, Stephanie Green May 2003

Parent-Adolescent Communication About Sex: Retrospective Reports By Latino College Students, Marcela Raffaelli, Stephanie Green

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Latina female (n = 97) and Latino male (n = 69) college students (M age =21.4 years) completed self-report surveys regarding family of origin experiences, including sexual communication with parents while growing up. Latino parents of this comparatively highly educated sample tended to use direct rather than indirect strategies for communicating about sexuality with their children. Young women reported higher levels of sexual communication with mothers while growing up than did young men, and respondents reported less communication with fathers than mothers. Among young women, sexual communication with mother was positively associated with non-Mexican origin and negatively associated with having …

Surgery Versus Pharmacotherapy Of Benign Thyroid Diseases, Nidal A. Younes, Abla M. Albsoul May 2003

Surgery Versus Pharmacotherapy Of Benign Thyroid Diseases, Nidal A. Younes, Abla M. Albsoul

Saudi Medical Journal

Surgical management of benign thyroid diseases (BTDs) has been a topic of interest and confusion for many years. Almost 80% of thyroidectomies at an average endocrine surgical unit are carried out for BTDs. Resistance to surgical intervention in BTDs has been based on the belief that increased complication rate is inherent in its use, this is despite the potential advantages in terms of confirming the benign nature of the lesion, controlling the disease, and relieving local symptoms of large neck mass. Benign thyroid diseases are more likely to occur in middle-aged women living in iodine deficient areas, or have a …

Brady Behind Bars: The Prosecutor's Disclosure Obligations Regarding Dna In The Post-Conviction Arena, Brian T. Kohn May 2003

Brady Behind Bars: The Prosecutor's Disclosure Obligations Regarding Dna In The Post-Conviction Arena, Brian T. Kohn

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article argues that the constitutional obligation of prosecutors to disclose exculpatory evidence, as established by Brady v. Maryland and its progeny, extends beyond a defendant's conviction and applies to postconviction DNA testing requests. It asserts that denying access to such testing violates both constitutional rights and the ethical duties of prosecutors, who are tasked with seeking justice rather than merely securing convictions. The analysis highlights the conflict in federal courts regarding the applicability of Brady to postconviction DNA testing and advocates for a broader interpretation of the doctrine to ensure innocence is not wrongly imprisoned.

The Garr Family Saga The Connecting Power Of Oral Narrative, Margaret Garr Jaggi May 2003

The Garr Family Saga The Connecting Power Of Oral Narrative, Margaret Garr Jaggi

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

When I was a child, my mother often told me a "true" story about a beautiful Shoshone maiden who married a handsome American cowboy. The setting was the 1850s in the fertile valley of Cache County, Utah. The man's name was John Turner Garr and the woman was called Susie. This young couple was my paternal great-great grandparents. Together they lived a life that defied their disparate cultures. I envisioned them, young, wild, and free; he, dressed in buckskin leggings, riding among the Shoshone men; she, in soft doeskin supporting a papoose on her back. The idyllic life of my …

The sludge is conveyed through a belt press for dewatering prior to incineration. The dewatered sludge is sent to a multiple hearth incinerator with a secondary combustion chamber/afterburner for thermal …

Life After Death Row: Preventing Wrongful Capital Convictions And Restoring Innocence After Exoneration, Jean C. Blackerby May 2003

Life After Death Row: Preventing Wrongful Capital Convictions And Restoring Innocence After Exoneration, Jean C. Blackerby

Vanderbilt Law Review

In Gregg v. Georgia, the Supreme Court overturned its ruling in Furman v. Georgia and held that the death penalty, as administered by the states, was not per se "cruel and unusual punishment" in violation of the Eighth Amendment.' Yet errors continue to occur at an alarming rate in the capital punishment system-over one hundred death row inmates have been released pursuant to evidence of actual innocence since 1973. Indeed, the number of death row exonerations has been steadily increasing in recent years.

Of those exonerations, DNA testing played a substantial role in twelve. Many more have benefited from the …

Holding To Basics And Investing For Growth: Cuban Education And The Economic Crisis Of The 1990’S, Miren Uriarte May 2003

Holding To Basics And Investing For Growth: Cuban Education And The Economic Crisis Of The 1990’S, Miren Uriarte

Gastón Institute Publications

Since the middle of the 1980’s, processes of economic restructuring have led to large changes in the landscape of educational and social policy in most of Latin America. Faced with severe economic crisis, Latin American nations have sought structural transformations that have redefined the role of government in the provision of social benefits and sharply reduced expenditures through wholesale privatization and deep reductions in remaining government-sponsored programs. Between 1980 and 1990, expenditures in education as a percent of total government expenditures fell in most countries in Latin America, affecting especially public education, the only recourse for the poor. By 1996, …

Coping With Infertility: A Qualitative Study Of The Infertile Experience And How Others Can Help, Carolyn A. Senchuk-Lavergne

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study is to qualitatively examine the experience of infertility from the individual's perspective and how friends, family, and counselors can assist these individuals. Six individuals were surveyed about their experiences concerning their infertility. The male and female partners were surveyed individually in order to preserve the phenomenological nature of the study. Results showed that the experience of infertility was consistently identified in five domains: infertility decreases self-worth, it is all-encompassing, the downfall of treatments, angry and resentful feelings, and concern for spouse. Support systems were identified in three domains: friends/family, outside resources, and counseling. This …

Predicting Mountain Pine Beetle Development With The Extended Von Foerster Model, Jeffrey Tullis Leek May 2003

Predicting Mountain Pine Beetle Development With The Extended Von Foerster Model, Jeffrey Tullis Leek

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) represents a significant threat to ponderosa pine and lodgepole pine stands in the western United States, and has the potential to threaten commercially valuable jack pine in both the United States and Canada. The success of the mountain pine beetle is based on synchronization of developmental events to time cold-hardened life stages for extreme winter temperatures and to facilitate mass attack and overwhelm the defenses of the host. This paper presents a solution methodology for an extended McKendrick - von Foerster model for the development of the mountain pine beetle in varying …

Development Of An Active Tether, Eric Barta, Chris Kruzel, Mason Mcintire, Laura Wille May 2003

Development Of An Active Tether, Eric Barta, Chris Kruzel, Mason Mcintire, Laura Wille

Engineering Senior Design Reports

The purpose of this text is to describe the design and testing of an active tether capable of assisting a search and rescue robot. In order to communicate with the robot in a search and rescue environment a tether is a viable option to transmit power, control, and even life support for victims to the robot. However, applying the tether in this environment opens the robot to new obstacles involving this support. The tether is capable of snagging itself on multiple contact points in the search and rescue zone that can ultimately hinder the robot from moving further. The goal …

Fire, Soil, Native Species And Control Of Phalaris Arundinacea In A Wetland Recovery Project., Richard Douglas Foster May 2003

Fire, Soil, Native Species And Control Of Phalaris Arundinacea In A Wetland Recovery Project., Richard Douglas Foster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Southern Appalachian Phalaris arundinacea control was investigated by: 1) correlating cover and species richness with soil characteristics across transects; 2) burning and herbicide use to determine conditions facilitating native plant establishment; and 3) hemi-parasitic Pedicularis lanceolata tested as a biological control.

Phalaris cover was correlated with subsoil consolidation; areas without Phalaris had consolidated subsoil while Phalaris at >50% cover established on loose soil. Phalaris cover inhibited species richness (r2=0.78). No soil characteristic predicted species richness.

Herbicide reduced Phalaris cover and aerial biomass by 23% and 63% respectively, compared to controls. Burning was ineffective. Two summers after herbicide Phalaris …
