Latinos In Somerville, Massachusetts, Daniel W. Vasquez
Latinos In Somerville, Massachusetts, Daniel W. Vasquez
Gastón Institute Publications
Census 2000 data include changes in the way people were counted. The most significant change is to allow persons to select more than one race, creating a new multiracial category of “two or more races,” but meaning people may not be included in the race with which they most identify. There was, however, no way to choose more than one ethnicity; one must choose either Latino or not. Throughout this profile, numbers reflect Latinos of all races, or non-Latinos by race, with persons of two or more races counted separately. All categorizations are based solely on self-identification. All of this …
The Culture Of Compliance: The Final Triumph Of Form Over Substance In Sexual Harassment Law, Joanna L. Grossman
The Culture Of Compliance: The Final Triumph Of Form Over Substance In Sexual Harassment Law, Joanna L. Grossman
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This Article is divided into three Parts. Part I briefly describes the continuing problem of sexual harassment and summarizes case law relating to employer liability for sexual harassment. It then describes the incentives the law creates for employers, victims, and harassers, and explains how each group responds to these incentives. Part II explores whether the preventative measures spurred by the legal regime serve Title VII's goal of deterring harassment and preventing harm. It first identifies individual and organizational factors that cause or correlate with the level of harassment in order to develop theoretical connections between employer preventative measures and the …

Identifying The Barriers To Access To Higher Education For African -American Students: Opinions Of Successful African -American Educators, William Lewis Taylor
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine past and present social, educational, and financial barriers to African American access to and success within United States higher educational institutions, and identify and recommend ways of ameliorating those barriers for African American students in the future. Based on a comprehensive literature review and analysis of responses to an author-designed survey questionnaire mailed to a cross-section of current United States African American higher education administrators, the study identified and analyzed past and present impacts, on African Americans, of social, educational, and economic factors possibly impeding their higher education entry and success. These …
Effects Of Classwide Peer Tutoring (Cwpt) On Social Interactions Of Children With And Without English Proficiency, Yaoying Xu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Learning and Education occur in social contexts. The quality of children's peer relationships is an important indication of children's current and later social adjustment. Children with peer problems tend to experience higher levels of loneliness and other undesirable affective consequences, including social dissatisfaction and worrying about peer relations. Because of the limited language proficiency and cultural and ethnic differences among children with LEP, some of their social behaviors are considered inappropriate by their non-LEP teachers and peers. On the other hand, children with LEP may feel that they do not fit in a group or class activity. As a result, …
"The German Arizonians": Ethnic Identity And Society Formation On A Southwestern Frontier, 1853--World War I, Gerhard Grytz
"The German Arizonians": Ethnic Identity And Society Formation On A Southwestern Frontier, 1853--World War I, Gerhard Grytz
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study discusses the experiences and the acculturation process of German immigrants in Arizona from the Gadsden Purchase of 1853 to World War I. German immigrants with distinct regional identities, Bavarians, Badeners, Wuerttembergers, Rhinelanders, and Prussians, made the transition to a regional New World identity and became Arizonans. Even though their history is ultimately the story of acculturation to a dominant society, it is the process that is important. Based on the analysis of census schedules, letters, newspaper reports, interviews, and other archival materials, this study tries to uncover the forces and mechanisms that determined the processes that formed American …
The Effect Of Ambient Scent On Affiliation Behaviors And Social Interactions, Dina Marie Victoria Zemke
The Effect Of Ambient Scent On Affiliation Behaviors And Social Interactions, Dina Marie Victoria Zemke
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The intent of the study was to explore if the focus group and the meetings industries can provide meeting environments that would be more conducive to communication and more productive. The concepts tested in this study are based in environmental psychology, or the study of how the physical environment affects individual and group behavior within the environment. Past studies have examined various ambient conditions and other aspects of the physical environment and their effects on retail environments. However, the characteristics that set services businesses apart from product marketing and retail businesses require new techniques to evaluate the effect of the …

An Examination Of The Effect Of Ethical Climate On Ethical Optimism And Organizational Commitment, Clark S Kincaid
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The issue of unethical behavior in business is a serious concern with practitioners and researchers. The restaurant industry in particular, is vulnerable to unethical actions due to a variety of variables including the availability of large sums of cash, the presence of alcohol, and the late hours of operation. There is a paucity of ethical research in the restaurant industry and this study contributes to that body of knowledge; In this study, the effect of ethical climate in the restaurant industry on ethical optimism and organizational commitment was examined in ten restaurants. The results show that management actions have significant …

Selling The Drama: A Content-Analysis Of Prescribed Storylines In Abc's "Monday Night Football", Frederick William Krauss
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study is a qualitative content-analysis of prescribed storylines used in ABC's Monday Night Football. The sample is of five broadcasts that were recorded during the 2002 National Football League seaSon The analysis of the programs is twofold: (1) to identify the storylines set forth during the pregame show; and (2) to document each time a storyline is referred to during the game, and how it is transmitted to the audience. The storylines were documented through several elements: the time in the game (by quarter) in which an actor was referred to, the actor it was featuring, a descriptive account …
Being Bullied In Adolescence: A Phenomenologic Study, Linda Louise Lesperance
Being Bullied In Adolescence: A Phenomenologic Study, Linda Louise Lesperance
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Bullying is a common phenomenon that involves repeated intentional infliction of harm (physical, verbal, or social) to someone less powerful. Although bullying has been accepted as a normal childhood experience, it can result in a number of negative outcomes, including psychosomatic complaints, depression, suicide, and even homicide. A review of the literature found many research studies related to bullying, but only one phenomenologic study. Understanding what the experience of being bullied is like for those who endure it is an essential element in understanding and addressing the phenomenon of bullying; The purpose of this phenomenological investigation was to understand and …

Names Project Aids Memorial Quilt: A Rhetorical Study Of The Transformation Of An Epidemic Through Social Movement, Daniel C Hinkley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study looks at the Names Project: AIDS Memorial Quilt as a rhetorical artifact and centerpiece of the current AIDS movement. The methodology for this study is an ethnographic and auto-ethnographic design, utilizing interviews with four Quilt volunteers and staffers, including my observations as a person living with AIDS. This study looks at the Quilt using social movement, rhetorical, and dramatist theories to prove that the Quilt is the rhetorical centerpiece of the AIDS Movement. Social movement theories explain how the Quilt mobilized thousands of people to fight AIDS. Rhetorical theories explain how the Quilt transformed the belief that AIDS …
Emerging Identities: New Subjects Within Gay Adoption, Megan O Hartzell
Emerging Identities: New Subjects Within Gay Adoption, Megan O Hartzell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis explores the identity construction and subject positions of gay male foster and adoptive parents. Using late twentieth and early twenty-first century cultural texts, I apply a Foucaultian perspective to analyze how controversies over gay adoptions articulate shifts in contemporary American discourses of homosexuality and the family. Identities available to homosexuals have shifted since the nineteenth century; this thesis looks at the emergence of a new contested identity for homosexuals as adoptive parents at the turn of the twenty-first century by employing Foucaultian methodological techniques of archaeology. This work contributes to the sociological literature on gender, law, and the …
Labor Violations And Discrimination In The Clark County Outcall Entertainment Industry, Candice Michelle Seppa Arroyo
Labor Violations And Discrimination In The Clark County Outcall Entertainment Industry, Candice Michelle Seppa Arroyo
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Researchers who insist that sexual exploitation is intrinsic to sex work have deflected attention from two key issues facing sex workers: labor violations and prejudice. The purpose of this study is to investigate unethical labor practices and institutional sexism, racism, and classism in the Clark County outcall entertainment ("escort") industry. To analyze these issues from a sex radical feminist perspective, I spent 820 hours engaged in covert participant observation while working as an appointment setter at two major outcall entertainment agencies in Clark County; Much of the abuse that outcall entertainers in Las Vegas encounter could be eliminated by enforcing …
Women Recovering In Alcoholics Anonymous: The Impact Of Social Bonding, Tina Marie Wininger
Women Recovering In Alcoholics Anonymous: The Impact Of Social Bonding, Tina Marie Wininger
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the process of same-sex bonding within the Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) women's community. More specifically, this research measures the impact of same-sex bonding on life-satisfaction and length of sobriety for alcoholic women in A.A. Linear regression analyses of survey data from female A.A. members (N = 293) indicate (1) a statistically significant relationship between Respondents' same-sex social bonding and life-satisfaction, and (2) that the effect of this social bonding on the number of years respondents have remained sober is mediated by life-satisfaction. Therefore, it is likely that higher female bonding scores among women lead to higher life-satisfaction and, …
Converging Behaviorist And Constructivist Theories In Classroom Settings, Lisa M Freitas
Converging Behaviorist And Constructivist Theories In Classroom Settings, Lisa M Freitas
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Educators attempts to meet the needs of all students become more difficult as school districts are forced to reduce spending which may result in increased class sizes, elimination of second language and enrichment programs, and a reduction in school personnel at school sites. With these budget cuts the demands placed on educators will be even greater. Teachers will be forced to implement new strategies to ensure that no child is left behind. The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of converging behaviorist and constructvist theories into classroom management and instructional practices. Three groups of students were randomly …

One week later and immediately prior to running 200 meters again, participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: (1) statements delivered by research assistants related to technical skills and motivational statements, (2) questions related to what the participant is experiencing, and (3) statements expected to …
Power, Legitimation, And Drawing Distinctions: Rendering Of 'Public' And 'Private' In United States Domestic Violence Policymaking, Christina R Drum
Power, Legitimation, And Drawing Distinctions: Rendering Of 'Public' And 'Private' In United States Domestic Violence Policymaking, Christina R Drum
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Contested claims about the public/private distinction have always been central to liberal democratic principles, to feminist ideologies, and (more narrowly) to domestic violence policymaKing Historically, treatment of domestic violence as a phenomenon that is relegated to the so-called 'private sphere' has served as justification for limiting such public policy remedies as prevention, intervention and recovery initiatives; From the grassroots battered women's movements of the 1970s to the current network of shelters, community agencies and advocacy groups, the last several decades have seen significant progress toward increasing public and political awareness of domestic violence. In the United States, many of these …
Exploring Nevada's Past And Present: Archaeology Education And Nevada Public Schools, Victoria L Fisher
Exploring Nevada's Past And Present: Archaeology Education And Nevada Public Schools, Victoria L Fisher
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
State mandated education concerning the first Nevadans begins in the fourth grade. A series of content standards, or guidelines which identify what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade, has been developed by the state to assist teachers in meeting this requirement. Though Native Americans are covered in roughly a third of the content standards, there are very few materials available to meet these standards. While there are many materials that attempt to teach the "prehistory" of native Nevada, there are few that are designed to meet the standards that the state has …

Agglomeration, Labor Supply, And The Urban Rat Race, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange
Agglomeration, Labor Supply, And The Urban Rat Race, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange
Center for Policy Research
This paper establishes the existence of a previously overlooked relationship between agglomeration and hours worked. Among non-professionals, hours worked decrease with the density of workers in the same occupation. Among professionals, a positive relationship is found. This relationship is twice as strong for the young as for the middle-aged. Moreover, young professional hours worked are shown to be especially sensitive to the presence of rivals. We show that these patterns are consistent with the selection of hard workers into cities and the high productivity of agglomerated labor. The behavior of young professionals is also consistent with the presence of keen …
Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth: The Proof Is In The Productivity, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Chihwa Kao
Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth: The Proof Is In The Productivity, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Chihwa Kao
Center for Policy Research
Popular and policy discussions have focused extensively on "entrepreneurship." While entrepreneurship is often viewed from the perspective of the individual's benefits--an increase in standard of living, flexibility in hours, and so forth--much of the policy interest derives from the presumption that entrepreneurs provide economy-wide benefits in the form of new products, lower prices, innovations, and increased productivity. How large are these effects? Using a rich panel of state-level data, we quantify the relationship between productivity growth--by state and by industry--and entrepreneurship. Specifically, we use state-of-the-art econometric techniques for panel data to determine whether variations in the birth rate and death …
On The Measurment Of Job Risk In Hedonic Wage Models, Dan Black, Thomas J. Kniesner
On The Measurment Of Job Risk In Hedonic Wage Models, Dan Black, Thomas J. Kniesner
Center for Policy Research
We examine the incidence, form, and research consequences of measurement error in measure of fatal injury risk in United States workplaces using both BLS and NIOSH data. We find evidence of substantial measurement errors in the fatality risk researchers attach to individual workers when estimating the implicit price of risk and the value of a statistical life. We first examine possible classical attenuation bias in the fatality risk coefficient. However, because we also find non-classical measurement error that differs across multiple risk measures and is not independent of other regressors, more complex statistical procedures than a standard instrumental variables estimator …
