Charting The Growth Of Canada’S Aboriginal Populations: Problems, Options And Implications, Eric Guimond, Don Kerr, Roderic Beaujot May 2003

Charting The Growth Of Canada’S Aboriginal Populations: Problems, Options And Implications, Eric Guimond, Don Kerr, Roderic Beaujot

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Toward the end of the 20th century, the number of persons reporting Aboriginal ancestry in the Canadian Census increased in a rather dramatic manner. For example, in the 2001 Canadian Census, over 1.3 million Canadians reported an Aboriginal origin, which is an increase of about 20 percent over the previous census in 1996. Given that much confusion and inadequate information characterises public discussions of the demographics of Canada’s Aboriginal population, this paper will review the most fundamental data sources and definitions that have been used in documenting the characteristics of this population, as well as outline some of the most …

Relative Participation Of Men And Women In Paid And Unpaid Work: An Analysis Of Variations By Individual, Family And Community Characteristics, Roderic Beaujot, Zenaida R. Ravanera

PSC Discussion Papers Series

On the basis of the 1998 General Social Survey on Time Use, the relative participation in paid and unpaid work of partners in a household is classified into three types: complementary wherein one partner, usually the wife, does more unpaid work while the other partner does more paid work; double burden wherein one partner does more unpaid work while doing more or the same amount of paid work; and shared roles wherein both partners do about the same amount unpaid work. Couples who are cohabiting, and couples where both partners are working fulltime, have a higher likelihood of both shared …

Family Change And Economic Well-Being In Canada: The Case Of Recent Immigrant Families With Children, Jianye Liu, Don Kerr May 2003

Family Change And Economic Well-Being In Canada: The Case Of Recent Immigrant Families With Children, Jianye Liu, Don Kerr

PSC Discussion Papers Series

This paper examines the relationship between family change and economic well-being among recent immigrant families with children to Canada over the 1977-1997 period. Defining recent immigrants as those having migrated within the past decade, this study documents a substantial decline in the average level of economic well being of immigrants who migrated during the 1990s relative to those who migrated in the 1970s and 1980s. Whereas the average income to needs ratio of all Canadian families with children is up modestly over this period, this same generalization is not true when shifting our emphasis to recent immigrants. In this context, …

The Ignored Disease: The Aids Epidemic 1981–1987, Heather L. Graff, Heather Graff Bloom

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

Less than six months after Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the 40th president of the United States, the federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta reported pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, in five gay men. In the United States, AIDS was first diagnosed among gay men in New York City and San Francisco. There were several media trends for AIDS coverage in the 1980s. In the early 1980s, AIDS was mainly thought of as a gay-related disease. In the mid- l 980s, AIDS cases were found in hemophiliacs, intravenous drug users and "celebrities." Coverage in the late 1980s focused on heterosexuals and …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Economic development is the development of tools and programs to promote growth within a specific geographic location. In today's society, the need for economic development is extremely important because the loss of the traditional family farm has changed the landscape of the labor force that currently exists throughout the United States. In addition, a continued pattern of rural to urban migration, of America's educated youth, has contributed to the overall decline of the skilled labor force that exists throughout small rural communities. Furthermore, economic development professionals need to develop tools, programs and practices that create un-skilled, semi-skilled, and skilled employment …

The Curricular Practices Of Early Childhood Teachers Working In Public Sschool Primary Grades., Elizabeth Ely Brading May 2003

The Curricular Practices Of Early Childhood Teachers Working In Public Sschool Primary Grades., Elizabeth Ely Brading

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about the curricular practices or thinking of early childhood teachers attempting to use developmentally appropriate practices in public school primary grades. The purpose of this study was to investigate four primary grade teachers' thoughts and classroom practices, through observation, interviews, and classroom schedules. Data were analyzed following the procedures for open, axial, and selective coding as explained by Strauss (1987). All four teachers exhibited common elements: educational beliefs consistent with those of the National Association for the Education of Young Children; frustration with their school's curriculum; and the combination of a rich pattern of guidance strategies in …

Moral Hazard, Hanming Fang, Giuseppe Moscarini May 2003

Moral Hazard, Hanming Fang, Giuseppe Moscarini

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We interpret workers’ confidence in their own skills as their morale, and investigate the implication of worker overconfidence on the firm’s optimal wage-setting policies. In our model, wage contracts both provide incentives and affect worker morale, by revealing private information of the firm about worker skills. We provide conditions for the non-differentiation wage policy to be profit-maximizing. In numerical examples, worker overconfidence is a necessary condition for the firm to prefer no wage differentiation, so as to preserve some workers’ morale; the non-differentiation wage policy itself breeds more worker overconfidence; finally, wage compression is more likely when aggregate productivity is …

The Effectiveness Of A Behavior Modification Program On Young Adolescents After Leaving A Residential Care Facility, Tiffany Bianca North

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

This mixed methodology design uses two methods (qualitative and quantitative) to study, describe, examine, and analyze the effectiveness of the Teaching Family Model, a token economy teaching method, on male adolescents leaving care, in regards to behavior and self-esteem. The convenient sample consisted of ten male adolescents living in Florida.

The researcher used the Self-Evaluation Scale Form A (Cautela et al, 1983) to determine the level on each of its seven domains (body image, perception of own learning, others' perception, adaptive functioning, self-worth, self confidence, and socials skills). The results of this scale for each participant were analyzed and compared. …

Worldview As A Key To Understanding Spiritual Warfare With The Emphasis On Sanctification And Evangelism, Albert Kwamena Essandoh May 2003

Worldview As A Key To Understanding Spiritual Warfare With The Emphasis On Sanctification And Evangelism, Albert Kwamena Essandoh

College of Theology and Ministry Dissertations, Projects, & Theses

An examination of current literary works on spiritual warfare within this decade shows that there has been a struggle in understanding the issues that evolve under this subject. Missiologists have presented reports that baffle western theologians; however. these phenomena are not new to the non-westem reader, and they persist. Most western theologians who have not encountered these phenomena discount these experiences, presenting arguments from a sanctification point of view.

Renowned contemporary scholars whose perspectives on worldviews, sanctification, and evangelism contribute to this research include Peter Wagner, Clinton Arnold, Derek Tidball, Howard Ervin, James Sire, John Stott, Andrew W. Hoffecker, Russell …

“Word Made Flesh”: Czech Women’S Writing From Communism To Post-Communism, Madelaine Hron May 2003

“Word Made Flesh”: Czech Women’S Writing From Communism To Post-Communism, Madelaine Hron

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article explores the changes in Czech women’s fiction from communism to post- communism, focusing in particular on Czech women writers’ relationship to literary discourse and feminism. It contends that women writers’ rapport to ideological discourse and literary production under communism is a determining factor in women’s relationship to both writing and feminism. It examines this literary legacy in terms of post-communism, surveying the differences between a totalitarian socialist regime and that of a materialist, capitalist economy, as exemplified in Czech women’s literature. The article offers a survey the major post-communist women writers, including Hodrová, Boučková, Kriseová, as well as …
