Emotion Representation And Perception Across Cultures, Jeanette Altarriba, Dana M. Basnight, Tina M. Canary Aug 2003

Emotion Representation And Perception Across Cultures, Jeanette Altarriba, Dana M. Basnight, Tina M. Canary

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Are emotion words or emotion categories universal, or are particular emotions and emotion categories specific to certain cultures? The current review explores the answer to this question by summarizing the limited number of studies that have addressed this issue. The representation of emotion is discussed with regards to verbal and nonverbal (facial) processing, in turn. The evidence indicates that the answer is often conflicting and that issues such as methodological, linguistic, social and cultural variance have contributed to the often contradictory findings.

Three Essays On Stock Market Anomalies, Behavioral Finance, And Financial Econometrics, Ding Du Aug 2003

Three Essays On Stock Market Anomalies, Behavioral Finance, And Financial Econometrics, Ding Du

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation studies two important stock market anomalies, the correlation between stock returns and inflation and the predictability of stock returns. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 investigates why the stock return-inflation relation changes over time. Kaul (1987) considers changes in the monetary policy regime, while Hess and Lee (1999) propose changes in the composition of structural shocks. I show in Chapter 2: (1) different from Kaul (1987) and Hess and Lee (1999), both changes in the monetary policy regime and changes in the composition of structural shocks can in principle cause changes in the stock return-inflation relation; (2) …

Evaluation Of Techniques For Disseminating Parent -Child Interaction Therapy, Amy D. Herschell Aug 2003

Evaluation Of Techniques For Disseminating Parent -Child Interaction Therapy, Amy D. Herschell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Considerable advancements have been made in the last decade in developing, identifying, and evaluating empirically supported treatment programs (ESTs). Less progress has been made in the dissemination of these promising programs. This trend may be due, in part, to a lack of systematic studies investigating methods to distribute ESTs successfully so that both skills and knowledge are acquired. More information is needed regarding the effectiveness of existing treatment dissemination modalities (e.g., treatment manuals, workshops) as well as therapist characteristics that might impact training success.;The purposes of the current investigation were to: (a) evaluate a treatment manual as a method for …

Contextual Variability In Early Adolescents' State Masculinity, Femininity And Peer Interaction Goals, Jennifer Kristen Pickard Aug 2003

Contextual Variability In Early Adolescents' State Masculinity, Femininity And Peer Interaction Goals, Jennifer Kristen Pickard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of the study was to investigate how early adolescents' gender-typed behaviors (i.e., masculinity, femininity, goals for interacting with peers) changed as a function of the social context. Eighty early adolescents (40 boys and 40 girls, 7th--8th graders; Mean age = 13.14; SD = .65) worked with both a same- and an other-sex peer on a collaborative or a competitive block building task. Individual attributes such as participant sex, and contextual features such sex of partner affected early adolescents' reported masculinity, femininity, and their goals for a peer interaction. Boys reported greater femininity when interacting with an other-sex peer …

Effects Of Fear Of Dental Pain And Information Type On Fear And Pain Responding During Endodontic Treatment, John T. Sorrell Aug 2003

Effects Of Fear Of Dental Pain And Information Type On Fear And Pain Responding During Endodontic Treatment, John T. Sorrell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fear of pain is an important factor within dental settings. Information is an effective method of enhancing predictability about aversive events during dental and medical procedures and can decrease fear and pain during treatment. Therefore, the effects of fear of dental pain and information type on fear and pain responding during endodontic treatment were examined. Experiment 1 included 268 undergraduate students to develop an informational videotape and a knowledge inventory designed to enhance predictability about root canal treatment and measure dental knowledge across 3 domains (oral hygiene, root canal procedure, and pain during root canal treatment). Results suggest that videotape …

Non-Native Esl Teachers' Reactions To Students' Different Cultural Backgrounds In Classroom Interaction, Livia Silva Lirio Aug 2003

Non-Native Esl Teachers' Reactions To Students' Different Cultural Backgrounds In Classroom Interaction, Livia Silva Lirio

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There have been research studies done in the area of cross-cultural analysis that discuss the necessity of culture-oriented examiners or assessors as well as "culture-free testing" when assessing students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Despite evidence that "culture-bias" is present in oral examinations, few of the studies found directly approach the instructors' reactions to students' different cultural and backgrounds in classroom interaction. Therefore the purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate teachers' perspectives on teaching in a multicultural classroom. The findings of this study conducted in an American language institute with non-native ESL teachers reveal a mismatch between …

Alternative Forms Of Judicial Review, Mark Tushnet Aug 2003

Alternative Forms Of Judicial Review, Mark Tushnet

Michigan Law Review

The invention in the late twentieth century of what I call weak-form systems of judicial review provides us with the chance to see in a new light some traditional debates within U.S. constitutional law and theory, which are predicated on the fact that the United States has strong-form judicial review. Strong- and weak-form systems operate on the level of constitutional design, in the sense that their characteristics are specified in constitutional documents or in deep-rooted constitutional traditions. After sketching the differences between strong- and weak-form systems, I turn to design features that operate at the next lower level. Here legislatures …

The New Adult Education: Bringing Peer Educators Up To Speed, Nancy Grudens-Schuck, Julianne Cramer, Derrick Exner, Mark Shour

Journal of Extension

Stereotypes about peer educators (farmers teaching farmers, parent teaching parents) may get in Extension's way. Problems occur particularly when it is believed that peer educators' "natural" abilities are what make them great. This article provides an alternative view of peer educators, with a focus on ways to increase the educational skills of this important Extension partner. The article summarizes a new approach to adult education (constructivist and transformative) that was introduced to peer educators in Iowa (farmer cooperators and pesticide applicator educators) through workshops and support materials. The article also discusses challenges associated with adoption of new forms of adult …

An Assessment Of Residents' Willingness To Pay For Green Space And Farmland Preservation Conservation Easements Using The Contingent Valuation Method (Cvm), Thomas W. Blaine, Frank R. Lichtkoppler, Reed Stanbro Aug 2003

An Assessment Of Residents' Willingness To Pay For Green Space And Farmland Preservation Conservation Easements Using The Contingent Valuation Method (Cvm), Thomas W. Blaine, Frank R. Lichtkoppler, Reed Stanbro

Journal of Extension

In recent years, federal and state government agencies have required larger proportions of funding for environmental programs to be generated locally. Local officials want assessments of local public opinion in order to make funding decisions. Extension educators should take the opportunity to fill this important need. This article presents results of an Extension study of residents' attitudes toward programs to preserve natural areas and agricultural lands. The findings, obtained using the contingent valuation method (CVM), reveal that basic attitudes toward conservation, area of residence, and income are important predictors of residents' willingness to pay (WTP) for conservation easement programs.

Information Sources And Extension Delivery Methods Used By Private Longleaf Pine Landowners, Rama B. Radhakrishna, Larry Nelson, Robert Franklin, George Kessler Aug 2003

Information Sources And Extension Delivery Methods Used By Private Longleaf Pine Landowners, Rama B. Radhakrishna, Larry Nelson, Robert Franklin, George Kessler

Journal of Extension

Reaching forest landowners with useful information has become a challenging task for Extension educators. This task is even more complex when landowners have differing perceptions about the delivery method and usefulness of the information delivered. A study was conducted to determine the preferred educational delivery methods of forest landowners in South Carolina. We found that landowners do have preferences for educational delivery methods and believe educators should consider the preferred methods to maximize program efforts. Further, findings reinforce the need to modify delivery systems to fit the demographic profile of the intended audience and the changes occurring in technology.

Improving Urban Tree Care In The Great Plains: Impacts Of The Nebraska Tree Care Workshops, Peter Skelton, Scott J. Josiah

Journal of Extension

Urban and community forests possess many benefits that enhance our quality of life. The Nebraska Tree Care Workshop is a tree care training program designed to enhance tree management in urban settings. This article describes the impacts that the workshop has had on Nebraska's community tree resources. Data was collected using a survey of past participants. The study found that creating a large cadre of people, well trained in tree selection and care, has had a positive impact on community tree resources across the state.

Why They Come, Why They Go, And Why They Stay: Factors Affecting Volunteerism In 4-H Programs, David J. White, Mary E. Arnold Aug 2003

Why They Come, Why They Go, And Why They Stay: Factors Affecting Volunteerism In 4-H Programs, David J. White, Mary E. Arnold

Journal of Extension

The 4-H program depends on the work of thousands of adult volunteers. It seems prudent to understand more about the factors involved in an adult becoming a leader, factors contributing to the leader having a positive experience, and, in particular, the factors causing the leader to end his or her role. In order to better understand the experience of 4-H leaders and the factors contributing to their success, an exit survey was conducted with individuals who had terminated their leadership role. Key reasons for volunteering and leaving are identified.

Imprisoned And Empowered: The Women Of Edith Wharton's Supernatural Fiction., Tonya Faye Stansberry Aug 2003

Imprisoned And Empowered: The Women Of Edith Wharton's Supernatural Fiction., Tonya Faye Stansberry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By focusing on the status and state of women as represented in selected supernatural fiction by Edith Wharton, we explore the socio-gender relationships, as well as the gender roles of women in general as they existed in the early part of the twentieth century. These associations are discussed, as is the influence Henry James may have had on Wharton’s writing style within the genre of the ghostly tale.

The conclusions made within this study lead the reader of the tales to believe that Wharton expressed different feminist perspectives based on how she was developing as a person and as a …

Maintaining Effective Deterrence, Colin S. Gray Dr. Aug 2003

Maintaining Effective Deterrence, Colin S. Gray Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

While deterrence is as old as human conflict itself, it became particularly important with the advent of nuclear weapons when armed conflict between the superpowers had the potential to end civilization. Today there is a sense that terrorism has rendered deterrence obsolete and forced the United States to substitute preemption for it. The author illustrates that strategic reality is not simple. Instead, the two are inextricable. He provides both a conceptual framework for understanding deterrence or, more accurately, the psychology of deterrence and policy guidance on how the United States can most effectively use it. The author concludes that an …

It Competency And Firm Performance: Is Organizational Learning A Missing Link?, Michael J. Tippins, Ravipreet S. Sohi Aug 2003

It Competency And Firm Performance: Is Organizational Learning A Missing Link?, Michael J. Tippins, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Many companies have developed strategies that include investing heavily in information technology (IT) in order to enhance their performance. Yet, this investment pays off for some companies but not others. This study proposes that organization teaming plays a significant role in determining the outcomes of IT. Drawing from resource theory and IT literature, the authors develop the concept of IT competency. Using structural equations modeling with data collected from managers in 271 manufacturing firms, they show that organizational learning plays a significant role in mediating the effects of IT competency on firm performance.

Corporate And Individual Influences On Managers' Social Orientation, Joachim W. Marz, Thomas L. Powers, Thomas Queisser Aug 2003

Corporate And Individual Influences On Managers' Social Orientation, Joachim W. Marz, Thomas L. Powers, Thomas Queisser

WCBT Faculty Publications

This paper reports research on the influence of corporate and individual characteristics on managers' social orientation in Germany. The results indicate that mid-level managers expressed a significantly lower social orientation than low-level managers, and that job activity did not impact social orientation. Female respondents expressed a higher social orientation than male respondents. No impact of the political system origin (former East Germany versus former West Germany) on social orientation was shown. Overall, corporate position had a significantly higher impact on social orientation than did the characteristics of the individuals surveyed.
