Analysis Of Soil Lead Levels In An Historic District Of A South Central Kentucky City, Robert Cummins
Analysis Of Soil Lead Levels In An Historic District Of A South Central Kentucky City, Robert Cummins
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Lead in soil has been shown to be a significant pathway of lead exposure in children. Several factors including age of housing units, exterior composition, and paint loading may affect the amount of lead present in the soil. The purpose of this study was to analyze soil lead levels on properties located in an historic district and relate those levels to the variables previously mentioned. A total of 30 soil samples were collected from housing units in a nationally recognized historic district. Concentrations of lead in the soil were analyzed using a NITON X-ray Fluorescence Spectrum Analyzer, following EPA Method …
Fish As Pollutants: Limitations Of And Crosscurrents In Law, Science, Management, And Policy, Jeremy Firestone, Robert Barber
Fish As Pollutants: Limitations Of And Crosscurrents In Law, Science, Management, And Policy, Jeremy Firestone, Robert Barber
Washington Law Review
When we think of pollutants, we either consciously or unconsciously draw a bright line between pollutants and what might be called "natural." That which is natural cannot be a pollutant; that which is a pollutant cannot be natural. It seems odd to speak of live fish as pollutants, as odd as it would be to speak of dioxins as natural. Nevertheless, the traditional definition of fish as natural may be fading as our awareness of the adverse environmental effects of accidental or poorly planned fish introductions increases. Along these lines, a federal court recently found that non-native Atlantic salmon that …

Concentrated Hog Feeding Operations And The Animal Rights Movement: A Website Diagnostic Frame Analysis, Venita M. Quamme
Concentrated Hog Feeding Operations And The Animal Rights Movement: A Website Diagnostic Frame Analysis, Venita M. Quamme
Theses and Dissertations
The volume of online texts designating hog concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) as problematic serves to illustrate an emerging social problem. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate how five online animal advocate organizations present hog CAFOs as problematic, and warranting intervention. The units of study include: The Animal Welfare Institute, Farm Sanctuary, Humane Farming Association, Humane Society of the United States, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Together, they represent an integral part of the animal rights movement, a descriptive label that does not imply consensus regarding animal “rights.”

Late Embryonic And Fetal Mortality In The Ewe, Alison Brown Dixon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Timing and factors associated with late embryonic and fetal loss in the ewe were examined with ultrasonography. In study one, pregnancy diagnosis and counts of embryos were conducted on days 25, 45, 65, and/or 85 of gestation and compared to lambs born at term. Preliminary results indicated that more potential offspring were lost during fetal development than during late embryonic development. Approximately 18% of ewes experienced late embryonic and fetal loss and 20% of embryos or fetuses were lost from day 25 to term. Losses of potential offspring were continuous throughout gestation and approximately 3% of embryos present on day …

Field Observations Of Intraspecific Agonistic Behavior Of Two Crayfish Species, Orconectes Rusticus And Orconectes Virilis, In Different Habitats, Daniel A. Bergman, Paul A. Moore
Peer Reviewed Articles
Agonistic behavior is a fundamental aspect of ecological theories on resource acquisition and sexual selection.
Crustaceans are exemplary models for agonistic behavior within the laboratory, but agonistic behavior in natural habitats is often neglected. Laboratory studies do not achieve the same ecological realism as field studies. In an attempt to connect laboratory results to field data and investigate how habitat structure affects agonistic interactions, the nocturnal behavior of two crayfish species was observed by scuba diving and snorkeling in two northern Michigan lakes. Intraspecific agonistic interactions were analyzed in three habitats: two food resources—macrophytes and detritus—and one sheltered habitat. The …

"Placing" Health Risks In The Karakoram: Local Perceptions Of Disease, Dependency, And Social Change In Northern Pakistan, Sarah Halvorson
Geography Faculty Publications
This article examines local perceptions of health risks in a mountain community in the Karakoram of Northern Pakistan. Specifically, it aims to show how the tremendous social and economic transformations taking place in this region are experienced and understood by the people most affected by them. The case study draws from ethnographic data collected through a range of methods, including personal narratives, focus groups, interviews, household surveys, conversations, and participant observations. Central to this analysis is the role that social change plays in mediating and shaping residents’ worries, and perceived vulnerabilities within this particular economic and cultural context. Furthermore, the …
Intergenerational Programming In Extension: Needs Assessment As Planning Tool, Matthew Kaplan, Shih-Tsen Liu, Rama Radhakrishna
Intergenerational Programming In Extension: Needs Assessment As Planning Tool, Matthew Kaplan, Shih-Tsen Liu, Rama Radhakrishna
Journal of Extension
This article presents the findings of a needs assessment study conducted to plan and develop a statewide intergenerational program. Twenty-eight Extension personnel, primarily Extension educators in the Family and Consumer Science and 4-H/Youth Development program areas, noted their preferences regarding program content and delivery format. Results were subsequently used in making several key decisions about curricular directions and program delivery strategies. To further explore ways in which intergenerational programming strategies can be developed to enhance Extension programming, it is proposed that additional research be conducted with a broader base of Extension personnel.

B.R. Wells Rice Research Studies 2002, R. J. Norman, J.-F. Meullenet
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Arkansas is the leading rice producing state in the U .S .. representing almost 46% of the total U .S. production and almost 47% of the total acres planted to rice . Rice cultural practices vary across the state and across the U.S. However, due to changing political, environmental, and economic times, the practices arc dynamic. This survey was initiated in 2002 to monitor how the changing times reflect the changes in the way Arkansas rice producers approach their livelihood. The survey was conducted by polling county Extension agents in each of the counties in Arkansas that produce rice. Questions …

Prey Nutritional Quality Interacts With Chemical Defenses To Affect Consumer Feeding And Fitness, Edwin Cruz-Rivera, Mark E. Hay
Prey Nutritional Quality Interacts With Chemical Defenses To Affect Consumer Feeding And Fitness, Edwin Cruz-Rivera, Mark E. Hay
Faculty Publications
Numerous studies have assessed the individual effects of prey nutritional quality or chemical defenses on consumer feeding behavior. However, little is known about how these traits interact to affect consumer feeding and performance. We tested the separate and interactive effects of prey chemical defenses and nutritional quality on the feeding behavior and fitness of six sympatric crustacean mesograzers. Natural concentrations of diterpene alcohols (dictyols) from the brown alga Dictyota menstrualis were incorporated, or not incorporated, into lower quality and higher quality foods to create artificial diets mimicking prey of variable value and defense. Five amphipods (Ampithoe longimana, A. valida, Cymadusa …

Barriers To Participation In Extension Expanded Foods And Nutrition Programs, John G. Richardson, Jo Ann Y. Williams, R David Mustian
Journal of Extension
Barriers to participation in Extension programs often influence the means of program delivery and approaches to developing educational programs. A study of Expanded Foods and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) clientele in one of North Carolina's poorer rural counties accentuates the difficulties faced by these limited resource clientele in their participation in the EFNEP program, as well as challenges to Extension to recognize and overcome such barriers. The research found that essentially all of this limited resource audience expressed some level of barriers. These included logistical, social, situational, and emotional barriers.

Distance Education Of Pennsylvania Pond Owners, Katherine L. Schmidt, Bryan R. Swistock, William E. Sharpe
Journal of Extension
Pennsylvania pond owners represent a large audience with a great need for educational programming and assistance. Penn State Extension attempted to reach this audience via a pond management program delivered by satellite. Evaluations by both program attendees and Extension professionals demonstrated that the program was successful. However, attendee respondents indicated that they wanted more in-depth information over a shorter time frame. A relatively small proportion (10%) of attendees did not favor satellite delivery. This level of dissatisfaction is quite low and may be improved by focusing on shorter, more focused satellite programs and by providing videotapes of satellite programs.

Volunteerism, Community Service, And Service-Learning By Ohio 4-Hers In Grades 4-12, R Dale Safrit, Allen W. Auck
Journal of Extension
This study reported here investigated volunteer service by Ohio 4-H'ers ages 10 to 19. The study's population was randomly sampled by each age category: 66,345 4-H community club members ages 10-14 and 18,233 ages 15-19. Study findings suggest that nearly 100% of 4-H'ers in both age categories are involved in community service. Respondents spent an equal amount of time volunteering through school, out of school, on their own, or through 4-H youth development experiences. The researchers conclude that 4-H youth development has an impact on 4-H'ers performing service but that it is not the only way members are helping others.

Hooks And Anchors In Youth Development Program Delivery, Kathy Wolfe, Jan B. Carroll
Journal of Extension
Hooks and anchors remind Cooperative Extension educators to engage participants so they will attend programming and learn. The hook brings them in and sets the stage for learning. The anchor is the weight or content of the presentation. Examples refer to Cooperative Extension professionals, volunteers, and youth. Experiential learning is a hook, and life skills are anchors for youth.

An Individual-Based Model Of Canid Populations: Modelling Territoriality And Social Structure, William C. Pitt, Paul W. Box, Frederick F. Knowlton
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The management of canid populations has been at the forefront of wildlife management worldwide for much of the last century. Effective management depends on the ability to integrate species biology, the environmental aspects upon which those populations depend, and the factors controlling species abundance. Further, managing canid populations requires consideration of territoriality and dominance, which may have a significant effect on population dynamics. To better understand the effect of social structure on canid populations, we developed an individual-based computer model using Swarm to mimic natural coyote population dynamics. We selected the Swarm simulation environment because it is ideally suited for …

Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate Levels In Women. Relationships With Body Mass Index, Insulin And Glucose Levels, Rowydan N. Al-Harithy
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and DHEA-sulfate (DHEA-S) are the most abundant steroids in human plasma. Previous studies have shown that administration of DHEA-S is more effective than DHEA in reducing adipose tissue mass and cellularity in rats. Another study suggested that maintaining high levels of DHEA-S might prevent the development of obesity. Therefore, this study aims to determine the relationship of plasma dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels with respect to obesity, fasting insulin and glucose levels in a cohort of obese and normal weight healthy Saudi women. METHODS: This study was carried out at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi …

Design And Analysis Of Meal Assembly And Delivery Methods In Hospital Foodservice Systems, Emily Olney
Theses
Foodservice systems are a necessary and integral part of virtually every hospital. Although hospital foodservice is not the primary function hospitals perform, the foodservice system is a significant part of a hospital's operating budget and floor space, and as a result, should be operated in an optimal way. The main objective of this thesis is to determine the best foodservice system for alternative hospital configurations focusing on the tray assembly and ordering/delivery methods used in providing meals to patients. Four main factors are evaluated at two different levels for each factor using a full factorial experiment. These four factors are …

Mathematics Instructional Methods And Their Effects On Student Mathematics Scores, Ruth Huovinen
Theses and Dissertations
Mathematics instruction is undergoing an evolution in the United States. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) advocates a change from the previous emphasis on computational skills to a greater emphasis on problem solving. The pre-service training most teachers completed did not include extensive exposure to strategies of this type. For that reason, school districts may choose to utilize staff development programs to assist teachers in acquiring these new strategies. This study examined one such staff development program, Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI), and its effects on the mathematics achievement scores of the fourth grade students in a school district. …
