Royal terns (Sterna maxima) in Florida are listed as a “species of special concern” by the Florida Committee on Rare and Endangered Plants and Animals (Egensteiner et al., 1996). These birds live along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida throughout the year (Egensteiner et al., 1996); their winter range along the Atlantic Coast of the United States is from North Carolina south through Florida (Clapp et al., 1983), with the Florida population augmented by terns migrating from breeding colonies farther north. This study examined emotional empathy and reasons for living in substance using college students. Participants included 49 males and 120 females, ages 18 to 54 years (M = 21.95) from undergraduate psychology classes. A packet containing a substance abuse scale, a short demographic, Balanced Emotional Empathy Scale (BEES), and Reasons for Living Inventory (RFL) was administered. The independent variables were gender and levels of substance use. The dependent variables were reasons for living scores and emotional empathy scores.

This paper describes theoretical and experimental results for the auto-calibration of sensor platform consisting of a camera and a laser range finder. Real-world use of autonomous sensor platforms often requires the recalibration of sensors without an explicit calibration object. The constraints are based upon data captured simultaneously from the camera and the laser range finder while the sensor plat-form undergoes an arbitrary motion. The rigid motions of both sensors are related, so these data constrain the relative position and orientation of the camera and laser range finder. Previous researchers have reported women doing better than men in object recall. The current study tested for gender differences in object recall over three memorization trials using gender neutral stimuli. Fifty men and 53 women viewed pictures of 60 objects (15 in each of four quadrants) for one minute, and then had three minutes to recall as many objects and locations as they could. This procedure was followed over three trials. Women performed better than men, and the difference increased across trials. Training was successful as participants recalled significantly more objects and locations on trial 3 than on trial 1. …

Previous studies involving copper (II) complexed with a dissymmetric Schiff base and imidazole derivatives had identified catalase activity of these complexes towards H₂O₂. Reactions such as this are of great interest due to the important role of copper-based complexes in biological systems. Our research has been conducted to add to the base of knowledge regarding the efforts of other researchers to investigate copper complexes that exhibit similar reactivity as copper-based proteins towards dioxygen. We present a multiline, high spatial and velocity resolution CO, H I, and IRAS 100 μm study of the high-latitude, low-mass, non-star-forming, translucent molecular cloud MBM 40. The cloud mass is distributed into two ridges, or filaments, that form a hairpin structure. Velocity channel maps indicate a highly ordered flow in the molecular gas, with the northeastern part of the filament moving away from and the southwestern filament moving toward the observer relative to the mean cloud radial velocity. Significant changes in emissivity occur over 0.03 pc, indicating large transverse density gradients along the ridges. However, the velocity field appears …

Through NMR experiments of the reaction of barbituric acid with carbodiimide, a general synthetic procedure for the preparation of 5-diaminomethylenebarbiturates (DABA) was developed. This procedure is very simple and applicable to the preparation of large quantities of DABA derivatives. Through the X-ray structural study of one of the DABA derivatives it was established that these compounds have a ylide-type structure with strong charge separation inside the molecule. 5-Ylide-pyridinium-methyl barbituric acid derivatives were investigated with the isolation of 4-dimethylamino-1-(2,4,6-trioxohexahydro- pyrimidin-5-ylide-methyl)-pyridinium as well as its corresponding 1,3- dimethylbarbituric acid derivative with quantitative yields. Images are forming an increasingly large part of modern communications, bringing the need for efficient and effective compression. Many techniques developed for this purpose include transform coding, vector quantization and neural networks. In this thesis, a new neural network method is used to achieve image compression. This work extends the use of 2-layer neural networks to a combination of cascaded networks with one node in the hidden layer. A redistribution of the gray levels in the training phase is implemented in a random fashion to make the minimization of the mean square error applicable to a broad range of images. …

There is evidence to suggest that an impaired ability to process distressing and threatening emotional stimuli may result in a callous-unemotional (CU) and thrill-andadventure- seeking (TAS) personality. In this study we examined emotional processing in fifty community children, each with one parent, using the emotional pictures dot-probe task, which is a computerized task measuring attention to emotional pictures in the form of a facilitation score. The relationship between emotional processing, CU traits, and TAS were examined to determine whether individuals high on CU traits would also be more TAS, and show a lack of facilitation to emotional pictures. The fate of nutrients and their relationships in the London Avenue Canal is very complex. This study was undertaken to assess the water quality of the canal in wet and dry weather conditions, and to develop a 2 "“ layer model to predict the response of the canal to storm water discharges. A relatively new concept of Municipal Solid Waste treatment is known as bioreactor landfill technology. Bioreactor landfills are sanitary landfills that use microbiological processes purposefully to transform and stabilize the biodegradable organic waste constituents in a shorter period of time. One of the most popular types of bioreactor landfills is the landfill with leachate recirculation. However, it is observed that ammonia rapidly accumulates in landfills that recirculate leachate and may be the component that limits the potential to discharge excess leachate to the environment. In an effort to search for a more selective, less toxic neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor analgesic agent in comparison to epibatidine, a series of analogs with hybrid structures of epibatidine and ABT-594 were designed and synthesized. The 1-(pyridyloxymethyl)-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane ring systems were furnished via an intramolecular cyclization from a trans 1, 4 disubstitituted amino-cyclohexane derivative. The functionalized cyclohexane ring was formed via a [4+2] Diels-Alder cyclization reaction between the acetamidoacrylate and Danishefsky's diene. Lattice effects in ecological time-series are patterns that arise because of the inherent discreteness of animal numbers. In this paper, we suggest a systematic approach for predicting lattice effects. We also show that an explanation of all the patterns in a population time-series may require more than one deterministic model, especially when the dynamics are complex.

The article analyzes the structure and evolution of the current, traditional model of law enforcement and explains why this model is not an effective means of addressing computer-facilitated criminal activity. It begins by analyzing the operation of rules in collective systems composed of biological or artificial entities; it explains that every such system utilizes basic, constitutive rules to maintain both internal and external order. The article explains that intelligence has a profound effect upon a system’s ability to maintain internal order.
