The Utility Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Inferences Of Population History, Robb T. Brumfield, Peter Beerli, Deborah A. Nickerson, Scott V. Edwards May 2003

The Utility Of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms In Inferences Of Population History, Robb T. Brumfield, Peter Beerli, Deborah A. Nickerson, Scott V. Edwards

Faculty Publications

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) represent the most widespread type of sequence variation in genomes, yet they have only emerged recently as valuable genetic markers for revealing the evolutionary history of populations. Their occurrence throughout the genome also makes them ideal for analyses of speciation and historical demography, especially in light of recent theory suggesting that many unlinked nuclear loci are needed to estimate population genetic parameters with statistical confidence. In spite of having lower variation compared with microsatellites, SNPs should make the comparison of genomic diversities and histories of different species (the core goal of comparative biogeography) more straightforward than …

Linkage For Bmi At 3q27 Region Confirmed In An African-American Population, Amy Luke, Xiaodong Wu, Xiaofeng Zhu, Donghui Kan, Yan Su, Richard Cooper May 2003

Linkage For Bmi At 3q27 Region Confirmed In An African-American Population, Amy Luke, Xiaodong Wu, Xiaofeng Zhu, Donghui Kan, Yan Su, Richard Cooper

Faculty Publications

Significant and suggestive linkage for BMI on 3q27 has been reported by several groups, including our own study in African Americans. To further establish the linkage evidence on 3q27, we recruited an independent African-American sample comprising 545 individuals in 128 families. We genotyped 15 short tandem-repeat markers evenly spaced in the 112 cM region around the peak on 3q27 identified in our earlier study. Multipoint linkage analysis by GENEHUNTER2 gave the maximum logarithm of odds (LOD) score 2.4 at map position 188 cM in this sample. When we combined the two samples, linkage evidence was increased to a maximum LOD …

Associations Between Hypertension And Genes In The Renin-Angiotensin System, Xiaofeng Zhu, Yen Pei C. Chang, Denise Yan, Alan Weder, Richard Cooper, Amy Luke, Donghui Kan, Aravinda Chakravarti

Faculty Publications

The genes of the renin-angiotensin system have been subjected to intense molecular scrutiny in cardiovascular disease studies, but their contribution to risk is still uncertain. In this study, we sampled 192 African American and 153 European American families (602 and 608 individuals, respectively) to evaluate the contribution of variations in genes that encode renin-angiotensin system components of susceptibility to hypertension. We genotyped 25 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the renin-angiotensin system genes ACE, AGT, AGTR1, and REN. The family-based transmission/disequilibrium test was performed with each single-nucleotide polymorphism and with the multilocus haplotypes. Two individual single-nucleotide polymorphisms were significantly associated with hypertension among …

Worldview As A Key To Understanding Spiritual Warfare With The Emphasis On Sanctification And Evangelism, Albert Kwamena Essandoh

College of Theology and Ministry Dissertations, Projects, & Theses

An examination of current literary works on spiritual warfare within this decade shows that there has been a struggle in understanding the issues that evolve under this subject. Missiologists have presented reports that baffle western theologians; however. these phenomena are not new to the non-westem reader, and they persist. Most western theologians who have not encountered these phenomena discount these experiences, presenting arguments from a sanctification point of view.

Renowned contemporary scholars whose perspectives on worldviews, sanctification, and evangelism contribute to this research include Peter Wagner, Clinton Arnold, Derek Tidball, Howard Ervin, James Sire, John Stott, Andrew W. Hoffecker, Russell …

Public Independent Fact-Finding: A Trust-Generating Institution For An Age Of Corporate Illegitimacy And Public Mistrust, R. William Ide Iii, Douglas H. Yarn

Vanderbilt Law Review

Public distrust in the wake of corporate scandals caused corporate legitimacy crises for the companies involved and for the marketplace as a whole. The loss of trust has contributed to an environment in which traditional responses to allegations of wrongdoing and incompetence are less effective. Alternatively, organizations engage in "Public independent fact-finding" ("PIFF") by hiring public figures with reputations for integrity to conduct internal investigations and to report their findings to the public. This Article describes the role played by trust, reputation, and social legitimacy in the health of organizations and examines corporate legitimacy crises and traditional responses. Identifying factors …

Artifacts And Cultures-Of-Use In Intercultural Communication, Steven L. Thorne May 2003

Artifacts And Cultures-Of-Use In Intercultural Communication, Steven L. Thorne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article develops a conceptual framework for understanding how intercultural communication, mediated by cultural artifacts (i.e., Internet communication tools), creates compelling, problematic, and surprising conditions for additional language learning. Three case studies of computer-mediated intercultural engagement draw together correlations between discursive orientation, communicative modality, communicative activity, and emergent interpersonal dynamics. These factors contribute to varying qualities and quantities of participation in the intercultural partnerships. Case one, "Clashing Frames of Expectation -- Differing Cultures-of-Use," suggests that the cultures-of-use of Internet communication tools, their perceived existence and on-going construction as distinctive cultural artifacts, differs interculturally just as communicative genre, pragmatics, and institutional …

Peregrine Falcon Eggs: Egg Size, Hatchling Sex, And Clutch Sex Ratios, William Burnham, Calvin Sandfort, James R. Belthoff

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Eggs (n = 367) collected from wild Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus anatum) nests between 1976 and 1990 in Colorado and New Mexico were artificially incubated and hatched. We retrospectively examined these data for variation in egg length, breadth, and initial mass of hatchlings to resolve questions about relationships among egg size, chick size, and sex; and egg size related to first and second clutches and years. Egg length and breadth were significantly related to chick mass at hatching. Neither egg size nor hatchling mass were related to sex. Egg breadth slightly increased and then decreased over the years eggs were …

Gene Expression Profiling In Prepubertal And Adult Male Mice Using Cdna And Oligonucleotide Microarrays, Lisa Marie Tomascik-Cheeseman May 2003

Gene Expression Profiling In Prepubertal And Adult Male Mice Using Cdna And Oligonucleotide Microarrays, Lisa Marie Tomascik-Cheeseman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Variations in gene expression are the basis of differences in cell and tissue function, response to DNA damaging agents, susceptibility to genetic disease, and cellular differentiation. The purpose of this dissertation research was to characterize variation in basal gene expression among adult mouse tissues for selected stress response, DNA repair and damage control genes and to utilize variation in temporal gene expression patterns to identify candidate genes associated with germ cell differentiation from mitosis through meiosis in the prepubertal mouse testis. To accomplish these goals, high throughput analyses of gene expression were performed using custom cDNA and random oligonucleotide microarrays. …

Molecular Cytogenetic Evaluation Of Uveal Melanoma Cell Lines And Archival Tissue, Jason Scott White May 2003

Molecular Cytogenetic Evaluation Of Uveal Melanoma Cell Lines And Archival Tissue, Jason Scott White

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Uveal melanoma is the most common intraocular tumor in adults and often results in unilateral blindness and/or death. Previous cytogenetic characterizations of this tumor have consistently revealed chromosomal abnormalities involving chromosomes 3, 6, and 8; reports of other abnormalities vary in frequency. We further defined cytogenetic abnormalities of this tumor using molecular cytogenetic techniques on 10 uveal malignant melanoma cell lines and 100 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumors.;The synthesis of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) and spectral karyotyping (SKY) results revealed that chromosomal rearrangement plays a significant role in the generation of DNA sequence copy number abnormalities throughout the genome, but none …

Effects Of Artificial Neural Networks Characterization On Prediction Of Diesel Engine Emissions, Azadeh Tehranian May 2003

Effects Of Artificial Neural Networks Characterization On Prediction Of Diesel Engine Emissions, Azadeh Tehranian

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

More than a century after its invention, diesel remains the fuel of choice for buses and freight trucks. Diesel exhaust contains three gases that are regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as particulate matter (PM). There is a societal need both to lower emissions and to predict or model emissions more accurately for inventory purposes. Engine modeling, and real time control are the most indispensable steps towards lowering engine emissions, and it is argued that this modeling can be achieved by implementation of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). Effects of ANN design, architecture, and learning parameters …

To determine the extent of computer use among education faculty, a three-part survey was developed. It including …

A Semiparametric Regression Model For Oligonucleotide Arrays, Jianhua Hu, Guosheng Yin May 2003

A Semiparametric Regression Model For Oligonucleotide Arrays, Jianhua Hu, Guosheng Yin

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A semiparametric model incorporating the spline smoothing technique is proposed to study oligonucleotide gene expression data. No specific parametric functional form is assumed for mismatch probe intensities, which allows much more flexibility in the fitted model. The new approach improves the model fitting, hence the estimation of expression indexes. The method is applied to a data set of 18 HuGeneFL arrays.

Phenotypic Plasticity And Interactions Among Plants, Ragan M. Callaway, Steven C. Pennings, Christina L. Richards May 2003

Phenotypic Plasticity And Interactions Among Plants, Ragan M. Callaway, Steven C. Pennings, Christina L. Richards

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We know a great deal about the plastic responses of plant phenotypes to the abiotic and biotic environment, but very little about the consequences of phenotypic plasticity for plant communities. In other words, we know that plant traits can vary widely for a given genotype, but we know little about the importance of trait-mediated interactions (TMI) among plants. Here, we discuss three major factors that affect the expression of phenotypic plasticity: variation in the abiotic environment, variation in the presence or identity of neighbors, and variation in herbivory. We consider how plastic responses to these factors might affect interactions among …
