Simulating Passenger Movement In Aircraft Cabins Using Cellular Automata Models, Kevin Quigley, Samantha Mauk
Simulating Passenger Movement In Aircraft Cabins Using Cellular Automata Models, Kevin Quigley, Samantha Mauk
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Efficient boarding and deboarding are critical to reducing aircraft turnaround time and improving airport operations. This ongoing study uses a cellular automata (CA) framework to model passenger movement dynamics under different strategies and aircraft configurations. Each passenger is represented as an autonomous agent occupying discrete cells and following simple local rules that collectively give rise to emergent flow patterns. We present our initial implementation of this CA-based model and discuss its potential to systematically explore key parameters such as seat assignment strategies (e.g., back-to-front, outside-in, random), aisle width, luggage storage delays, and passenger cooperation levels in future work.

A Study Of Zomi Pentecostalism In Its Social, Cultural, And Political Context: A Pentecostal Quest For The Lost Paradise, Thang San Mung
A Study Of Zomi Pentecostalism In Its Social, Cultural, And Political Context: A Pentecostal Quest For The Lost Paradise, Thang San Mung
College of Theology and Ministry Dissertations, Projects, & Theses
This dissertation examines the paradisal quest of the Zomi people, an ethnic Christian minority in Myanmar, through the lens of Pentecostal spirituality. Historically, the Zomi have experienced political displacement, loss of their ancestral homeland (Zogam), and ongoing marginalization. While existing scholarship has primarily interpreted Zomi struggles in terms of ethnic identity, nationalism, and socio-political resistance, this study offers a theological reorientation by interpreting Zomi paradisal longing through the Spirit-Restored Paradise framework, a Pentecostal theological model developed here. Employing a qualitative ethnographic methodology grounded in contextual theology, the research draws on semi-structured interviews with twenty-four Zomi Pentecostal participants from Myanmar and …

Capital Projects As Catalysts For Strategic Change And Transformation In Higher Education, Lora Strigens
Capital Projects As Catalysts For Strategic Change And Transformation In Higher Education, Lora Strigens
Dissertations (1934 -)
University campuses and their physical environments are a visible and symbolic representation of institutions. As the higher education landscape continues to shift and faces ongoing disruption, many institutions are considering significant strategic changes or broad transformation to remain competitive and thrive. As campuses around the country contend with aging buildings and infrastructure, they also have strategic priorities related to the changing needs and expectations of students, and the nature of teaching, learning, and research. Among these complex challenges, there is an opportunity to consider how institutions can leverage investment in the physical campus as a catalyst to support the strategic …
Shame On You! The Socialization Of Self-Conscious Emotions In Early Childhood, Ashton K. Allen
Shame On You! The Socialization Of Self-Conscious Emotions In Early Childhood, Ashton K. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined how parents and children discuss self-conscious emotions across early childhood. Self-conscious emotions such as shame, guilt, embarrassment, awe, and pride play a critical role in children's social and emotional development. Although prior research has demonstrated links between parent and child emotion talk about basic emotions such as happiness, anger, disgust, fear, sadness, less is known about how parents and children talk about self-conscious emotions. Participants for the current study were 247 parent-child dyads. The dyads completed a wordless storybook task designed to elicit discussion of five self-conscious emotions (shame, guilt, embarrassment, awe, and pride) annually across three …
When The States Lost Their Senate: The Seventeenth Amendment, Katelyn King
When The States Lost Their Senate: The Seventeenth Amendment, Katelyn King
Honors College Theses
To what extent has the Seventeenth Amendment impacted American federalism? The Seventeenth Amendment changed the way United States Senators are chosen from state legislature appointment to popular direct election. However, the framers of the U.S. Constitution established the original method for selecting U.S. Senators to safeguard an important principle in America’s government: federalism. If the Seventeenth Amendment decreased direct state influence in the federal government, it could have weakened federalism in America; consequently, the amendment may have altered how the American system of government is supposed to function. The U.S. Senate’s selection process was not only a safeguard for federalism …
Fostering A Sense Of Belonging Through Culturally Engaging Campus Environments, Rebeca Barajas-Juarez
Fostering A Sense Of Belonging Through Culturally Engaging Campus Environments, Rebeca Barajas-Juarez
Masters Projects
Latinx college students are the fastest growing student population, enrolling into college at higher rates than any other group, yet their retention rates are concerningly low (Almanzar & Ruedas-Gracia, 2024). Research has shown that Latinx students disproportionately experience hostile campus climates and feel the negative effect on their sense of belonging (Hurtado & Carter, 1997). Additionally, Latinx students at predominantly white institutions regularly encounter challenges that lead to feelings of isolation and a higher likelihood of departing from college (Benavides et al., 2024). This project uses Samuel D. Museus’ (2014) Culturally Engaging Campus Environment (CECE) Model as the main framework …
A Phenomenological Study Of Digital Divide In Rural Philippines, Dennis Dizon
A Phenomenological Study Of Digital Divide In Rural Philippines, Dennis Dizon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The digital divide reflects policy relevant disparities in access to and effective use of internet based information resources, as experienced and interpreted by individuals navigating regulatory environments and governance conditions in the rural Philippines. Policymakers need to understand how the digital divide affects business owners and working-class people, with the impact of high costs and poor internet infrastructure in remote areas of the Philippines. Many of these business owners and working-class people lack access to the privileges and benefits of high-speed internet access. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of these business owners …
Do We Even Know What ‘Even’ Does? A Ca Investigation, Emily Johnson
Do We Even Know What ‘Even’ Does? A Ca Investigation, Emily Johnson
Comm-entary
Emily is a Senior communication major with a Business Administration minor. She is originally from Merrimack, NH, and is planning on working in PR or something similar when she graduates in May.
What does “even” do in conversation? This study shows that when used mid-turn, “even” functions as a systematic device for intensifying stance. Analyzing naturally occurring interactions, I demonstrate how speakers use “even” to upgrade assessments, noticings, and complaints, making them more extreme or noteworthy. Recipients consistently orient to this intensification through agreement, accounts, or escalation. Even when the upgrade is left incomplete, others step in to realize it, …

Legalistic Noncompliance, Daniel T. Deacon, Leah M. Litman
Duke Law Journal
Will the executive branch comply with court orders? That question has garnered a considerable amount of attention over the first few months of the second Trump administration. But what does it mean to comply? And what if a form of noncompliance is already occurring?
This Article documents an emerging practice that has dominated the second Trump administration's approach to unfavorable court rulings, a practice this Article calls legalistic noncompliance. Legalistic noncompliance occurs when the administration uses the language of the law as cover to claim that it is complying with court orders when in fact it is not. Drawing …

Creating An Enabling Environment For Digital Learners In Higher Education In Uganda, Patricia Isabirye, Mary-Anne Isabirye
Howard University Journal of African Studies (HUJAS)
The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted learning in various institutions in Uganda, which saw the temporary closure of tertiary institutions and the adoption of digital learning, which posed access challenges especially for under-privileged groups. Uninterrupted learning was hampered in various forms for university students due to the lack of affordable digital tools for majority of these learners, inadequate digital facilities within tertiary institutions, and the temporary halt of contact classes by the government. The article explores challenges and opportunities experienced because of the digital approach to learning in Uganda, and proposes user-friendly but affordable solutions to digital literacy, while promoting equitable …
The Celebrity Fantasy: Digital Identity, Performance, And Catfish Deception, Erin L. Dutton
The Celebrity Fantasy: Digital Identity, Performance, And Catfish Deception, Erin L. Dutton
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper examines how celebrity fantasy shapes digital identity and contributes to vulnerability in catfishing scenarios. Using ideological criticism, this study analyzes two episodes of MTV’s Catfish involving celebrity impersonation to explore how digital spaces make it easy to perform a public persona. Research on online identity and parasocial relationships argues that people often feel close to celebrities and are drawn to the fantasy of being noticed by them. In these episodes, the fantasy becomes a tool for deception. Findings suggest that catfishers rely on celebrity tropes to gain appeal, while victims are pulled in by the thrill and validation …

Markets, Globalization & Development Review
The contemporary globally interconnected economy is fundamentally changing international trade and opening up new prospects for businesses, particularly Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs). The basic concept of global business is changing in the modern world due to the digital environment. To preserve their competitive advantage both domestically and internationally, businesses must look for new opportunities. Since the usage of digital technology is causing entrepreneurial processes to become more fluid and irregular over time and space, our research chose a conceptual approach to examine how the digitalization of MSMEs would benefit decision-makers in global organizations. Using a conceptual approach, as …

Accounting For Non-Monetary Exchange: A Systematic Review Of Barter Literature From Colonial Ledgers To Digital Economies, Christian Timotius Peilouw, Unti Ludigdo, Imam Subekti, Yeney Widya Prihatiningtias
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Non-monetary exchange systems persist throughout human history, challenging assumptions about monetary dominance and revealing fundamental limitations in conventional accounting frameworks. This systematic literature review examines how accounting practices adapt to and shape non-monetary exchange across diverse historical and contemporary contexts, investigating patterns in accounting practices, challenges to conventional theory, and implications for economic resilience. Following PRISMA guidelines, the review analyzed 28 peer-reviewed articles from 1979 to 2025 identified through Scopus database searches combining barter-related and accounting terms. The analysis reveals four major themes: historical foundations showing sophisticated proto-banking systems in colonial America that operated without currency; crisis-driven alternatives demonstrating how …

Engaging Young People In Sustainable Finance: Opening Up Opportunities For Transformation, Allison Guerette
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
The field of sustainable finance could benefit from more meaningful engagement with young people, who offer a unique perspective and have a vested interest in addressing climate change and other global issues that will shape their future. In this post-qualitative study, three young people document what they see, hear, and experience as they attend a symposium for experts on sustainable finance and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing. These raw tellings are used in the cocreation of a youth sustainable finance assemblage and analysis tool, which the young people then apply to the Return on Sustainable Investment (ROSI™) methodology. Relationality, …

Exploring Occupational Therapy’S Role In Addressing Mental Health Disparities And Emergency Service Utilization Among Homeless Populations: A Comprehensive Review, Megan Darnell
Capstone Projects
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession focused on enabling individuals to engage in meaningful activities and roles through a client-centered approach. This doctoral capstone experience (DCE) was completed in the Emergency Department (ED) at Bronson Methodist Hospital, where individuals experiencing homelessness frequently present with unmet mental health needs. A gap was identified in the accessibility and utilization of community-based mental health and social resources, contributing to repeated ED utilization. The purpose of this DCE was to examine how resource provisions impact the frequency of ED visits and engagement with community mental health services among this population. Objectives include developing …

The Contested Terrain Of Sport For Development And ‘Peace’ Amidst Persistent Global Aid Cuts And Geopolitical Tensions, Derrick Charway, Umair Asif, Zohreh Khani, Mazen Alkhatib
Journal of Global South Sport Studies
Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) has emerged as a global concept for advancing humanitarian, peacebuilding and social benefits, particularly in disadvantaged communities and conflict-affected regions of the world. Yet, its promise is often entangled with the broader contradictions of international aid, which in the Global South often shifts from solidarity to systems shaped by power asymmetries, geopolitics and self-interests. Drawing on critical aid theory and decolonial thought, foregrounded in the Palestine context, we argue that SDP offers potential benefits but remains constrained by the very systemic issues it purports to redress. Further, we critique the International Olympic Committee’s stance …

Evaluating The Feasibility And Preliminary Effectiveness Of A Tailored Diabetes Education Program For Rural Residents, Brittany L. Smalls, Oluwatosin Leshi, Suraksha Khanal, Grejika E. Abram-Erby
Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Diabetes is a top ten Rural Healthy People 2030 priority for health improvement among rural Americans. Socioeconomic, environmental, geographic and political barriers contribute to the type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence and its disparate impact in rural communities. However, promoting proper self-care behaviors via self-management education can help people with diabetes better manage their condition.
Purpose: To account for the social environmental factors that affect rural residents, a tailored diabetes education program was developed, and the program’s effectiveness in improving diabetes knowledge and T2D-related health outcomes was assessed.
Methods: Using data collected from Appalachian Kentucky residents enrolled in a six-week, …
Starting With Story, Not Symptom: Narrative Collapse And Cultural Repair In Appalachia, Wayne Coombs Ph.D.
Starting With Story, Not Symptom: Narrative Collapse And Cultural Repair In Appalachia, Wayne Coombs Ph.D.
Journal of Appalachian Health
Appalachia’s opioid crisis reflects uneven burdens, especially in distressed coalfield counties, and it cannot be solved by symptom tracking alone. This commentary argues for a narrative shift, starting with story and cultural repair alongside clinical care. Narrative collapse is defined here as the loss of shared, dependable public meaning across groups, not the absence of storytelling in families, churches, and recovery circles. Trauma science suggests that chronic threat reshapes nervous systems across generations, making safety a prerequisite for renewed trust. Drawing on narrative identity research, the piece proposes peer story work as infrastructure that can reduce shame, support treatment engagement, …
250 Years Of Political Assassinations: An Exploratory Look Into Attacks On Political Figures In The United States, Jj Wesley
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Despite the salience of political assassinations in American history and culture, there isn’t a database that focuses on them, and those that do exist often lack detail and focus on broad trends over locations and time. This absence of centralized information has led to the creation of a database on these rare events, which contains political assassinations between 1777 and 2026. The cases rely heavily on a variety of open-source data, which includes books, newspapers, databases, and other relevant information and documents. This presentation will be an exploratory descriptive analysis that emphasizes a general overview of contextual trends in these …
Distinguishing Abstract And Concrete Democracy: Racial Attitudes And Democratic Support In The United States, Heather Lyons
Distinguishing Abstract And Concrete Democracy: Racial Attitudes And Democratic Support In The United States, Heather Lyons
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
As scholars and democratic observers warn of democratic backsliding and authoritarian governance in the United States, one leading explanation is that historical and enduring racial hierarchies shape racial attitudes that influence democratic support. The need to precisely measure support for democratic ideals and institutions has become critical to understand the precise influences currently causing the backsliding here and around the globe. Building on recent scholarly elucidations distinguishing abstract from concrete democracy, this study uses the 2024 ANES study to examine the relationship between various racial attitudes and support for abstract and concrete democracy separately. I also examine interactions between racial …
