Lessons From Nepal: Partnership, Privilege And Potential, Jane H. Aiken

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Dramatic differences in culture present students with the opportunity to gain considerable perspective on their own perceptions and a chance to operate in a legal environment that, like most endeavors in the world today, has become increasingly globalized. This kind of experience has generally been missing in the training of our university law students. The students in Washington University's Civil Justice Clinic have provided legal services to women and children who have been victims of violence in a wide array of socio-economic settings. They have also worked on policy initiatives that shape government on city, state and federal levels. But …

"You Just Give Them What They Want And Pray They Don’T Kill You”: Street-Level Sex Workers’ Reports Of Victimization, Personal Resources And Coping Strategies, Rochelle L. Dalla Dr., Yan Xia, Heather Kennedy

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

Using both qualitative (in-depth, personal interviews) and quantitative (self-report survey indices) techniques, data were collected from 43 women involved in streetwalking prostitution. The purpose of the investigation was to examine exposure to violence and victimization among a particularly vulnerable female population across the life span. A secondary goal was to apply stress theory as an organizing frameworkfor examining personal resources (e.g., social support, locus of control) and coping behavior. Results from both data collection strategies are presented, and implications for intervention are described.

The Relationship Between Marital Satisfaction And Caregiver Burden In Parents Who Care For Adult Children With Development Disabilities, Jujuane M. Easter

Theses

This study examines the relationship between marital satisfaction and caregiver burden in parents of individuals with mental disabilities. Eighteen couples (18 women and 18 men) completed a demographic questionnaire, the Index of Marital Satisfaction (IMS), and the Caregiver's Burden Scale (CBS). It was hypothesized that there would be a negative correlation between marital satisfaction and caregiver burden. The correlations between the IMS scale and CBS scale were calculated for men and women separately. Findings indicate that the correlation for the IMS scale with the CBS scale for men was not statistically significant (.246). Also, the correlation for the IMS scale …

Geography, Industrial Organization, And Agglomeration, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange Jan 2003

Geography, Industrial Organization, And Agglomeration, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange

Center for Policy Research

This paper makes two contributions to the empirical literature on agglomeration economies. First, the paper uses a unique and rich database in conjunction with mapping software to measure the geographic extent of agglomerative externalities. Previous papers have been forced to assume that agglomeration economies are club goods that operate at a metropolitan scale. Second, the paper tests for the existence of organizational agglomeration economies of the kind studied qualitatively by Saxenian (1994). This is a potentially important source of increasing returns that previous empirical work has not considered. Results indicate that localization economies attenuate rapidly and that industrial organization affects …

Does Whole-School Reform Boost Student Performance? The Case Of New York City, Robert Bifulco, William Duncombe, John Yinger Jan 2003

Does Whole-School Reform Boost Student Performance? The Case Of New York City, Robert Bifulco, William Duncombe, John Yinger

Center for Policy Research

Thousands of schools around the country have implemented whole-school reform programs to boost student performance. This paper uses quasi-experimental methods to estimate the impact of whole-school reform on students' reading performance in New York City, where various reform programs were adopted in dozens of troubled elementary schools in the mid-1990s. This paper complements studies based on random assignment by examining a broad-based reform effort and explicitly accounting for implementation quality. Two popular reform programs--the School Development and Success for All--do not significantly increase reading scores but might have if they had been fully implemented. The More Effective Schools program does …

Do Public Expenditures Improve Child Outcomes In The U.S.? A Comparison Across Fifty States, Kristen Harknett, Irwin Garfinkel, Jay Bainbridge, Timothy Smeeding Jan 2003

Do Public Expenditures Improve Child Outcomes In The U.S.? A Comparison Across Fifty States, Kristen Harknett, Irwin Garfinkel, Jay Bainbridge, Timothy Smeeding

Center for Policy Research

Our paper utilizes variation across the 50 U.S. states to examine the relationship between public expenditures on children and child outcomes. We find that public expenditures on children are related to better child outcomes across a wide range of indicators, including measures of child mortality, elementary-school test scores, and adolescent behavioral outcomes. States that spend more on children have better child outcomes even after taking into account potential confounding influences. Our results are robust to numerous variations in model specifications and to the inclusion of proxies for unobserved characteristics of states. Our sensitivity analyses suggest that the results we present …

Intimate Violence As Intimate: The Journey And A Path, Linda G. Mills Jan 2003

Intimate Violence As Intimate: The Journey And A Path, Linda G. Mills

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article critiques the mainstream feminist approach to domestic violence, which frames it as a legal issue to be addressed primarily through the criminal justice system. It argues that this narrow formulation fails to account for the complexities and intimacies of domestic violence, particularly for marginalized groups like lesbians and reluctant victims. The author advocates for moving beyond legal solutions and embracing more nuanced, case-specific approaches that prioritize the unique needs and voices of those affected by intimate violence.

Prejudicial Attitudes Toward Homosexuals As A Function Of Religious Orientation, Jacqueline E. Mandra Jan 2003

Prejudicial Attitudes Toward Homosexuals As A Function Of Religious Orientation, Jacqueline E. Mandra

All Volumes (2001-2008)

This study investigated prejudicial attitudes toward homosexuals as a function of individuals' religious affiliation and orientation. It was predicted that intrinsically oriented individuals would be more prejudiced toward homosexuals than would extrinsically oriented individuals. This trend was expected more for Catholics than for Protestants. Students answered several questionnaires about their attitudes toward homosexuals and their religious beliefs. Although intrinsically oriented individuals were more prejudiced toward homosexuals than were extrinsically oriented individuals, this trend was stronger for Protestants than for Catholics. Understanding how prejudicial attitudes against homosexuals are formed may help to eliminate discrimination toward this group.

Community Integration And Normalization, Janice Eileen Cunningham Jan 2003

Community Integration And Normalization, Janice Eileen Cunningham

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Utilizing archived data for 650 individuals, psychosocial variables were examined to elucidate the effect of deinstitutionalization on success of community integration. Deinstitutionalization has been blamed for a host of societal ills including the burgeoning homeless population and for overcrowding in prisons. Many claim that deinstitutionalization has failed and that the chronically severely mentally ill have not become part of their communities. Utilizing extant data on consumers released from Pennsylvania state hospitals as part of a unique initiative, the psychosocial variables of age, race, gender, length of institutionalization, placement following hospitalization and diagnosis were correlated with homelessness, incarceration, or whereabouts known …

The Psychological Impact Of Companion Animals For Older Adults Who Reside Alone, Tess Reed Jan 2003

The Psychological Impact Of Companion Animals For Older Adults Who Reside Alone, Tess Reed

Theses : Honours

Companion animals have been identified as improving the physical and emotional health of some older adults (Collis & McNicholas, 1998). This qualitative study explored the psychological impact of owning a cat or a dog for persons aged 65 or older who resided alone. Nine participants, two male and seven female, were recruited through local media advertisements in the Guildford area to participate in a semi-structured interview about their relationship with their pet. Following transcription the semi-structured interviews were analysed using thematic analysis (Aronson, 1994). Four major themes emerged with participants reporting their pets provided satisfaction that impacted on several areas …
