Effects Of Lining Cooling Tower Interior Walls On Controlling The Growth Of Legionella Pneumophila, Kamal Rafiq Saeed Jaroor
Effects Of Lining Cooling Tower Interior Walls On Controlling The Growth Of Legionella Pneumophila, Kamal Rafiq Saeed Jaroor
Theses
The presence of Legionella pneumophila in cooling tower waters is a serious health hazard. If the contaminated mist from the cooling tower is inhaled, Legionnaires' disease could be contracted. Of the 2.4 million cases of pneumonia that occur each year in the United States, an estimated 8,000 to 18,000 are actually cases of Legionnaires' disease. Several factors have been suggested in the literature that enhance the high bacterial count in cooling towers including: temperature, pH, water stagnation, and presence of algae and protozoa.
On few occasions, water samples from the cooling tower at Dubai Hospital tested positive for Legionella pneumophila …

Assessment Of The Performance Of Shape Memory Alloys As Implant Devices, Noura Ali Al-Khalifi
Assessment Of The Performance Of Shape Memory Alloys As Implant Devices, Noura Ali Al-Khalifi
Theses
Shape memory alloys are one class of the family of smart materials. They are considered as biomaterials, since they are well accepted by the human body. One special feature of shape memory alloys (SMA) is their ability to revert to their previous shape. This material is deformed at low temperature and when it is heated, it returns (remember) to its original form. Although, the implant binary NiTi SMA is particularly successful as a biomaterial, our NiTi SMA consist of more that 50% (55.7%) of nickel. The main purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the biological response of the shape …

Are Antinuclear Antibodies And Rheumatiod Factor Positivity More Prevalent In Apparently Healthy Smokers Compared To Ex-Smokers And Never Smokers?, Susan Nyanzi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Context: There is now consistent evidence from population and epidemiological studies that cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor for Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), via Rheumatoid Factor (RF) production (Deighton, 1997; Saag, 1997; Silman, 1996; Uhlig, 1999; Wolfe, 2000). Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA) are another collection of autoantibodies that are being associated with smoking and RA initiation. To our knowledge, no studies have examined the effects of smoking on both ANA and RF simultaneously in healthy subjects.
Objectives: To determine whether cigarette smoking has an effect on ANA and RF positivity in healthy blood donors.
Design, Setting, Participants: This was a cross-sectional, …

Parallel Simulation Of Microflows By Dsmc And Burnett Equations, Yichuan Fang
Parallel Simulation Of Microflows By Dsmc And Burnett Equations, Yichuan Fang
Dissertations
The primary objective of this dissertation is to numerically simulate and study the heat transfer and flow characteristics in fluidic microelectromechanical system (MEMS). In typical microfluidic MEMS applications, the ratio of the gas mean-free-path to the characteristic length scale, or the Knudsen number, can be large. The traditional mathematical models of continuum fluid based on the Navier-Stokes equations may become invalid because of their constitutive relations of viscous stress and heat flux.
In this study, the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method and the conventional Burnett equations are applied to model the microflows in microchannels from molecular and continuum point …

Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Novel Nanostructured Ion Implanted Laser Ablated Silicon Using Femtosecond Pulse Excitation, Elaine Nicole Lalanne
Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Novel Nanostructured Ion Implanted Laser Ablated Silicon Using Femtosecond Pulse Excitation, Elaine Nicole Lalanne
Dissertations
The study of the nonlinear optical properties of novel nanostructured ion implanted and laser ablation of Silicon is motivated by the need for materials that exhibit large values of the real part of the third order nonlinear susceptibility (χ(3)Re). This property is essential for light controlled phase or refractive index modulation at low power, where the optical properties are used for optical switching devices. Previous nanosecond (ns) measurements indicated values of-2.8 x 10 -5; esu ( γ = 532 nm) for χ(3)Re.
The characterization of nonlinear optical properties of the samples was studied …
Effects Of Implementation Of Decaborane Ions In Silicon, Cheng Li
Effects Of Implementation Of Decaborane Ions In Silicon, Cheng Li
Dissertations
The next generations of Si microelectronic devices will require ultra shallow p-type junctions formed by implantation of B ions with energies below 1 keV, at which available beam currents are severely limited by space charge effects. To solve this problem, decaborane (B10H14) cluster ion implantation has been suggested as an attractive alternative to conventional B implants, because one decaborane ion implants ten B atoms simultaneously and each of the B atoms only carries approximately 1/11 of the total ion energy. Thus the same implantation depth and dose as with monomer B ions can be obtained using …
Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of The Field-Induced Phenomena In Flowing Suspensions, Nikolai Markarian
Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of The Field-Induced Phenomena In Flowing Suspensions, Nikolai Markarian
Dissertations
The present work describes results of experimental and theoretical studies of the behavior of dilute suspensions subject to high gradient AC electric fields. When a spatially non-uniform electric field is applied to a suspension, in which the particles and the suspending fluid have different dielectric permittivities andlor conductivities, the particles migrate towards the regions of high or low electric field strengths depending on the sign of their polarization. This phenomenon, referred to as dielectrophoresis, has found numerous applications for the control and manipulation of the particle motions.
Presented in Chapter 3 are the results of studying the field -induced motion …

Time-Frequency Investigation Of Heart Rate Variability And Cardiovascular System Modeling Of Normal And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Copd) Subjects, Douglas Alan Newandee
Dissertations
A study has been designed to add insight to some questions that have not been fully investigated in the heart rate variability field and the cardiovascular regulation system in normal and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) subjects. It explores the correlations between heart rate variability and cardiovascular regulation, which interact through complex multiple feedback and control loops. This work examines the coupling between heart rate (HR), respiration (RESP), and blood pressure (BP) via closed-loop system identification techniques in order to noninvasively assess the underlying physiology.
In the first part of the study, the applications of five different bilinear time-frequency representations …

Other Nanotechnology Publications
High sensitivity chemical and biological detection techniques and the development of future electronic systems can greatly benefit from self-assembly processes and techniques. We have approached this challenge using biologically inspired events such as the hybridization of single (ss)- to double-stranded (ds) DNA and the strong affinity between the protein avidin and its associated Vitamin, biotin. Using these molecules, micro-scale polystyrene beads and nano-scale gold particles were assembled with high efficiency on gold patterns and the procedures used for these processes were optimized. The DNA and avidin-biotin complex was also used to demonstrate the attachment of micro-scale silicon islands to each …

Theses
The synthesis of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by the catalyticdisproportionation of carbon monoxide (CO) (i.e., Boudouard reaction) at I atm pressureand 700-800 C, has been systematically investigated in order to determine whether theprocess can be used for the large scale production. SWNT diameter distribution andmorphology were studied by Raman scattering, and scanning and transmission electronmicroscopy, respectively. X-ray diffraction was used to determine levels of the remnantcatalyst and support. Synthesis experiments were conducted using a three-stage processwith hydrogen to reduce the catalyst-precursor and argon to cool the system. Two typesof catalyst/support synthesis were studied: (1) Combustion synthesis to form catalyst …
Chat And Instant Messaging : The Risks Of Secondary Orality, Gregory P. Kohn
Chat And Instant Messaging : The Risks Of Secondary Orality, Gregory P. Kohn
Theses
The synchronous nature of chat and instant messaging (IM) make them unique among computer-enabled communications technologies in that their real-time exchange of data allows for rich media experiences, even though users can only use text symbols to trade messages. Chat and IM are also important in that they enable secondary orality, or the merger of the most beneficial aspects of orally-based cultures with the well-documented benefits of print and text. Where print in the modem day has fostered contemplative behavior and inward thought among human beings, chat and IM breathe vitality into print and, in a sense, allow print to …
Detecting Malfunction In Wireless Sensor Networks, Pablito C. Lake
Detecting Malfunction In Wireless Sensor Networks, Pablito C. Lake
Theses
The objective of this thesis is to detect malfunctioning sensors in wireless sensor networks. The ability to detect abnormality is critical to the security of any sensor network. However, the ability to detect a faulty wireless sensor is not trivial. Controlled repeatable experiments are difficult in wireless channels. A Redhat Linux. 7.0 Wireless Emulation Dynamic Switch software was used to solve this problem.
Six nodes were configured with a node acting as a base station. The nodes were all part of a cell. This means that every node could communicate with all other nodes. A client-server program simulated the background …
Addition Of A Chain-Cell Search Method And A Van Der Waals Force Model To A Particle Dynamics Code, Michael J. Sweetman
Addition Of A Chain-Cell Search Method And A Van Der Waals Force Model To A Particle Dynamics Code, Michael J. Sweetman
Theses
This project studies the implementation of a computational time saving technique and adds an additional force model into a discrete element method simulation code. Both aspects of the project are focused on increasing the versatility of an existing particle dynamics code by increasing the execution speed and available force models for simulation.
The first portion of the project consisted of adding a function to the collision detection mechanism to hash the particles into a spatial grid. This hashing function allows a search for near neighbor particles to be restricted to the space immediately adjacent to the particle of interest, thereby …

The Illusion Of Science : Images Of Science On Stage, Preethi Ganapathy
The Illusion Of Science : Images Of Science On Stage, Preethi Ganapathy
Theses
Science has long been regarded as a process of thinking, of pursuing the truth. This quest traditionally has been reserved for an elite group of thinkers, since at least the time of Aristotle, who was considered as the undisputed authority on philosophical truth, including that which we call science. The Scientific Revolution challenged Aristotle's authority and paved the way for the new method of evaluating scientific truths developed by Bacon, Descartes, and Galileo. Science became, over time, a process of inquiry open to all social and economic classes and accessible to all. In the twentieth century, the role of science …
