Monograph Series

It is significant that the African American Professors Program (AAPP) at the University of South Carolina is producing the third edition of its annual monograph series at this time-the fifth anniversary of AAPP. The program graciously accepts the challenge of putting into place a requirement for the scholars to produce quality research papers worthy of publication. This provides widespread visibility for them and enhances their curriculum vitae concurrently.

Scholars who have contributed manuscripts for this monograph are to be commended for adding this additional responsibility to their academic workload. Writing across disciplines adds to the intellectual diversity of these papers. …

Anthropological Research On Homosexuality In Latin America And The Lesbian Drought, Angela M. Meyer

Kaleidoscope

The goal of this paper is to document the significant contributors, contents, methodologies, developments, and theoretical frameworks relevant to the anthropological study of homosexuality in Latin America. Among other data, this research project yields regional accounts of gay / lesbian liberation movements, transvestitism, HIV I AIDS, and the intersections of gender and power in countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, and Argentina. Also included in this review are critical assessments of academic sources, ethical dilemmas faced by ethnographers, and spaces available for original research on homosexuality in Latin America. The Effects Of Race And Prejudice Level On The Influence Of Famous Figures, Lindsay B. Sharp Jan 2003

The Effects Of Race And Prejudice Level On The Influence Of Famous Figures, Lindsay B. Sharp

Kaleidoscope

We hypothesized that varying the race and prejudice level of a famous individual would alter participants' reactions to the individual, evaluation of the individual, and participants' performance on numerous measures of racism. One-hundred and fourteen White undergraduate students participated in a 2 x 2 (race of the famous individual: black or white x prejudice level of the individual's statement: prejudiced or non-prejudiced) independent groups factorial design. Our results showed that, for high-prejudiced famous figures, participants had more negative reactions toward the White individual than toward the Black, and felt significantly guiltier after reading the White individual's statement than after reading …

Effectiveness Of Educator-Oriented Content Courses, Joslyn K. Burt

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The idea of teaching science strikes fear into the hearts and minds of many elementary teachers; however, as a core piece of the overall curriculum, they cannot escape teaching science. The courses taken at the university and the professional development classes taken on the job play a critical role in helping educators feel comfortable teaching science. Such courses also impact how the content is taught by introducing the best practices used in science teaching.

As a Basic Science Minor in the College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa, I have taken many science content courses and several courses …

Social And Psychological Factors In Thai Students' Code Switching, Sumittra Suraratdecha Jan 2003

Social And Psychological Factors In Thai Students' Code Switching, Sumittra Suraratdecha

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

This paper examines Thai-English code-switching by eight Thai students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa by taking into account Bell's audience design factors (Bell 1984), speech accommodation theory (Giles & Smith 1979; Giles & Coupland 1991), and other psychosocial factors. Code-switching is defined here as an alternation between one language and another made by a speaker within a sentence, sentences, or a conversation. This paper proposes that code-switching is essentially an accommodative phenomenon; that is, speakers will switch into one language if they think it is appropriate to the topic or to their notions of self and addressee. Conversely, …

Words That Kill? Economic Perspectives On Hate Speech And Hate Crimes, Dhammika Dharmapala, Richard H. Mcadams Jan 2003

Words That Kill? Economic Perspectives On Hate Speech And Hate Crimes, Dhammika Dharmapala, Richard H. Mcadams

Economics Working Papers

This paper analyzes the conditions under which the level of hate speech (expressing hostility towards racial and other minorities) in society can influence whether individuals commit hate crimes against minorities. More generally, we explore the conditions under which speech can influence behavior by revealing social attitudes. We propose a model in which potential offenders care not only about the intrinsic benefits from the crime and the expected costs of punishment, but also about the esteem conferred by like-minded individuals. The number of such individuals is uncertain, but can (in certain circumstances) be inferred from the level of hate speech. We …

Rudolf Serkin: A Life, S. Lehmann, Marion J. Faber

German Studies Faculty Works

Pianist Rudolf Serkin, a virtuosic solo performer and chamber musician, captivated music lovers the world over for much of the twentieth century. Although he acquired a large and devoted public following, Serkin preferred to keep out of the spotlight, instead directing attention toward the music he loved. Dedicated to disseminating European classical music in America, Serkin became a committed teacher and director of major musical institutions. Rudolf Serkin: A Life, the first biography of this influential figure, offers an insightful analysis of Serkin's role in shaping American musical values and provides a rare glimpse into the life story of this …

Reflections On Khawar: Recognizing The Refugee From Family Violence, Stephen M. Knight Jan 2003

Reflections On Khawar: Recognizing The Refugee From Family Violence, Stephen M. Knight

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The High Court of Australia's recent Khawar decision marked a significant step forward in the progression toward universal recognition of gender violence as a legitimate basis for asylum. The guidelines regarding gender-related claims issued by the UNHCR in May 2002 further encouraged this progress. The Khawar decision recognized that asylum is appropriate when the applicant's home government persecutes the applicant by tolerating or condoning the violence of non-state actors. After Khawar, Australia stands with Canada, New Zealand, and the U.K. in recognizing gender violence as a basis for asylum. Adjudicators in the United States should note the tide and consider …

The Effects Of Negative Legacies On The Adjustment Of Parentally Bereaved Children And Adolescents, Phyllis R. Silverman, John Baker, Cheryl-Anne Cait, Kathrin Boerner Jan 2003

The Effects Of Negative Legacies On The Adjustment Of Parentally Bereaved Children And Adolescents, Phyllis R. Silverman, John Baker, Cheryl-Anne Cait, Kathrin Boerner

Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications

This is a report of a qualitative analysis of a sample of bereaved families in which one parent died and in which children scored in the clinical range on the Child Behavior Check List. The purpose of this analysis was to learn more about the lives of these children. They were considered to be at risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems associated with the death. We discovered that many of these “high risk” children had a continuing bond with the deceased that was primarily negative and troubling for them in contrast to a comparison group of children not at …

Children's Sociable And Aggressive Behaviour With Peers: A Comparison Of The Us And Australia, And Contributions Of Temperament And Parenting Styles, Alan Russell, Craig H. Hart, Clyde C. Robinson, Susanne F. Olsen

Faculty Publications

Links between both temperament and parenting, and children's sociable and aggressive behaviour with peers (physical and relational), were examined. The research was undertaken in two Western cultures (the United States and Australia) assumed to be similar in socialisation practices and emphases. The moderating effects of parent sex and child sex were also examined. Parents completed questionnaires on parenting styles and child temperament. Preschool teachers rated children's aggressive and sociable behaviour. US children were rated higher on both types of aggression by teachers and on sociability, activity, and emotionality by parents. Girls were rated as more relationally aggressive and more prosocial …
