Melting Processes And Fluid And Sediment Transport Rates Along The Alaska-Aleutian Arc From An Integrated U-Th-Ra-Be Isotope Study, Rhiannon George, Simon Turner, Chris Hawkesworth, Julie Morris, Chris Nye, Jeffrey G. Ryan, Shu-Hui Zheng
Geology Faculty Publications
A comprehensive data set for young lavas erupted along the Alaska-Aleutian arc is used to examine how fluid and sediment transport rates and melting processes vary in response to systematic changes in subduction rate and dip along the arc and across the ocean-continent boundary. Positive correlations between convergence rate, volcano volume, and 238U excesses suggest that magmatic output is closely linked to the size of the fluid flux which occurred <10 kyr prior to eruption. Sediment-sensitive tracers like Th/Nb, Ce/Ce*, and 10Be/9Be also increase with convergence rate. However, the inferred 10Be/9Be ratio of this component is low relative to that in the incoming sediments, …10>

Bcl-2 Family Members Inhibit Oxidative Stress-Induced Programmed Cell Death In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Shao-Rong Chen, David Dunigan, Martin Dickman
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Selected antiapoptotic genes were expressed in baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to evaluate cytoprotective effects during oxidative stress. When exposed to treatments resulting in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including H2O2, menadione, or heat shock, wild-type yeast died and exhibited apoptotic-like characteristics, consistent with previous studies. Yeast strains were generated expressing nematode ced-9, human bcl-2, or chicken bcl-xl genes. These transformants tolerated a range of oxidative stresses, did not display features associated with apoptosis, and remained viable under conditions that were lethal to wildtype yeast. Yeast strains expressing a mutant antiapoptotic gene (bcl-2 …

Evaluation In-Service Program For Professional Development, Aida Colon
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if an in-service would help the staff gain knowledge and experience in dealing and interacting with different languages and cultures that are represented in the school.
The staff was given an in-service, part of which placed them in different situations and required them to think and react to how they felt in that situation. There was a group of twenty students from different languages and cultures. The students spoke on how they felt being in a country where they did not understand the new culture and language. There was also a question …
Using Background Music To Reduce Off-Task Behaviors Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Lesa Deshield Givens
Using Background Music To Reduce Off-Task Behaviors Of Students With Learning Disabilities, Lesa Deshield Givens
Theses and Dissertations
Many children with learning disabilities (LD) frequently exhibit attention and motivational problems as well as impulsive and physically aggressive behaviors (Hoy & Gregg, 1994). Thus, learning, for these students, is a great challenge and for teachers, providing effective instruction is a great challenge too. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of background music on the classroom behavior of students with learning disabilities. A sample of 7 students with learning disabilities from grades 4 and 5 participated in this study. They received instruction in the language arts and math in two (2) special education resource classrooms. A …

A Vegetation And Fire History Of Lake Titicaca Since The Last Glacial Maximum, Gina M. Paduano, Mark B. Bush, Paul A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Geoffrey O. Seltzer
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Fine-resolution fossil pollen and charcoal analyses reconstruct a vegetation and fire history in the area surrounding Lake Titicaca (3810 m, Peru/Bolivia) since ca. 27,500 cal yr BP (hereafter BP). Time control was based on 26 accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) radiocarbon dates. Seventeen AMS dates and 155 pollen and charcoal samples between ca. 17,500 BP and ca. 3,100 BP allow a centennial-scale reconstruction of deglacial and early- to mid-Holocene events. Local and regional fire signals were based on the separation of two charcoal size fractions, ≥180 μm and 179–65 μm. Charcoal abundance correlated closely with the proportion of woody taxa present …

Development Of Dose Coefficients For Radionuclides Produced In Spallation Neutron Sources, Phillip W. Patton
Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)
A research consortium comprised of representatives from several universities and national laboratories has been established as part of this on-going project to generate internal and external dose conversion coefficients for radionuclides produced in spallation neutron sources. Information obtained from this multi-year study will be used to support the siting and licensing of future accelerator-driven nuclear initiatives within the U.S. Department of Energy complex, including the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) Projects. Determination of these coefficients will also fill data gaps for several hundred radionuclides that exist in Federal Guide Report No. 11 and in …
Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg
Immobilization Of Fission Iodine By Reaction With A Fullerene Containing Carbon Compound And Insoluble Natural Organic Matrix, Spencer M. Steinberg
Separations Campaign (TRP)
The recovery of iodine released during the processing of used nuclear fuel poses a significant challenge to the transmutation of radioactive iodine. This proposal will develop and examine the use of Fullerene Containing Carbon (FCC) compounds as potential sorbents for iodine release from the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. This work will also include the development of bench-scale testing capabilities at UNLV to allow the testing of the FCC material in a simulated process off-gas environment. This experimental capability will also be used to test other potential sorbtion materials and processes, such as natural organic matter (NOM) and other promising alternatives. …

Production Of Methyl Bromide In A Temperate Forest Soil, Ruth K. Varner, Marguerite L. White, Cindy H. Mosedale, Patrick M. Crill
Faculty Publications
Field enclosure measurements of a temperate forest soil show net uptake of ambient methyl bromide (CH3Br), an important trace gas in both tropospheric and stratospheric ozone cycling. The net flux for 1999 was estimated to be −168 ± 72 μg CH3Br m−2 (negative indicates loss from the atmosphere). Individual enclosure flux measurements ranged from −4.0 to +3.3 μg CH3Br m−2 d−1. Soil consumption of CH3Br was estimated from laboratory soil incubations. Production of CH3Br was calculated as the difference between net flux and predicted consumption. Fungi could be responsible for the production of CH3Br in this temperate forest soil.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) has been implicated in the development and pathogenicity of infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders, such as septic shock and arthritis. The zinc-finger protein tristetraprolin (TTP) has been identified as a major regulator of TNF biosynthesis. To define its intracellular location and examine its regulation of TNF, a quantitive intracellular staining assay specific for TTP was developed. We establish for the first time that in peripheral blood leukocytes, express

Rhythmic Binding Of A White Collar-Containing Complex To The Frequency Promoter Is Inhibited By Frequency, Allan C. Froehlich, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap
Dartmouth Scholarship
The biological clock of Neurospora crassa includes interconnected transcriptional and translational feedback loops that cause both the transcript and protein encoded by the frequency gene (frq) to undergo the robust daily oscillations in abundance, which are essential for clock function. To understand better the mechanism generating rhythmic frq transcript, reporter constructs were used to show that the oscillation in frq message is transcriptionally regulated, and a single cis-acting element in the frq promoter, the Clock Box (C box), is both necessary and sufficient for this rhythmic transcription. Nuclear protein extracts used in binding assays revealed that a White Collar (WC)-1- …
