Incorporating Sampling Weights Into The Generalizability Theory For Large-Scale Analyses, Christopher W. T. Chiu, Ronald S. Fesco May 2003

Incorporating Sampling Weights Into The Generalizability Theory For Large-Scale Analyses, Christopher W. T. Chiu, Ronald S. Fesco

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Large scale studies frequently use complex sampling procedures, disproportionate sampling weights, and adjustment techniques to account for potential bias due to nonresponses and to ensure that results from the sample can be generalized to a larger population. Survey researchers are concerned about measurement error and the use of weights in developing models. Consequently, multiple weighting factors are used and these weighting factors are manifested as a final survey (composite) weight available for analysis. We developed a method to incorporate an external weighting factor like this for analyses of measurement errors in the theory of generalizability to provide researchers with a …

Comparison Of Written And Oral Examinations In A Baccalaureate Medical-Surgical, Patricia Rushton, Dennis L. Eggett May 2003

Comparison Of Written And Oral Examinations In A Baccalaureate Medical-Surgical, Patricia Rushton, Dennis L. Eggett

Faculty Publications

Nursing students traditionally have been evaluated with an objective written examination. This method has shown some benefits and disadvantages. This project examined the value of oral examinations in evaluating nursing students. Five groups of students were evaluated with different forms of testing, some with only written tests, others with only oral examinations, some with a combination of both types of evaluations. The results showed that oral examinations can effectively evaluate the student's comprehension and application of clinical information in a clinical situation, as shown in higher test results, compared with oral written examinations, and positive student comments. Oral examination can …

International Drug Trafficking: Police Corruption On The Us/Mexico Border, John Jacob Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this thesis was to examine contemporary extralegal factors for the causation of drug-specific police corruption, particularly drug trafficking on the US/Mexico Border. Police included only those officers who were commissioned by municipalities. The researcher focused on a particular geographical area of the US border region consisting of a quad-county area, which includes Willacy, Starr, Hidalgo, and Cameron Counties. This region was ideal for its unique demographic composition and location. This is qualitative research based on grounded theory, which consisted of purposive and snowball sampling. There was no hypothesis due to the inductive nature of this research. The …

Learning That Matters, Shelley H. Billig May 2003

Learning That Matters, Shelley H. Billig

Special Topics, General

In Georgia, kindergarten and first-grade students conduct a community mapping activity to figure out the needs of the children within the school. Kindergartners new to the school say that the school layout is confusing and it is hard to find their way to the classrooms. Each class considers solutions, and students decide to label the hallways with street signs. Each class brainstorms potential names for the hallways, and first grade students design and conduct a survey. They eliminate names that do not represent positive images. (No Shock Street because it would scare the five-year-olds.) The surveys are administered, the data …

In 2000, DoZa Ana Branch Community College (DABCC) received a grant from the American Association of Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning program to develop service learning in southern New Mexico. Poised on the United States- Mexico border, DABCC serves a population that includes 40% colonia residents. Colonias are communities within 150 miles of the border that lack basic infrastructure such as paved roads, water and sewage treatment facilities, and adequate housing. DABCC has developed community partnerships with colonia residents and with agencies that provide services within the colonias. In their presentation, a DABCC team will describe service learning …

Nella Larsen’S Passing: The Themes Of Passing And The Tragic Mulatto., Kimberly Barron-Brown May 2003

Nella Larsen’S Passing: The Themes Of Passing And The Tragic Mulatto., Kimberly Barron-Brown

Theses (Pre-2016)

Author Nella Larsen's Passing, her second novel, is a work that is closely related to her personal life. Her light skin afforded her the opportunity to probably pass for a white woman. Although she was considered legally black she wanted to be able to identify herself with both races black and white. Since she related some of her own personal ideas, thoughts and beliefs in Passing, the success of the novel was an even greater achievement. In Passing, Larsen relates the themes of passing and the tragic mulatto myth to encapsulate the struggle with the conflicts of American racism and …

Is It Time For Unlv To Reform Its Classified Personnel System?, John H. Mueller May 2003

Is It Time For Unlv To Reform Its Classified Personnel System?, John H. Mueller

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is a fast growing institution and is the largest public university in Nevada. However, it cannot create its own rules for the administration of its classified personnel system. Many large public universities possess this ability and function independently. This is in direct contrast to the traditional role of other state agencies and the administration of civil service rules for their classified personnel. This paper addresses the prevalence of independent classified personnel systems in public universities and presents a review of current movements in that direction. The paper also presents a case study of …

The Economic Impact Of The Adult Dance Establishments On The Community, Christina Henry

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The study attempts to answer some fundamental questions about the adult dance establishments. That is, whether the adult dance establishments add or subtract to the well being of the community. In order to accomplish this it is necessary to determine the benefits and costs of the adult dance establishments on the community and more specifically find out if benefits outweigh the costs. In this study it was decided to make use of the readily available information from the government agencies. The government collects license fees and property taxes from these establishments. Based on the analyses it was concluded that the …

Consumptive Water Use At The Mirage Hotel And The Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino In Las Vegas, Nevada, Johann A. Feller May 2003

Consumptive Water Use At The Mirage Hotel And The Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino In Las Vegas, Nevada, Johann A. Feller

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Las Vegas Valley is one of the driest regions in the southwest United States. Due to limited water supplies from the Colorado River, rainfall, and groundwater sources, the water requirements of the valley’s growing population is slated to surpass the current available water supply. The purpose of this comparative study is to quantify the amount of consumptive water used at a major Las Vegas resort/casino in one year. This, being of importance, because of the resort/casino industry’s role as one of the largest, most visible, and most resource intensive industries in the Las Vegas valley. The goal of this …

The Role Social Capital Plays In Building Effective Nonprofit Boards, Susan Williams May 2003

The Role Social Capital Plays In Building Effective Nonprofit Boards, Susan Williams

Student Scholarship

There is widespread concern over the effectiveness of nonprofit boards of trustees. Scholars and practitioners have continued to address the phenomenon of board ineffectiveness by continuing to clarify roles and responsibilities for individuals rather than focusing on the impact of the cohesive ties amongst board members and the ability of the board to work as a unit with shared values and trust resulting in value creation for the institution. In this paper I seek to contribute to the body of knowledge by developing the following arguments: (1) the appropriate ties amongst board members are integral to the ability to discuss …

Motion Without Movement: The Struggle For Workforce Outcomes That Matter, Adekunle O. Solaru May 2003

Motion Without Movement: The Struggle For Workforce Outcomes That Matter, Adekunle O. Solaru

Student Scholarship

This study seeks to better define the processes by which poor African Americans on welfare can achieve employment success. Beginning with a conceptual model inspired by the stated goals of workforce programs, the study uses interviews of unemployed and employed African Americans to contest the thrust of workforce efforts by contrasting program goals with the respondents' realities. Hypotheses, stated in terms that can be agreed on by workforce practitioners and their clients, are developed to propose a reconciliation of objectives. These hypotheses therefore form a basis for testing of the relationships by quantitative means in a subsequent research phase.

Social Networks And Information Technology, James L. Hill May 2003

Social Networks And Information Technology, James L. Hill

Student Scholarship

That so many large-scale or enterprise – level Information Technology (IT) projects are said to fail is a puzzle. According to the Standish Group and individual practitioners, as many as four out of five of them do. They don’t deliver the planned functionality, cost much more than budgeted, take longer than expected, or are cancelled before they are completed. (Chaos, 1995) Yet, businesses and governments continue to invest heavily in IT, expecting significant improvements in productivity and level of service. (Stiglitz, Orszag, & Orszag, 2000). As much as half of annual capital spending in certain sectors of the economy is …

A Reflection Of Trust: Analyzing The Role Of Customers And Sales Manager On Salesperson Trust-Building Behaviors, Daniel Cohen May 2003

A Reflection Of Trust: Analyzing The Role Of Customers And Sales Manager On Salesperson Trust-Building Behaviors, Daniel Cohen

Student Scholarship

Trust has received a great deal of attention in the marketing literature over the past ten years especially in regard to relationship marketing. In fact, “the development and maintenance of marketing relationships has been the focus of extensive conceptual and empirical work, and trust has been established as a key component in the development of buyer-seller relationships” (Brashear, Boles, Bellenger & Brooks, 2003, p.189). Previous studies, however, have generally focused on how salespeople build trust with customers (Doney & Cannon, 1997; Ganesan, 1994) without considering other components of the relationship such as the behaviors of customers engaged in long-term sales …

Public Independent Fact-Finding: A Trust-Generating Institution For An Age Of Corporate Illegitimacy And Public Mistrust, R. William Ide Iii, Douglas H. Yarn May 2003

Public Independent Fact-Finding: A Trust-Generating Institution For An Age Of Corporate Illegitimacy And Public Mistrust, R. William Ide Iii, Douglas H. Yarn

Vanderbilt Law Review

Public distrust in the wake of corporate scandals caused corporate legitimacy crises for the companies involved and for the marketplace as a whole. The loss of trust has contributed to an environment in which traditional responses to allegations of wrongdoing and incompetence are less effective. Alternatively, organizations engage in "Public independent fact-finding" ("PIFF") by hiring public figures with reputations for integrity to conduct internal investigations and to report their findings to the public. This Article describes the role played by trust, reputation, and social legitimacy in the health of organizations and examines corporate legitimacy crises and traditional responses. Identifying factors …

Artifacts And Cultures-Of-Use In Intercultural Communication, Steven L. Thorne May 2003

Artifacts And Cultures-Of-Use In Intercultural Communication, Steven L. Thorne

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article develops a conceptual framework for understanding how intercultural communication, mediated by cultural artifacts (i.e., Internet communication tools), creates compelling, problematic, and surprising conditions for additional language learning. Three case studies of computer-mediated intercultural engagement draw together correlations between discursive orientation, communicative modality, communicative activity, and emergent interpersonal dynamics. These factors contribute to varying qualities and quantities of participation in the intercultural partnerships. Case one, "Clashing Frames of Expectation -- Differing Cultures-of-Use," suggests that the cultures-of-use of Internet communication tools, their perceived existence and on-going construction as distinctive cultural artifacts, differs interculturally just as communicative genre, pragmatics, and institutional …

Islam And Politics In Modern Egypt: A Chance For Democracy, Madalina C. Hanes May 2003

Islam And Politics In Modern Egypt: A Chance For Democracy, Madalina C. Hanes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper analyzes the role played by moderate Islamic groups in modem Egypt and tries to make a distinction between moderate, middle-of-the road groups and radical, extremist ones. There are several questions regarding the topic analyzed in this thesis. Is Islam inherently incompatible with the Western democratic values? Is there a difference between moderate and radical Islamic movements? Is the Muslim Brotherhood promoting an Islamic democracy and would that stabilize and improve the tormented Egyptian society? Based of library research of primary and secondary sources, this thesis argues that moderate Islamic groups, like the Muslim Brotherhood, represent the best hope …

Seniors In Public Housing, Jan Mutchler, Francis G. Caro May 2003

Seniors In Public Housing, Jan Mutchler, Francis G. Caro

Gerontology Institute Publications

In recent years, the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) discovered that nearly 40% of the seniors (residents aged 62 and over) living in their public housing developments were living in family housing developments rather than in senior/disabled housing developments. Administrators at the BHA were aware that some seniors lived in family developments, but they were committed to learning more systematically about this population and their needs. They turned to the Gerontology Institute at the University at Massachusetts Boston as a partner in this effort. With funding from the Boston Foundation, the collaboration resulted in a research and policy development effort on …
