Reproductive Decisions By Black Brant: Mechanisms To Synchronize Hatch And Spatial Variation In Growth Rates Of Goslings, Christopher Andrew Nicolai Aug 2003

Reproductive Decisions By Black Brant: Mechanisms To Synchronize Hatch And Spatial Variation In Growth Rates Of Goslings, Christopher Andrew Nicolai

Biological Sciences

I investigated two aspects of reproductive decisions in Black Brant: synchronous hatch within clutches and areas in which to rear their broods. It has been hypothesized that Anatidae facilitate a synchronous hatch through vocalizations among embryos within the same clutch. I performed manipulative experiments in which variation was controlled for both genetic and incubation pattern sources in incubation period length. Our results suggest that vocalizations are not responsible for a synchronous hatch, and I suggest that inherent properties of the eggs themselves are responsible for a synchronous hatch. Additionally, I compared gosling growth rates from areas of low nest densities …

Seasonal Distribution Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus) In Relation To High-Quality Ephemeral Prey Species In Southeastern Alaska, Jamie Neil Womble Aug 2003

Seasonal Distribution Of Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus) In Relation To High-Quality Ephemeral Prey Species In Southeastern Alaska, Jamie Neil Womble

Fisheries

Energetic demands are high for sea lions during spring when females are pregnant and lactating and males are preparing for extended fasting during the breeding season. Therefore, I predicted that the distribution of sea lions in spring would be influenced by the distribution of spring-spawning aggregations of high-energy Pacific herring (Clupeapallasii) and eulachon (Thaleichthys pacificus) in southeastern Alaska. Monthly aerial surveys at 23 Steller sea lions haul outs revealed that haulout use was seasonally dynamic. Some sea lion haulouts were only occupied during spring. Other haulouts exhibited pronounced increases in the number of sea lions during certain seasons. Sea lion …

Hot Issues And Cool Rules, Bradley Lubben Aug 2003

Hot Issues And Cool Rules, Bradley Lubben

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

When President Bush signed the Farm Bill on May 13, 2002, much of the focus was on the new commodity and conservation programs and how they had changed relative to the 1996 Farm Bill. However, near the end of the Farm Bill was some language that has become one of the most contentious issues today.

Title X, Section 10816 of the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (2002 Farm Bill) addressed country-of-origin labeling (COOL) rules for beef, lamb, pork, fish, fruits, vegetables, and peanuts. The legislation called for voluntary guidelines to be implemented no later than September 30, …

Wic Reauthorization: Opportunities For Improving The Nutritional Status Of Women, Infants, And Children, Harriette Fox, Margaret Mcmanus, Harry Schmidt

National Health Policy Forum

This paper examines the main reform issues affecting the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), which is coming up for reauthorization this year. The paper provides background information on the WIC program, including its dramatic growth in participation and funding. It also reviews WIC’s link to health care and its impact on health outcomes. A series of considerations for WIC’s future are raised, including food package and program eligibility changes, nutrition education strategies to reduce obesity, financial risks and health consequences of relying on infant formula rebates, and new opportunities for research and demonstration.

Toward A Criminal Law For Cyberspace: Distributed Security, Susan Brenner Aug 2003

Toward A Criminal Law For Cyberspace: Distributed Security, Susan Brenner

ExpressO

The article analyzes the structure and evolution of the current, traditional model of law enforcement and explains why this model is not an effective means of addressing computer-facilitated criminal activity. It begins by analyzing the operation of rules in collective systems composed of biological or artificial entities; it explains that every such system utilizes basic, constitutive rules to maintain both internal and external order. The article explains that intelligence has a profound effect upon a system’s ability to maintain internal order. Intelligence creates the capacity for deviant behavior, i.e., the refusal to abide by constitutive rules, and this requires the …

Dispersal Of Sagebrush-Steppe Seeds By The Western Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis), John F. Mull Aug 2003

Dispersal Of Sagebrush-Steppe Seeds By The Western Harvester Ant (Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis), John F. Mull

Western North American Naturalist

Like many seed-harvesting ants, the western harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis) can act as both a predator and a seed disperser. Dispersal results when seeds are dropped en route to the nest, are left in nest granaries when colonies die or are abandoned, or are removed from granaries and discarded in nest middens. This study examined the density and species identity of seeds discarded in harvester ant nest middens and compared them with those found in nearby soils. Nineteen species of seeds were recovered from middens, compared with 13 species in 5-m reference areas and 9 species in adjacent …

West Nile Virus: Emerging Threat To Public Health And Animal Health, Robert G. Mclean Aug 2003

West Nile Virus: Emerging Threat To Public Health And Animal Health, Robert G. Mclean

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

West Nile virus (WNV) is in the genus Flavivirus, family Flavioiridae, and is closely related to other members of this genus: Japanese encephalitis virus in Southeast Asia, Murray Valley encephalitis virus in Australia, and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus in North and South America. The principal vertebrate hosts for these arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are wild birds, and the primary vectors are mosquitoes. Little clinical disease or mortality has been reported previously in wild birds from natural infection with these viruses, although significant morbidity and mortality has occurred in humans and domestic animals. West Nile virus (WNV) previously occurred …

International Poverty Law: A Response To Economic Globalization, Timothy K. Kuhner Aug 2003

International Poverty Law: A Response To Economic Globalization, Timothy K. Kuhner

ExpressO

This paper is directed at poverty lawyers and, more generally, anyone with an interest in the relationship between poverty and globalization. In this paper, I argue that poverty law needs to expand its scope in order to encompass the international dimensions of poverty, and to thereby become responsive to the current nature of poverty. This need is evident, because wealth and poverty have been globalized, domestic issues have become international issues, and international issues have become domestic issues and produced domestic changes. After establishing these premises, I describe five areas of research and advocacy, each of which is located within …
