Sorority And Stigmatized Women In Wollstonecraft's 'Wrongs Of Woman' And Gaskell's 'Ruth', Jennifer Lee Tilbury May 2003

Sorority And Stigmatized Women In Wollstonecraft's 'Wrongs Of Woman' And Gaskell's 'Ruth', Jennifer Lee Tilbury

English

This paper explores sorority and stigmatized women in Mary Wollstonecraft's unfinished novel 'Wrongs of Woman' and Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Ruth.' The paper begins with a discussion of women's relationships in literature and the ways in which these representations have been limited by a dominant patriarchal literary tradition. The paper is organized to show the influence Wollstonecraft had on Gaskell's work, with particular regards to the characters' relationships with 'fallen women.' In each text, the women struggle against literary and social plots that threaten to overpower their identities. Wollstonecraft's Jemima is re-worked into Gaskell's Jemima, a woman who challenges and rejects the …

Effects Of Fish Wheels On Fall Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta): Non-Esterified Fatty Acids And Plasma Indices Of Stress, Peter Mallon Cleary May 2003

Effects Of Fish Wheels On Fall Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus Keta): Non-Esterified Fatty Acids And Plasma Indices Of Stress, Peter Mallon Cleary

Fisheries

The effect of tagging and capture on plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose, lactate, chloride, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) in chum salmon was investigated. Adult chum salmon were captured in August-September 2000 and 2001 with a fish wheel on the lower Kantishna River. Tagged and untagged fish were subsequently captured on the lower Toklat River and sampled for blood. Tagged fish (males and females) at the Toklat recovery fish wheels had lower (P <0.04) plasma cortisol concentrations than untagged fish. Glucose concentrations were lower (P = 0.03) in tagged than untagged males but did not differ between tagged and untagged females. Lactate and chloride concentrations did not differ between tagged and untagged fish. Tagged chum salmon captured at the Toklat River recovery wheels had lower concentrations of NEFA (P = 0.02). Taken together, these results suggest there is a metabolic cost from capture and tagging using fish wheels.

Outbreeding Depression In Hybrids Between Spatially Separated Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha) Populations: Marine Survival, Homing Ability, And Variability In Family Size, Sara E. Gilk May 2003

Outbreeding Depression In Hybrids Between Spatially Separated Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha) Populations: Marine Survival, Homing Ability, And Variability In Family Size, Sara E. Gilk

Fisheries

Hybridization between distinct populations of salmon can cause fitness loss (outbreeding depression), and may result in reduced survival. The erosion of fitness-related traits such as homing ability and change in family size distribution may underlie reduced survival. Out breeding depression was investigated in two independent experiments that made hybrids between geographically separated and genetically divergent pink salmon populations. Control crosses were made from male and female Auke Creek (Southeast Alaska) pink salmon and hybrid crosses were between Auke Creek females and Pillar Creek (Kodiak Island, about 1000km away) males. Parentage assignment from microsatellite analysis improved estimates of survival and straying, …

Influence Of Hydrological Processes On The Spatial And Temporal Variation In Spawning Habitat Quality For Two Chum Salmon Stocks In Interior Alaska, Scott H. Maclean May 2003

Influence Of Hydrological Processes On The Spatial And Temporal Variation In Spawning Habitat Quality For Two Chum Salmon Stocks In Interior Alaska, Scott H. Maclean

Fisheries

I investigated the hydrological mechanisms that influence spatial and temporal variability in incubation habitat quality for summer- and fall-run chum salmon. The intragravel habitat was characterized by measuring water velocity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO). Habitat quality was characterized by determining the survival of eggs in gravel filled baskets. Summer-run egg survival was greatest in a zone of upwelling produced by hydraulic gradients between the main Chena River and a slough. Water took approximately one month to make this trip and microbial activity likely reduced the concentration of DO considerably. As a consequence of these processes, there was considerable spatial …

Assessment And Prediction Of Electroshocked-Induced Injury In North American Fishes, Farland Michael Holliman May 2003

Assessment And Prediction Of Electroshocked-Induced Injury In North American Fishes, Farland Michael Holliman

Fisheries

Electrofishing has served as an efficient method for scientific sampling of freshwater fishes since the mid-1900s, but it has become apparent since the 1990's that electroshock can cause fish injury. Electroshock-induced fish injury (damage to hard or soft tissues), which is primarily manifested as vertebral fracture or hemorrhage (broken blood vessels) along the backbone, can be a critical determinant of fish survival. The ability to predict factors influencing fish injury rate (the proportion of. injured fish in a sample) would be very useful to biologists. To test the null hypothesis of no effect of electrical waveform (W), voltage gradient (E), …

Interpretation Of Radarsat Sar Scenes Of Sagwon Alaska, To Establish Temporal, Spatial And Physical Active Layer Behavior, Joseph Thomas Lovick May 2003

Interpretation Of Radarsat Sar Scenes Of Sagwon Alaska, To Establish Temporal, Spatial And Physical Active Layer Behavior, Joseph Thomas Lovick

Geosciences

Radarsat SAR images of the Kuparuk Basin in North Alaska can be used to describe the timing and characteristics of the seasonal freeze-thaw cycle and the spatial distribution of two types of Arctic Tundra. The freezing of the ground surface; decreases backscatter brightness by 3dB allowing the date of freeze-up and thaw to be established. Using Empirical Orthogonal Functions on amplitude images allows the subtle change in the brightness (during winter) of different tundra types to be enhanced, which provides a technique for discriminating between areas of Moist Acidic Tundra and Moist Non-acidic Tundra. The sand to clay ratio affects …

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Sinking Particles In The Southeast Bering Sea, Stacy Lynn Smith May 2003

Temporal And Spatial Variability Of Sinking Particles In The Southeast Bering Sea, Stacy Lynn Smith

Marine Biology

The factors affecting the timing, quantity and fate of southeastern Bering Sea primary production, including coupling to higher trophic levels, were investigated via sinking particles collected using sediment traps. Stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition and lipid composition of zooplankton and sinking particles were measured for middle (M2) and outer (M3) shelf samples collected during 1997-2000. The quantity collected by the M2 sediment trap was high in late summer and fall, as well as during spring blooms, and was much greater than that collected at M3. M2 zooplankton and trap samples were enriched in ¹⁵N and ¹³C over those from …

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning: The Relationship Between Alexandrium Abundance And Psp Toxins On Kodiak Island, Alaska, Julie A. Matweyou May 2003

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning: The Relationship Between Alexandrium Abundance And Psp Toxins On Kodiak Island, Alaska, Julie A. Matweyou

Marine Biology

Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) events have severe negative impacts on Alaska commercial shellfish fisheries as well as recreational and subsistence harvests. This study, designed to improve existing PSP monitoring programs, involved the use of a rapid sandwich hybridization assay to detect and quantify the relative abundance of Alexandrium catenella based on species-specific LSU rRNA targeted oligonucleotide probes. Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) toxicity, expressed as saxitoxin equivalents, was determined using the ³H-Saxitoxin receptor binding assay. Shellfish toxicity was relatively low in both 2000 and 2001 compared to historically high values on Kodiak, but exhibited pronounced late spring and late summer peaks, …

Effects Of Commercial Otter Trawling On Essential Fish Habitat Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Eloise Brown May 2003

Effects Of Commercial Otter Trawling On Essential Fish Habitat Of The Southeastern Bering Sea Shelf, Eloise Brown

Marine Biology

Sediment properties and benthic community composition in areas subject to commercial bottom trawling were compared to control areas in a shallow sandy habitat of the southeastern Bering Sea. The top 3 cm sediments in the fished area were slightly better sorted, less variable, and contained fewer finer grains than those of the closed area. Infaunal species assemblages were distinct. The fished area was characterized by reduced infauna richness and biomass, but abundance and diversity were similar to the closed area. No shift in means of any sediment parameter were detected after experimental trawling, but significant increases in variability were observed …

Epidemiological Survey On The Prevalence Of Nosocomial Infections Caused By Drug Resistant Bacteria, Jelita Ann Green May 2003

Epidemiological Survey On The Prevalence Of Nosocomial Infections Caused By Drug Resistant Bacteria, Jelita Ann Green

Theses (Pre-2016)

Nosocomial infections have been recognized for over a century as a critical problem affecting the quality of health care and a principal source of adverse health care outcomes. The National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System defines a nosocomial infection as (1) a localized or systemic condition that results from adverse reaction to the presence of an infectious agent(s) or its toxin(s) and (2) that was not present or incubating at the time a patient is admitted to a hospital. Today, nosocomial infections affect over 2 million patients annually in the United States at a cost in excess of $4.5 billion (Hormaeche, …

Migrant Stopover Ecology And Resident Resilience After Hurricane Iris In A Neotropical Bird Community, Andrew Bryant Johnson May 2003

Migrant Stopover Ecology And Resident Resilience After Hurricane Iris In A Neotropical Bird Community, Andrew Bryant Johnson

Biological Sciences

I conducted two avian ecology studies in southern Belize. I examined mass gains by Nearctic-Neotropic migrants in forest near the Gulf of Honduras, a potential ecological barrier to migration. Condition indices (mass/wing chord or tail length) were used to estimate net diel mass gains in migrant species. Ten migrant species apparently were fattening at the site, but some species not fattening at the site had accumulated fat loads elsewhere, and this region appears to provide important resources for transient migrants. I also studied the resilience of a marked resident bird community after Hurricane Iris severely altered the habitat. Given the …

Thermoregulating Ability And Minimum Flight Temperature In Interior Alaska Dragonflies (Odonata: Anisoptera), Todd Sformo May 2003

Thermoregulating Ability And Minimum Flight Temperature In Interior Alaska Dragonflies (Odonata: Anisoptera), Todd Sformo

Biological Sciences

The use of operative environmental temperature (Te) has been a major advance in the study of thermal ecology. I review the use of operative temperature in thermal biology with an emphasis on insects. Then I use data from dragonflies in Interior Alaska (Odonata: Anisoptera) to compare the efficacy of operative and ambient temperature when examining thermoregulating ability. I conclude that although the use of Te may provide more accurate measures of thermoregulation under specific environmental conditions, the use of ambient temperature usually leads to the same conclusions about thermoregulating ability. I next examine the relationships between thermoregulating ability, minimum flight …

A Noise Filtering Method Using Neural Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng May 2003

A Noise Filtering Method Using Neural Networks, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng

Faculty Publications

During the data collecting and labeling process it is possible for noise to be introduced into a data set. As a result, the quality of the data set degrades and experiments and inferences derived from the data set become less reliable. In this paper we present an algorithm, called ANR (automatic noise reduction), as a filtering mechanism to identify and remove noisy data items whose classes have been mislabeled. The underlying mechanism behind ANR is based on a framework of multi-layer artificial neural networks. ANR assigns each data item a soft class label in the form of a class probability …

Linear Models For Microarray Data Analysis: Hidden Similarities And Differences, M. Kathleen Kerr May 2003

Linear Models For Microarray Data Analysis: Hidden Similarities And Differences, M. Kathleen Kerr

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In the past several years many linear models have been proposed for analyzing two-color microarray data. As presented in the literature, many of these models appear dramatically different. However, many of these models are reformulations of the same basic approach to analyzing microarray data. This paper demonstrates the equivalence of some of these models. Attention is directed at choices in microarray data analysis that have a larger impact on the results than the choice of linear model.

Trigeminal Somatosensory Innervation Of The Head Of A Teleost Fish With Particular Reference To Nociception, Lynne U. Sneddon May 2003

Trigeminal Somatosensory Innervation Of The Head Of A Teleost Fish With Particular Reference To Nociception, Lynne U. Sneddon

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

Trigeminal somatosensory receptors have not been characterised in teleost fish and studies in elasmobranchs have failed to identify nociceptors. The present study examined the trigeminal nerve of a teleost fish, the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to determine what types of somatosensory receptors were present on the head of the trout specifically searching for nociceptors. Single unit recordings were made from receptive fields on the head of the fish innervated by the trigeminal nerve. Each receptive field was tested for sensitivity to mechanical, thermal and chemical stimulation. Five different receptor types were found: fast adapting receptors responding to mechanical stimulation; slowly …

Evaluating The Effects Of Enhanced Processivity And Metal Ions On Translesion Dna Replication Catalyzed By The Bacteriophage T4 Dna Polymerase, Edmunds Z. Reineks, Anthony J. Berdis May 2003

Evaluating The Effects Of Enhanced Processivity And Metal Ions On Translesion Dna Replication Catalyzed By The Bacteriophage T4 Dna Polymerase, Edmunds Z. Reineks, Anthony J. Berdis

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The fidelity of DNA replication is achieved in a multiplicative process encompassing nucleobase selection and insertion, removal of misinserted nucleotides by exonuclease activity, and enzyme dissociation from primer/templates that are misaligned due to mispairing. In this study, we have evaluated the effect of altering these kinetic processes on the dynamics of translesion DNA replication using the bacteriophage T4 replication apparatus as a model system. The effect of enhancing the processivity of the T4 DNA polymerase, gp43, on translesion DNA replication was evaluated using a defined in vitro assay system. While the T4 replicase (gp43 in complex with gp45) can perform …

Collection Development Of Non-Christian Religious Holiday Books In Elementary School Libraries, Kelly Bigley Craig May 2003

Collection Development Of Non-Christian Religious Holiday Books In Elementary School Libraries, Kelly Bigley Craig

Theses and Dissertations

While many Christian holiday books for children are widely reviewed and available from mainstream publishers, it is more difficult to find and evaluate books about non-Christian holidays. Elementary library collections may under-represent non-Christian religious books because of a lack of school library media specialists' personal knowledge about non-Christian holidays. This study surveyed school library media specialists through a written questionnaire about the variety and size of their library's current collection of non-fiction books about non-Christian religious holidays, and determined how school library media specialists approach collection development in this area. The sample and population consisted of 124 elementary public school …

Miniaturized Fluorescence Biosensor For Studying Neuronal Events, Thuvan Nguyen May 2003

Miniaturized Fluorescence Biosensor For Studying Neuronal Events, Thuvan Nguyen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

When developing new techniques to analyze neuro-chemical microenvironments, it is important to realize the incredible variability in the cellular content and the response to stimulation between cells and within a single cell. Conventional analysis techniques yield an average result to describe the content and function of cells. This approach often misses important information since the onset of pathological conditions is always initiated in a small number of cells. New minimally invasive single cell analysis techniques are required for single cell studies in order to gain new insights and understanding of cells' functions. The objective of my Ph.D. study was to …
