Science, Sexuality, And The Novels Of Huxley And Houellebecq, Angela C. Holzer Jun 2003

Science, Sexuality, And The Novels Of Huxley And Houellebecq, Angela C. Holzer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Science, Sexuality, and the Novels of Huxley and Houellebecq," Angela C. Holzer begins with an introduction to recent discourse about contemporary culture by Francis Fukuyama, notably in his book Our Posthuman Future (2001). Next, Holzer introduces twentieth-century literary representations of genetic engineering. Focusing on Huxley's Brave New World (1932) and on Houellebecq's Les Particules élémentaires (1998), Holzer discusses differences in "utopian" literature when linked to metaphysical aspects of reproduction and that are owing to changes in the life sciences and medicine. Further, Holzer explores the implications for poetics resulting from scientific developments and relates Houellebecq's perspectives to …

Resistance Status Of House Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) From Southeastern Nebraska Beef Cattle Feedlots To Selected Insecticides, Paula C.R.G. Marcon, Gustave D. Thomas, Blair D. Siegfried, John B. Campbell, Steven R. Skoda Jun 2003

Resistance Status Of House Flies (Diptera: Muscidae) From Southeastern Nebraska Beef Cattle Feedlots To Selected Insecticides, Paula C.R.G. Marcon, Gustave D. Thomas, Blair D. Siegfried, John B. Campbell, Steven R. Skoda

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The status of resistance to three insecticides (permethrin, stirofos, and methoxychlor), relative to a laboratory-susceptible colony, was evaluated in Þeld populations of house flies, Musca domestica L., collected from two beef cattle feedlots in southeastern Nebraska. Topical application and residual exposure to treated glass surfaces were suitable methods for determining the resistance status of house flies to permethrin, stirofos, or methoxychlor. However, in most cases, residual exposure was more sensitive in resistance detection (i.e., higher resistance ratios). The field populations tested were moderately resistant to permethrin (RR = 4.9-fold and RR = 7.3-fold, for topical application and residual exposure, respectively) …

American Avocet Nesting On Constructed Islands In North Dakota, Ann L. Dahl, Douglas H. Johnson, Lawrence D. Igl, Kathy L. Baer, Terry L. Shaffer, Michael A. Johnson, Ronald E. Reynolds

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We related American avocet (Recurvirostra americana) nesting on 30 earthen constructed islands in wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota to characteristics of the islands and the surrounding landscape. We found 174 American avocet nests on 10 of the 30 islands; eight islands had four or more nests each. Most (85.9%) clutches contained four eggs. The majority of nests were found in upland graminoids (57.9%) or on unvegetated ground (31.6%). We found little evidence of nest predation or abandonment and concluded that most (84.5%) clutches hatched. Islands with beaches had a higher nest density (mean number …

Review Of Molecular Infection Biology: Interactions Between Mircoorganisms And Cells By Jörg Hacker And Jürgen Heesemann, Jeffrey D. Cirillo

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Pathogenesis is one potential outcome of the constant struggle between host defenses and the desire of microorganisms to acquire a privileged niche. This mutually competitive evolutionary process has resulted in interactions among complex and often elegant systems throughout the course of infections. The complexity of these interactions and the large number of infectious agents that exist makes the introduction of students to infectious diseases, as well as a comprehensive review of the field, an extremely daunting task. This book provides just such a comprehensive and timely description of the field in a manner that is easily understandable and enjoyable to …

Endangered Democratic Institutions And Instrumental Inquiry: Remarks Upon Receiving The Veblen-Commons Award, F. Gregory Hayden Jun 2003

Endangered Democratic Institutions And Instrumental Inquiry: Remarks Upon Receiving The Veblen-Commons Award, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

In the 1890s, British cattle companies drove large herds into the sparsely settled grasslands of Nebraska like an invading army. Immediately, the drovers started killing homesteaders, who were always shot on the homesteader’s land at the plow or mower to clarify that it was the homesteading that was the capital offense. The cattle companies fenced public lands and paid others to file claims on their behalf, all in clear violation of the law but protected because they controlled the courts, bought political influence, and continued to intimidate. Many homesteaders refused to be intimidated. They contested the phony homesteads and testified …

Racb Regulates Cytoskeletal Function In Dictyostelium Spp., Eunkyung Lee, David J. Seastone, Ed Harris, James A. Cardelli, David A. Knecht

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Thus far, 14 homologues of mammalian Rac proteins have been identified in Dictyostelium. It is unclear whether each of these genes has a unique function or to what extent they play redundant roles in actin cytoskeletal organization. To investigate the specific function of RacB, we have conditionally expressed wild-type (WT-RacB), dominant negative (N17-RacB), and constitutively activated (V12-RacB) versions of the protein. On induction, cells expressing V12-RacB stopped growing, detached from the surface, and formed numerous spherical surface protrusions while cells overexpressing WT-RacB became flattened on the surface. In contrast, cells overexpressing N17-RacB did not show any significant morphological abnormalities. …

The State Of Domestic Violence Protective Orders In Hidalgo County, Texas, Cindy Noel Berner

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Domestic violence has long been an issue for the criminal justice system and society. Despite decades of research, activism, and intervention programs, much remains to be accomplished. There are many facets to studying domestic violence. However, there are few studies that specifically deal with protective orders and what, if any, effect they have on the occurrence of domestic violence. The goal of this researcher was to discover whether there were any relationships between variables such as age, gender, and employment status and the decision to not issue a protective order. The data used in this study were obtained from the …

Predators And Life Histories Shape Lestes Damselfly Assemblages Along A Freshwater Habitat Gradient, Robby Stoks, Mark A. Mcpeek Jun 2003

Predators And Life Histories Shape Lestes Damselfly Assemblages Along A Freshwater Habitat Gradient, Robby Stoks, Mark A. Mcpeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

Survey data from New England showed that assemblages of Lestes damselflies are organized along the entire gradient of pond permanence and predator presence. One assemblage occupies vernal ponds lacking large dragonfly predators and fish; four are largely confined to temporary ponds that typically contain dragonfly predators; one dominates fishless permanent ponds and lakes where dragonflies are the top predators; and one dominates permanent ponds and lakes where fish are the top predators. We determined the role of life history and predation in maintaining this striking pattern by conducting a series of transplant experiments in the field and a laboratory experiment …

The Role Of The Dielectric Barrier In Narrow Biological Channels: A Novel Composite Approach To Modeling Single-Channel Currents, Artem B. Mamonov, Rob D. Coalson, Abraham Nitzan, Maria G. Kurnikova Jun 2003

The Role Of The Dielectric Barrier In Narrow Biological Channels: A Novel Composite Approach To Modeling Single-Channel Currents, Artem B. Mamonov, Rob D. Coalson, Abraham Nitzan, Maria G. Kurnikova

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A composite continuum theory for calculating ion current through a protein channel of known structure is proposed, which incorporates information about the channel dynamics. The approach is utilized to predict current through the Gramicidin A ion channel, a narrow pore in which the applicability of conventional continuum theories is questionable. The proposed approach utilizes a modified version of Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) theory, termed Potential-of-Mean-Force-Poisson-Nernst-Planck theory (PMFPNP), to compute ion currents. As in standard PNP, ion permeation is modeled as a continuum drift-diffusion process in a self-consistent electrostatic potential. In PMFPNP, however, information about the dynamic relaxation of the protein and the …

Microspectrophotometry Of Respiratory Pigments, Karen Yvonne Kavanagh

Doctoral

This research thesis describes the design, construction and optical testing of three fibre-optic microspectrophotometer systems to monitor the reduction of mitochondrial respiratory pigments. The optical and biochemical characteristics of mitochondrial respiration are discussed and the current optical techniques employed in the biochemical analysis of respiratory enzymes are presented. The primary focus of this study is the system parameters surrounding the spectrophotometric determination of mitochondrial respiratory activity. Three separate fibre-optic set-ups are described, which use visible spectrophotometry to measure the reduction of mitochondrial electron carriers from a range of biological sources. Each system is based around the Ocean Optics S1000/S2000 series …

Qualitative Research - Airy Fairy Or Fundamental?, Adri Labuschagne Jun 2003

Qualitative Research - Airy Fairy Or Fundamental?, Adri Labuschagne

The Qualitative Report

For many scientists used to doing quantitative studies the whole concept of qualitative research is unclear, almost foreign, or 'airy fairy' - not ' real' research. Clinical scientists sometimes find it difficult to accept this research method where the generation of hypotheses often replaces the testing thereof, explanation replaces measurement, and understanding replaces generalisability. Since qualitative research is becoming a prominent tool in medical research, it will be worthwhile to have a closer look at what it is and how it works.

Innovative Motivational Profiling: Comparing Marketing Projective Techniques Versus Linguistic Forensic Techniques, Joseph Yeager Jun 2003

Innovative Motivational Profiling: Comparing Marketing Projective Techniques Versus Linguistic Forensic Techniques, Joseph Yeager

The Qualitative Report

Motivational profiling is commonly done in both marketing and forensic contexts. In an unabashed quest for creativity, many marketer s use projective psychological techniques to search for inspiration that leads to ad concepts that will, ultimately, sell more products. Forensic professionals also seek predictive information about motivation in search of facts that will effectively lead to the capture and handling of criminals by using the recent advances found in linguistic technology. Projective profiling techniques produce very soft, opinionated data that are open to interpretation and which has only random relevance to predicting customer behavior. In contrast, linguistic profiling techniques produce …

Are Asian Thinking Styles Different? Acculturation And Thinking Styles In A Chinese-Canadian Population, Jenny M. Tang Jun 2003

Are Asian Thinking Styles Different? Acculturation And Thinking Styles In A Chinese-Canadian Population, Jenny M. Tang

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This research examined the theory of mental self-government and its various thinking styles. The theory of mental self-government (Sternberg, 1988a) has established its utility in verbal contexts including education, occupation, partner choices, and cross-culturally. The Associated Thinking Style Inventory (TSI; Sternberg & Wagner, 1991; 1992) has also demonstrated its reliability and validity in a Hong Kong population (Zhang, 1999; Zhang & Lcks, 1997; Zhang & Sternberg, 1998), but it has not been used with Chinese-Canadians. It was hypothesized that as Chinese individuals become more acculturated to the North American cultural system, their thinking styles approach European-American norms. This study found …

Treatment Of Industrial Wastewater From Food Processing Plant Under Climate Conditions, Saeed Mohamed Wali Abdulla Karmustaji Jun 2003

Treatment Of Industrial Wastewater From Food Processing Plant Under Climate Conditions, Saeed Mohamed Wali Abdulla Karmustaji

Theses

This research thesis will study the performance of wastewater treatment plant using a two-phase continuous flow anaerobic/aerobic treatment plant for the treatment of industrial wastewater from a confectionary factory in Dubai. The treatment design is based on anaerobic process under mesophilic conditions (31 +/- 2 °C) range where only the heat of the inlet and the natural climatic temperature are utilized to maintain the reactor operational. An aerobic activated sludge process to achieve the required legal standards follows the anaerobic treatment.

During the anaerobic process, biogas is generated and stored in a collection chamber and linked to an automated flared …
