Environmental controls of fish growth in the Bering Sea were investigated by examining growth increments and length-at-age. A sea ice-initiated conceptual model of growth that differentiates between food and water temperature controls was proposed. The timing of ice retreat in the region was hypothesized to control food availability by influencing the fate of primary production and inversely affecting prey availability in pelagic and benthic environments. The extent and persistence of ice coverage was hypothesized to influence shelf water temperatures through' cold pool' development. Temperature And Food Effects On Larval Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasi) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Sarah Jane Thornton

The effects of food availability and water temperature on larval Pacific herring growth rates and survival were studied using a coupled biophysical model for 1993 through 1997. The herring growth model included feeding gains, metabolic costs, mortality losses and vertical migration of the herring larvae. In years when springtime oceanographic processes resulted in a high concentration of zooplankton, food availability did not limit larval herring growth rates; water temperature determined survival. However, in other years, food availability did limit survival, either due to insufficient food concentrations or to inaccessibility of the food. Since the inception of Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) as a viable contaminated soil restoration strategy, operators of these systems have struggled with determining the best date to terminate operation of their systems. Using principles of soil-gas flow and mass transport through unsaturated soils, stochastic hydrogeology, uncertainty analysis, and a cost/risk decision model, a procedure that can determine the appropriate time to discontinue operation of SVE systems was developed. Modeling of physical characteristics and determination of mass removal of a SVE system was accomplished using statistical realizations of permeability (uncertainty model) and a 2D advective-dispersive finite element vapor transport program (VapourT). …

Reproductive Decisions By Black Brant: Mechanisms To Synchronize Hatch And Spatial Variation In Growth Rates Of Goslings, Christopher Andrew Nicolai

I investigated two aspects of reproductive decisions in Black Brant: synchronous hatch within clutches and areas in which to rear their broods. It has been hypothesized that Anatidae facilitate a synchronous hatch through vocalizations among embryos within the same clutch. I performed manipulative experiments in which variation was controlled for both genetic and incubation pattern sources in incubation period length. Our results suggest that vocalizations are not responsible for a synchronous hatch, and I suggest that inherent properties of the eggs themselves are responsible for a synchronous hatch. A temperature controlled flow tube system equipped with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) detection of particle phase and relative humidity was used to measure the deliquescence and efflorescence of ammonium sulfate, maleic acid, and internally mixed maleic acid/ammonium sulfate particles. Our results indicate that maleic acid aerosols begin to take up water starting at a low relative humidity, ∼20%, and continue the constant uptake of water until the final deliquescence relative humidity (DRH), 89%, is reached. Internally mixed particles containing maleic acid and ammonium sulfate were found to deliquesce at a lower relative humidity (RH) than either of the pure species. …

Advances In Satellite Radiometry For The Surveillance Of Surface Temperatures, Ocean Eddies And Upwelling Processes In The Gulf Of Mexico Using Goes-8 Measurements During Summer, Nan Walker, Soe Myint, Adele Babin, Alaric Haag

GOES-8 satellite infrared (IR) measurements have been under-utilized in oceanographic research, although they provide several advantages over measurements from other sensors such as the NOAA AVHRR. Frequent coverage (48 times/day) over large regions, low noise in the mid- IR channel, and sole use of nighttime data have enabled the development of improved techniques for producing "de-clouded" images and calculating accurate SSTs (with RMS errors < 0.5°C), over cloudy and humid regions such as the Gulf of Mexico. Animations of SST composite images reveal movements of the Loop Current, its frontal eddies and coastal upwelling even during summer months. GOES-12 and future GOES imagers for the next decade are missing the 12 μm channel; however, this study demonstrates that the mid-IR channel is even more useful than previously thought.

This special issue on the development and evolution of the amniote integument begins with a discussion of the adaptations to terrestrial conditions, the acquisition of water-impermeability by the reptilian integument, and the initial formation of filamentous integumentary appendages that pave the way towards avian flight. Recent feather fossils are reviewed and a definition of feathers is developed. Hierarchical models are proposed for the formation of complex structures, such as feathers. Molecular signals that alter the phenotype of integumentary appendages at different levels of the hierarchy are presented. Three identical deoxyoligonucleotide third strands with a 3'-terminal psoralen moiety attached by linkers that differ in length (N=16, 6 and 4 atoms) and structure were examined for their ability to form triplex-directed psoralen photoproducts with both the mutant T residue of the Sickle Cell beta-globin gene and the comparable wild-type sequence in linear duplex targets. Specificity and yield of UVA (365 nm) and visible (419 nm) light-induced photoadducts were studied. The total photoproduct yield varies with the linker and includes both monoadducts and crosslinks at various available pyrimidine sites. We developed a protocol for determining the maximum rate of oxygen consumption of shorebird chicks (Scolopacidae and Charadriidae) in response to cold challenge. We first subjected the chicks to gradually decreasing temperatures until their metabolism peaked and began to decrease. We ended the cooling phase of a trial when a chick’s body temperature Tb had declined typically to 32–34°C. After this point, we gradually increased the temperature in the metabolism chamber until normal Tb values and thermoneutral resting metabolism were restored. We refer to this cycle as the down–up (DU) protocol. We estimated instantaneous oxygen consumption (V . O∑) using …

The seedling-infecting pathogen Ustilago bullata Berk. is a naturally occurring biological control agent for cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.). The effects of temperature and nutrients on pathogen teliospore germination behavior and the effects of temperature on host seed germination were examined. The effects of temperature on sporidial proliferation, host infection in a temperature-controlled environment and in a field setting for eight populations were investigated. The infection success of Ustilago bullata on Bromus tectorum in cultivated fields as a function of seeding date, inoculation method, inoculum density, supplemental watering, and litter was also investigated. Scientific studies and resident testimony suggest that urban residents in low-income and minority communities have been subject to an unequal burden of environmental pollution and inequitable environmental enforcement practices. A key component of the equitable development and implementation of environmental policies is the participation of citizens and community-based organizations in the policy process. Such participation rests upon equitable access to agency-generated environmental information and effective use of that information by citizens. This Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) acknowledges each signatory agency’s respective missions. Through this MOA, the agencies establish procedures necessary to coordinate their missions to more effectively address existing and future environmental conditions contributing to aircraft-wildlife strikes throughout the United States. These efforts are intended to minimize wildlife risks to aviation and human safety, while protecting the Nation’s valuable environmental resources.

Odors are a major result of inadequately sized and mismanaged anaerobic lagoons. However, purple or pink colored lagoons, indicating the presence of phototrophic purple bacteria, are less likely to be an odor nuisance than are non–purple lagoons. Eight swine lagoons were studied to quantify critical parameters thought to allow purple lagoons to be a more reliable odor control alternative. Bacteriochlorophyll a (Bchl a), which indirectly measures the abundance of phototrophic bacteria, was greater in purple lagoons than in non–purple lagoons (P = 0.01). Oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) was less negative for purple lagoons than for non–purple lagoons in both spring …

This paper addresses the key requirements for a commercial small satellite platform, and the specific problems encountered in effectively adapting it to a range of mission types. A modular concept is proposed, which may be reconfigured to more closely match the requirements of each specific mission, whilst minimising the required redesign time and associated cost. This concept enables a programmatic approach where the level of a priori design, manufacture, and test of the platform is maximised. Members of the family Canidae are distinguished from other carnivore families by pair bonding and male care of the young. Because of the importance of food provisioning and territorial defence by males, social structure among canids is shared or even dominated by males. However, small, insectivorous species of canids show little male parental care, although whether social structure differs from other canids is unknown. We combined data from three independent research projects on a small canid, the swift fox, to help elucidate the social organization of this species.
