Health Of Migrant Nicaraguans In The Monteverde Zone, August 3, 2003, Rebecca Cashman, Elizabeth Geier, Rocio Loria, Rachel Stewart, Joan Tucker, Cassandra Workman

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

Health conditions and health seeking behavior of migrant Nicaraguans in the Monteverde Zone. Nicaraguan migrants are exposed to unique conditions regarding labor, hygiene, physical stresses, and appropriate housing. These conditions vary depending on displacement and migrant status (i.e., temporary or permanent.) There is a significant presence of migrant Nicaraguans in the Monteverde Zone (ZMV), and while many of them share similar experiences, the realities of others are quite distinct. This study focused specifically on health conditions and health-seeking behavior, but other important data collected included information about migratory route, employment, and living conditions. The data allowed us to gain a …

The Effectiveness Of A Congestive Heart Failure Teaching Program To Community-Based Elders, Debbie Meggs Aug 2003

The Effectiveness Of A Congestive Heart Failure Teaching Program To Community-Based Elders, Debbie Meggs

MSN Research Projects

Heart failure affects more than 4.6 million people in the United States (Dahl & Penque, 2000). While mortality from myocardial infarction is on the decline, congestive heart failure numbers continue to rise. Statistics indicate that 550,000 cases occur each year, at an estimated cost of $21.4 billion a year (National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, 2002). Elders with congestive heart failure (CHF) do not always understand their disease nor do they recognize its symptoms. Recognition of CHF symptoms can lead to improved management and self-care. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide basic, low-literacy …

Influence Of Aluminum Ion On The Anaerobic Treatment Of A Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater, Julio Alberto Martinez Aug 2003

Influence Of Aluminum Ion On The Anaerobic Treatment Of A Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater, Julio Alberto Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of Al 3+ on the anaerobic treatment of a poultry slaughterhouse wastewater was studied in this work. The soluble COD (SCOD), volatile acid (VA) concentrations, and methane yield values were measured and compared for zero, 15, and 40 ppm Al 3+ runs. Methane yields of 55.4, 144.2, and 215.4 ml CH4/g. COD for zero, 15, and 40 ppm Al 3+ concentrations, respectively, were observed. Furthermore, SCOD and VAs were not detectable in the reactor that was seeded with 40 ppm Al 3+. It was concluded that inhibitory effects of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) on aceticlastic methanogens were …

Feed test results can be used to: (1) balance rations, (2) improve future crop management if present forage is of unsatisfactory quality, and (3) determine equitable prices for feedstuffs based on nutritive value. Results of analysis are expressed on an “as-received” and on a “100% dry matter (DM)” basis. As-received is sometimes also referred to “as-fed” or “fresh.” It includes the water or moisture in the feed. Nutrients expressed on this basis represent the nutrient content of the feed when it was received at the lab.

Marketing Health Promotion For People With Disabilities, Craig Ravesloot Ph.D., University Of Montana Rural Institute

Health and Wellness

Healthy People 2010 is the blueprint for improving the health and well being of all Americans. Its overall focus is to decrease health risks and to increase the proportion of people engaging in healthy behaviors. For the first time, Healthy People includes a chapter on the health of people with disabilities. Chapter Six specifically addresses secondary conditions as a public health concern. Secondary conditions are medical and psycho-social conditions people often experience following the onset of disabilities or chronic illnesses. Our research suggests people with disabilities annually experience 14 secondary conditions that limit their health and independence.

Pluhar's Perfectionism: A Critique Of Her (Un)Egalitarian Ethic, Chris Crittenden Aug 2003

Pluhar's Perfectionism: A Critique Of Her (Un)Egalitarian Ethic, Chris Crittenden

Between the Species

I intend to criticize Evelyn Pluhar’s allegedly egalitarian ethic, presented in her recent work Beyond Prejudice, partly by way of contrasting it with what she calls “perfectionism” and partly by demonstrating that, in fact, her ethic schizophrenically embraces a defective form of perfectionism. My analysis suggests that knotty animal-rights dilemmas are best approached not from a stance of viewing animals and humans as morally equal but rather from a framework more flexible and adaptive to the complexity of real-life scenarios. Such adaptability in a theory need not condone cruelty, and it avoids the unintuitive and absurdly demanding features of a …

All The News That’S Fat To Print: The American "Obesity Epidemic" And The Media, Natalie Boero Aug 2003

All The News That’S Fat To Print: The American "Obesity Epidemic" And The Media, Natalie Boero

Faculty Publications, Sociology

Increasingly the term epidemic is being used to describe the current prevalence of fatness in the United States. Skyrocketing rates of obesity among all groups of Americans, particularly children, the poor, and minorities, have become a major public health concern. Indeed, it is difficult to open a newspaper or magazine without encountering a discussion of the expanding American waistline and the health problems associated therewith. In this paper I use 751 New York Times articles on obesity to examine the media construction of the obesity epidemic. I show that there is not one dominant discourse (i.e. medicine) constructing this epidemic, …

Stories Of Mothers And Child Welfare (Full Report), Gary Cameron, S. Hoy Aug 2003

Stories Of Mothers And Child Welfare (Full Report), Gary Cameron, S. Hoy

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

The voices we hear describing the lives of mothers who come into contact with child welfare agencies are usually those of service providers and researchers. How do mothers make sense of their own lives and what happened to their families when they became involved with child welfare? This report provides an opportunity to listen to what 16 of these mothers had to say over conversations averaging 5 - 6 hours with each woman. Aspects of these stories will be familiar to some readers. Nonetheless, these stories challenge both popular and professional perceptions of who these mothers are and how they …

Knowledge Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors And Perception Of Risk In Women, Kimberly Kuykendall-Marlar Aug 2003

Knowledge Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors And Perception Of Risk In Women, Kimberly Kuykendall-Marlar

MSN Research Projects

More women than men are dying of cardiovascular disease. The misconception persists that heart disease is a "man's disease" and not an urgent health care issue for women. In the United States, heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. In 1997, 228,679 women died due to cardiovascular disease, and 41,443 women died from breast cancer. Yet, women are still not assessed effectively for their risk factors for cardiovascular disease; therefore, women are under-diagnosed and under-treated for this disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate women's knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors, assess their perception of risk, …

Alternative Feeds For Horses, Koyla Kruse Aug 2003

Alternative Feeds For Horses, Koyla Kruse

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Feeding a horse is probably the largest cost of horse ownership. The nutrition the horse needs and the availability (therefore, price) of the feed must be carefully balanced. Many options are available. Traditional feeds for horses typically are grass or alfalfa hay, corn, oats, and/or a molasses-based sweet feed of some type. Some years, good quality forage may be too expensive or unavailable. In other cases, you may want to cut costs or better utilize more readily available feeds. Following is a guide to the safety and efficacy of feeds not traditionally fed to horses.

Word Ways

Supervocalies are words or phrases with AEIOU once each, and no Ys. This is the first of a 3-part series examining complete sets of supervocalic people, places and things. The goal was to find known human beings - reasonably famous supervocalic people - for each of the 120 ordering of AEIOU. After copious amounts of Google searching, the feat has been accomplished.

Prevalence Of Overweight In Preschool Children And The Association With Dietary And Lifestyle Factors, Anthony H. Ng

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For the past several decades, there has been a steady increase in obesity in the United States. National surveys indicate that 64% of American adults are overweight or obese and more than 1 0% of preschool children are overweight. This study determined the prevalence of overweight in a group of preschool children aged between three and five years at a Head Start Center and evaluated the relationship of specific lifestyle factors between caregivers and their children and the relationship of these patterns to the development of overweight. The caregivers were asked to complete a questionnaire, which assessed specific dietary and …

Validation Of A 3-Day Physical Activity Recall Instrument In Female Youth, Russell R. Pate, Rebecca Ross, Marsha Dowda, Stewart G. Trost, John R. Sirard

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the 3-Day Physical Activity Recall (3DPAR) self-report instrument in a sample of eighth and ninth grade girls (n= 70, 54.3% white, 37.1% African American). Criterion measures of physical activity were derived using the CSA 7164 accelerometer. Participants wore a CSA monitor for 7 consecutive days and completed the self-report physical activity recall for the last 3 of those days. Self-reported total METs, 30-min blocks of MVPA, and 30-min blocks of VPA were all significantly correlated with analogous CSA variables for 7 days (r=0.35-0.51; P<0.01) and 3 days (r …
