Family-Centered Early Intervention : Principles And Process, Jody Albertson
Family-Centered Early Intervention : Principles And Process, Jody Albertson
Graduate Research Papers
This literature review begins by discussing the background and history of family-centered early intervention. State monitoring reports from the Office of Special Education Programs are discussed as evidence that there is a need for education and clarification regarding family-centered early intervention. Various viewpoints are reviewed regarding the definition and principles of family-centered services. The process of family-centered services is then discussed with a focus on assessment service delivery, and evaluation of services. In the discussion of family-centered assessment, the concept of family-centered assessment is discussed and various tools used in completing family-centered assessment are described. In the discussion of service …

Technological Remediation: Special Education High School Students And High-Stakes Testing, Yvonne Craycroft Kirk
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of the study was to investigate a skill-building program as a possible strategy for remediation. This study sought to help special education students pass the Graduate Qualifying Exam (GQE) in a large Indiana urban high school.
For 3 years, the researcher followed 2 groups of 10th-grade special education students who were taking the test for the first time. The scores were tracked each time the test was given to determine how many passed the test on the first attempt. The treatment group of students was assigned to a resource class by their teachers of record while in the …
Mental Health Assessment Of Minors In The Juvenile Justice System, Michael Jenuwine, Curtis Heaston, Diane N. Walsh, Gene Griffin
Mental Health Assessment Of Minors In The Juvenile Justice System, Michael Jenuwine, Curtis Heaston, Diane N. Walsh, Gene Griffin
Journal Articles
Recent reports recognize that children and adolescents with undiagnosed mental illnesses make up a significant proportion of youth in the juvenile justice system. In determining how to rehabilitate youth in the juvenile justice system, judges, lawyers, and probation officers are starting to look at mental health problems as one element contributing to delinquent behavior. It is becoming more common for attorneys to request “mental health assessments” for their juvenile clients. Problems arise, however, in determining what specifically constitutes such an assessment, and in deciding what to do with this information once it is obtained. In 2001, the Illinois Cook County …
Promoting Children's Interest Through A Responsible Research Agenda, Margaret F. Brinig
Promoting Children's Interest Through A Responsible Research Agenda, Margaret F. Brinig

I deeply wish to see more good empirical work in family law. If our system had all of the money in the world, I would wish to spend it to guarantee happy, healthy children. But since resources are scarce, and children's issues must compete with other interests that range from national security to care for the elderly, I would suggest spending a relatively modest amount to determine what programs would likely prove successful.
Usually public policy follows from the wishes of adults. In family law, this occurs although virtually all the legislation dealing with families and children begins with a …
Retribution: The Central Aim Of Punishment, Gerard V. Bradley
Retribution: The Central Aim Of Punishment, Gerard V. Bradley
Journal Articles
When I worked for the Manhattan District Attorney's Office in the early 1980s, criminal sentences were consistently and dramatically too lenient. Though those years marked the ebb tide for the rehabilitative ideal of punishment and indeterminate "zip-to-ten" sentences, only career felons and those convicted of the most serious crimes were candidates for the sentences they justly deserved. Hamstrung by apparently silly rules of constitutional etiquette and bureaucratic sclerosis, the police were eclipsed in the mind of the public by the cold-blooded Everyman, bound only by the law of the jungle and some elusive sense of justice. Ultimately, popular demand required …

OBJECTIVE: To examine in-depth the lives of women whose partners attempted to kill them, and to identify patterns that may aid in the clinician’s ability to predict, prevent, or counsel about femicide or attempted femicide. DESIGN: Qualitative analysis of 30 in-depth interviews. SETTING: Six U.S. cities. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty women, aged 17–54 years, who survived an attempted homicide by an intimate partner. Exploring The Importance Of Incorporating The Visual And Creative Arts Into Elementary School Curriculum, Emily Mcdaniel
Exploring The Importance Of Incorporating The Visual And Creative Arts Into Elementary School Curriculum, Emily Mcdaniel
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The target audience that my capstone report has been written for consists of elementary administrators and elementary instructors that do not already see the importance of arts integration in curriculum, and, hence, do little to employ the arts in their classrooms beyond a few finger paintings and holiday decorations. The primary intention of my report is to convey to elementary administrators and elementary instructors the importance of incorporating the visual and creative arts into elementary curriculum. The secondary intention of my capstone report is to illustrate that arts integration can be done easily, provided that the instructor is willing to …

The common law speaks to us in parables. Ours is Drummond v. Fulton County Department of Family and Children's Services. Just before Christmas 1973, a boy named Timmy was born to a white mother and a black father. A month later, his mother was declared unfit, and the Department of Family and Children Services placed Timmy with white foster parents - Robert and Mildred Drummond. The Drummonds were "excellent" and "loving" parents, and Timmy grew into "an extremely bright, highly verbal, outgoing 15-month baby boy." Then the Drummonds asked to adopt Timmy. The Department's reviews of the Drummonds' devotion …
What Is Treatment? : Understandings And Responses Of Workers To Child Sex Offenders, Casey Eyden
What Is Treatment? : Understandings And Responses Of Workers To Child Sex Offenders, Casey Eyden
Theses : Honours
With the field of sex offender treatment is in its infancy, there is a tack of clarity concerning nearly all aspects of offending behaviour, from theoretical frameworks that explain why the offending occurs, to the effectiveness of different treatment techniques. This study sought to gain insight into workers' understandings of the phenomenon of child sexual offending, and how these understandings informed their responses to child sex offender treatment. Locating the 'sense making' of workers within the context of a four dimensional systematic integration model; personal, professional, organisational and social influences and impacts were also explored. Currently practicing with child sex …

Toward A Unified Theory Of Cognition: A Kantian Analysis, Clayton Daniel Austin
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this paper is to provide classroom teachers a more unified theory of cognition. The current cognitive theories of information processing, schema theory, and constructivism exhibit limitations and a lack of cohesion that make their implications for teachers unclear. This paper will be presented in five sections. 1) The first describes problems with current cognitive theories and the need for a unified theory of cognition 2) The second provides a review of the literature of current cognitive theories. 3) The third section consists of research in the history of cognitive theory both in philosophy and psychology. 4) The …

The Relationship Of Job Satisfaction To Role Ambiguity And Role Conflict Among School Counselors, Lisa Marie Violanti
The Relationship Of Job Satisfaction To Role Ambiguity And Role Conflict Among School Counselors, Lisa Marie Violanti
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Elementary and secondary school counselors in the 16 smaller school districts in Nevada, excluding Clark County, were chosen for a study which investigated the nature and extent to which school counselors were experiencing role ambiguity and role conflict. It also investigated the extent to which these factors were related to counselors overall job satisfaction. A written instrument consisting of The Role Questionnaire (Rizzo, 1970) and the Teacher Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (Lester, 1984) was used with selected full-time K--12 counselors to measure role ambiguity and role conflict and their relationship to job satisfaction specifically in the areas of: colleagues, supervision, responsibility, …
