Learning To Teach Science Using A New Strategy: A Case Study Of A Primary Science Teacher, Nelofer Halai Aug 2003

Learning To Teach Science Using A New Strategy: A Case Study Of A Primary Science Teacher, Nelofer Halai

Book Chapters / Conference Papers

Constructivism has emerged as the dominant learning model in science educational reform. Despite this, there is a paucity of research studies on instructional strategies that might help the construction of knowledge that is in consonance with the established body of science. The use of activities based on discrepant events in teaching science at the primary level is seen as one way of encouraging this construction. Hence, Science Teachers enrolled in science methods courses / programmes at AKU-IED are exposed to this instructional strategy. The four-member team of science teacher educators, teaching on an eight-week in-service programme, chose to look at …

Faculty Use Of Student Evaluation Feedback, Yuankun Yoo, Ellen Weissinger, Marilyn L. Grady

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

This study examined faculty formative use of end of semester student rating of instruction (SRI) feedback. Over 600 faculty from three universities responded to a mailed survey. The majority of faculty reported using SRI feedback on a regular basis. Formative use of the SRI feedback was found to relate to faculty perceptions and values. The use of negative practices was reported by a small percentage of respondents. The results provide support to revised version of Geis's (1991) SRI feedback model.

The Effects Of Alcohol And A Woman's Refusal On Men's Ability To Discriminate Inappropriate Sexual Behavior In A Date Rape Scenario., Andrea H. Winslett Aug 2003

The Effects Of Alcohol And A Woman's Refusal On Men's Ability To Discriminate Inappropriate Sexual Behavior In A Date Rape Scenario., Andrea H. Winslett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Misperception of sexual cues and alcohol consumption have been demonstrated to be risk factors for date rape. According to alcohol myopia theory (Steele & Josephs, 1990), when a person consumes alcohol, the resulting cognitive impairment causes the person to become “myopic”, attending only to cues that are most salient. This occurs when there is a conflict between inhibitory and disinhibitory cues, such as in a date rape situation. Therefore, when disinhibitory cues to sexual contact are most salient, the drinker would focus attention toward these cues, resulting in excessive behavior, such as inappropriate sexual behavior. There has been some support …

Identifying Behavioral Risk Factors For Acquaintance Rape In College Females, Sherrie Maher Aug 2003

Identifying Behavioral Risk Factors For Acquaintance Rape In College Females, Sherrie Maher

Dissertations

In the current study, a videotaped scenario was used to assess sexual communication skills among a sample of undergraduate women. The study was designed to identify specific communication strategies that may serve as risk or protective factors in acquaintance rape situations. Given that women with a prior sexual victimization history are at increased risk for subsequent sexual assault, the study examined whether these women exhibit particular communication skills deficits in dating situations. Using a validated videotaped vignette, 47 undergraduate women without a history of victimization (NVP) were compared to 28 women with a history of sexual assault (SVP) (assault occurring …

The Rise And Fall Of Programmed Instruction: Informing Instructional Technologists Through A Study Of The Past, Jason K. Mcdonald Aug 2003

The Rise And Fall Of Programmed Instruction: Informing Instructional Technologists Through A Study Of The Past, Jason K. Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

Instructional technologists have recently been called upon to examine the assumptions they hold about teaching and learning, and to consider how those assumptions can affect their practice of the discipline. This thesis is an examination of how the assumptions instructional technologists hold can result in instructional materials that do not accomplish the original goals the developers set out to achieve. I explored this issue by examining the case study of programmed instruction, an educational movement from the mid-20th century that promised to revolutionize education but never lived up to its potential. Programmed instruction was heavily influenced by the assumptions of …

Opening Statement -- Making It Stick, Ronald L. Carlson, Michael S. Carlson Aug 2003

Opening Statement -- Making It Stick, Ronald L. Carlson, Michael S. Carlson

Popular Media

Every lawyer who sits down to plan her opening remarks for a coming trial has the same question: How far can I go in arguing my case during the opening statement? Can I mention the law? What about drawing a diagram of the accident on a blackboard? Will my opponent be able to stop me from displaying a couple of my dramatic exhibits to the jury?

Making one's theory of the case "stick" from the very start of the trial depends mightly on how far the lawyer can go in opening statement. Where the defense is primarily a legal or …

Cross-Cultural Meta-Analyses, Dianne A. Van Hemert Aug 2003

Cross-Cultural Meta-Analyses, Dianne A. Van Hemert

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

In the enormous collection of cross-cultural data that have been published during the last few decades it is difficult to perceive patterns. There is a clear need for systematizing the vast amount of cross-cultural studies and for developing models that explain cross-cultural differences in psychology. Two methods of cross-cultural meta-analysis can be distinguished. First, the instrument-based method of comparing data for one instrument across countries is suitable for instruments which have been administered in many countries. Second, a domain-based meta-analysis used a thematic domain from which culture-comparative studies are sampled instead of one specific instrument or method.

The Effect Of Alcohol On Women’S Detection Of Risk In A Date Rape Analogue, Marci Marroquin Loiselle Aug 2003

The Effect Of Alcohol On Women’S Detection Of Risk In A Date Rape Analogue, Marci Marroquin Loiselle

Dissertations

Research strongly suggests that alcohol is a risk factor for date rape for both victims and perpetrators (Abbey, 1991, Fritner & Rubinson, 1994; Miller & Marshall, 1987; Muehlenhard & Linton, 1987; Norris & Cubbins, 1992; Marx, Van Wie, & Gross, 1996). Many victims of sexual assault consume alcohol prior to being raped (Marx, et al., 1999), and "early recognition of when a social situation with a male acquaintance or intimate partner has become threatening can aida woman in preventing a serious incident of sexual aggression" (Norris, et al, 1999, p. 230). This study's purpose was to experimentally address the link …

Male And Female He Created Them: Ælfric’S Lives Of Saints And Patristic Theories Of Gender, Rhonda L. Mcdaniel Aug 2003

Male And Female He Created Them: Ælfric’S Lives Of Saints And Patristic Theories Of Gender, Rhonda L. Mcdaniel

Dissertations

My dissertation researches the writings of the four Latin Doctors, Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory the Great, in order to challenge the scholarly stereotype of misogyny and anxiety about women in the writings of these influential figures and, more importantly, to build the cultural foundation upon which to base an interpretation of Ælfric’s portrayals of male and female saints in the Lives of Saints.

Accordingly, in the first chapter I focus on the writings of the Latin Doctors concerning the practice of virginity and on their explications of the Trinity and the Creation and Fall of humankind. I then trace …

Court Delay And The Waiting Child, Jessica K. Heldman

San Diego Law Review

This Comment addresses the failure of our legal system when adopted children are forced to wait years before it is determined who will have legal custody of them. The author begins by exposing the problem and the devastating effects of these delays by providing evidence of delay in both private adoption and foster care placement cases. Then, the author explores the current legal framework within which courts make these life-altering child placement decisions. Next, the author confronts the question of why delay occurs, including several contributing factors, such as a lack of specific guidelines based on a child’s sense of …

The Determinants Of Policing Unfounding And Prosecutorial Case Rejections In San Diego, California Sexual Assault, Cases, Elizabeth M. Keller Aug 2003

The Determinants Of Policing Unfounding And Prosecutorial Case Rejections In San Diego, California Sexual Assault, Cases, Elizabeth M. Keller

Student Work

The vast amount of research that has been done on sexual assault in the past thirty years has yielded a great amount of knowledge about the phenomenon of sexual assault and the way the criminal justice system responds to it. One hypothesis that emerges from this literature is that certain cases of sexual assault may be treated differently by police and prosecutors because of characteristics of the victim, the suspect, or of the case itself. This study tests that hypothesis, using data collected by the San Diego Police Department’s Sex Crimes Unit over a multi-year period in the 1990s. This …

Technology And Time, Jon Vanwieren Aug 2003

Technology And Time, Jon Vanwieren

Masters Theses

This thesis sets out to further reveal the technology and time interrelationship in human society. It is through an investigation of an array of sociological, theoretical, philosophical, historical and artistic responses to modernity that this relationship is explored. Primary analytic focus is placed on two contemporary authors who have addressed the technology and time relationship. These authors are Manuel Castells and Paul Virilio. Castells and Virilio offer two distinct portraits of the modem-technological world. By contrasting these authors' projects, methods and intellectual heritage, the question of technology and time is further scrutinized. Advanced here is an argument that time is …

Navigating The Roadblocks To Spectral Color Reproduction: Data-Efficient Multi-Channel Imaging And Spectral Color Management, Mitchell Rosen Aug 2003

Navigating The Roadblocks To Spectral Color Reproduction: Data-Efficient Multi-Channel Imaging And Spectral Color Management, Mitchell Rosen

Theses

Commercialization of spectral imaging for color reproduction will require the identification and traversal of roadblocks to its success. Among the drawbacks associated with spectral reproduction is a tremendous increase in data capture bandwidth and processing throughput. Methods are proposed for attenuating these increases with data-efficient methods based on adaptive multi-channel visible-spectrum capture and with low-dimensional approaches to spectral color management. First, concepts of adaptive spectral capture are explored. Current spectral imaging approaches require tens of camera channels although previous research has shown that five to nine channels can be sufficient for scenes limited to pre-characterized spectra. New camera systems are …

Next-Of-Kin Perceptions Of Physician Responsiveness To Symptoms Of Hospitalized Patients Near Death, Joel C. Cantor, Jan Blustein, Matthew J. Carlson, David A. Gould

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many different medical providers visit critically ill patients during a hospitalization, and patients and family members may not feel any physician is truly in charge of care. This study explores whether perceiving that a physician was clearly in charge is associated with reports by surviving next of kin about the responsiveness of physicians to symptoms in hospitalized patients near the end of life. We conducted telephone interviews with surviving next of kin of adult patients (n = 1107) who died in one of five New York City teaching hospitals between April 1998 and June 1999 after a minimum 3-day inpatient …

Can You Just Say No? The Impact Of Critical Thinking On Advertisement Activated Alcohol Expectancies, Sarah A. Forbes Aug 2003

Can You Just Say No? The Impact Of Critical Thinking On Advertisement Activated Alcohol Expectancies, Sarah A. Forbes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol expectancies appear to be the crux of alcohol advertisement effectiveness. Research has supported the notion that alcohol expectancies predict future drinking, but the expectancies must be activated by cues before they can influence drinking. Alcohol ads are one possible cue. The extent to which ads activate these expectancies could predict the extent to which drinking is influenced. One way to test this idea was to vary participants' attention to alcohol ads, thus varying expectancy activation. This study also examined whether or not critical thinking could undo the influence of activated expectancies. Four conditions were created for the study: control, …

The Second Great Awakening spurred the moral reform campaign dealing with prostitution in the United States. In the nineteenth century as public areas were being segregated specifically for prostitution anti-vice reformers engaged in a discourse over the allocation of what historian Mary P. Ryan calls "public space." Beginning with the Progressive Era and the onset of the white slave trade, reformers shifted their attention from the regulation to the abolition of prostitution. Social hygiene and sex education became a part of the reform dialogue. Most major cities of this time eradicated the officially sanctioned Red Light District. However, the mid-western …
